What Is the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028?
It is a one-year leadership fellowship for senior global health professionals, with a six-week stay at Harvard in the middle of it. Harvard's full title is the Harvard Learn, Engage, Advance, Disrupt (LEAD) Fellowship for Promoting Women in Global Health. Fellows come from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and are expected to go home afterward.
This is not a degree and it is not a research placement. Harvard describes a customized program in which each fellow builds a curriculum around personal goals, with coaching, faculty mentors, an executive education course and private masterclasses. The Harvard Global Health Institute presents it as a funded alternative to a traditional training program, built around mentorship and coaching.
Who Runs the Fellowship
Two Harvard units share it. The Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) hosts the program, and the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health collaborates on it. The two institutions behind this fellowship are:

What Is the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028 Deadline?
The deadline is 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, November 15, 2026. Harvard states this on both its fellowship page and its announcement post. It does not describe a rolling or early-decision process, so there is one date for all applicants, and no extension is announced.
Plan your own calendar backward from the deadline. The tool on our Application Deadline Tracker page keeps every date in one place, which helps when you are applying to several programs at once.
Deadline in Your Time Zone
Harvard uses Eastern Standard Time. Daylight saving ended on November 1, 2026, so EST is UTC-5 on deadline day. For most readers outside the Americas, the deadline falls on the morning of Monday, November 16, and that extra day is a trap if you count wrongly.

The November 8 and November 16 Date Conflict
Harvard's own announcement post contradicts itself. Its search description says applications are due November 8, 2026, but the body of the same post and the main fellowship page both say November 15. We treat November 15 as the controlling date because it appears on the program page and in the post's body text.
Some third-party listings also show November 16, which looks like a time zone shift from the same deadline. Don't rely on any of them. A sensible plan is to finish by November 8 anyway, which costs you nothing and covers the one page that disagrees.
Eligible Nationalities: Who Can Apply?
Harvard does not restrict applicants by passport. What it restricts is where you are based: candidates should currently live and work in a low- or middle-income country and plan to return there. Harvard also says it welcomes applicants from all continents, regions, disciplines, sectors, and gender identities.
Official wording: "Candidates nominate themselves by applying for the fellowship."
Harvard publishes no country list and doesn't say which income classification it uses. The World Bank income groups are the usual reference, but if your country sits near a boundary, email the fellowship office at HGHI_Fellowships@harvard.edu before you invest weeks in the application.
International Applicant Guidance
If you work in global health in a low- or middle-income country, you are the intended applicant, whatever your nationality. The 26 fellows so far come from 21 countries, and by our count of the official list, India has the most (three). Colombia, Georgia, Haiti, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru and Thailand each appear once among them.
One edge case is unresolved. Harvard doesn't say what happens if you hold an LMIC passport but work in a high-income country. That scenario is not officially confirmed, so ask the program office in writing and keep the answer.
For U.S. Applicants
This fellowship is not designed for U.S.-based professionals. Harvard asks that candidates currently work in a low- or middle-income country and return there, and the program is built around obtaining a J-1 visa for travel to the United States. If you live and work in the United States, look at other leadership programs instead, such as the Ibrahim Leadership Fellowship guide on our site, and check each one's own residency rules.
For Pakistani Applicants
If you are based in Pakistan and work full-time in global health, the base-country rule works in your favor, because the World Bank classifies Pakistan as a lower-middle-income country. Harvard's list of past fellows includes one fellow from Pakistan in the 2019 cohort, so the route is not theoretical.
Three Pakistan-specific points matter. First, Harvard's published application list does not include transcripts, IELTS or TOEFL scores, or HEC-attested degrees, so don't spend money on attestation unless the online form asks for it. Second, your employer must commit in writing to a six-week leave in April 2028, so if you work for a government department or a public university, ask early how long leave sanction takes. That second point is practical advice, not an official rule. Third, the deadline falls at 9:59 AM PKT on Monday, November 16.
Eligibility Criteria, Checked One by One
You need a master's degree, 10 or more years of full-time global health work, substantial leadership experience, your employer's backing, and eligibility for a J-1 visa. You also need to be free for six weeks in April 2028. Each rule below comes straight from Harvard's pages.
- Education: a master's degree in a relevant field is the minimum.
- Experience: full-time work in global health with at least 10 years of professional experience. Work done as a university student does not count.
- Leadership: substantial leadership experience, plus evidence of further potential.
- Employer support: the full backing of your employer and a champion in your organization who serves as a reference.
- Leave: a leave of absence, or equivalent, for the six weeks in residence in April 2028.
- Visa: you must be able to obtain a J-1 visa and stay in the Boston area for the residency.
- No recent long fellowship: no full-time fellowship of four months or longer in the two years before the program.
- Base: currently based in an LMIC, with a plan to return there.
Eligibility Decision Table
Use this table to decide quickly whether you should apply, hold off, or ask a question first.
Eligibility decision table for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028
| Your situation | Where you stand | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Master's degree and 10+ years in global health, based in an LMIC | Fits the stated profile | Start the application now |
| Master's degree and 7 years of experience, plus 3 years as a student assistant | Does not meet the 10-year rule because student work is excluded | Wait for a later cycle |
| Finished a full-time 6-month fellowship 14 months before the program | Falls inside the two-year, four-month limit | Ask the office, or apply later |
| Strong profile, but your employer will not release you in April 2028 | Fails the leave and institutional commitment rules | Settle leave first, then apply |
| LMIC citizen working in a high-income country | Not officially confirmed | Email HGHI_Fellowships@harvard.edu |
| Based and working in the United States | Outside the stated base rule | Look at other programs |
The title says "Promoting Women in Global Health," yet Harvard's eligibility text welcomes all genders and gender identities and states no women-only rule. The fellowship's stated aim is to equip leaders who will mentor future female leaders, and one of the four essays asks for your mentoring plan. If you are not a woman, read that essay prompt carefully and ask the office a direct question before you decide.
Available Fields and Degree Level
There is no degree level and no fixed subject list, because the fellowship is a leadership program rather than a course. Harvard welcomes applicants from all disciplines and sectors, and it says past fellows span research, advocacy, administration, policy, and clinical work.
Areas of expertise among past Harvard LEAD fellows
| Theme | Examples listed on Harvard's page |
|---|---|
| Infectious disease | HIV, tuberculosis, outbreak response, TB/HIV |
| Health systems and financing | Health financing, universal health coverage, pharmaceutical policy |
| Maternal and reproductive health | Maternal and child health, midwifery, sexual and reproductive rights |
| Digital and clinical innovation | Digital health, AI in health, simulation-based education |
| Equity, mental health and policy | Gender equity, mental health, health rights, bioethics |
What Does the Fellowship Cover?
Harvard states that visa fees, housing and flights are covered and that a living stipend is provided for the weeks in the United States. The fellowship page adds that fellows receive a stipend for logistical costs, including housing, flights, course fees and a daily allowance for food and transport.
Out-of-Pocket Cost Reality
Harvard publishes no total value, so any dollar figure you see elsewhere is an estimate. What we can say is what you won't pay and what the pages leave open. You are not billed for the virtual months, and fall engagement is described as light. The open items are the stipend amount, your salary during the April leave, and the cost of assembling documents.
One wording difference deserves a question to the office. The announcement says visa fees, housing, and flights are covered, while the program page describes a stipend meant to pay for housing and flights. Ask whether Harvard pays them directly or reimburses you, because that changes how much cash you need to hold in April 2028.
What Fellows Do During the Year
The year has two parts: a light virtual phase starting in the fall of 2027 and a six-week residency in April 2028. During the virtual months, fellows plan a personal leadership path with an executive coach and handle academic credentialing, the J-1 visa, and registration for spring courses.
- Executive coaching: one-to-one sessions that include a TypeCoach style assessment and a 360-degree Leadership Versatility Index review.
- Faculty mentoring: each fellow meets Harvard faculty with aligned interests, and Harvard encourages monthly meetings.
- Executive education course: in the past, fellows took the Women and Power course at Harvard Kennedy School.
- Private masterclasses: past topics include negotiation, crisis management, conflict resolution and persuasive writing.
- Speaking opportunities: fellows speak at global health events during and after the fellowship.
Work Hours, Leave and Payment
You keep your job for most of the year and leave it only for the six-week residency in April 2028. Harvard puts it plainly, and this is the line to show your employer.
Official wording: "Fellows are not expected to be removed from work responsibilities during the fall semester".
Harvard continues that engagement then is light.
Source: Harvard LEAD Fellowship page
Payment details are thin. Harvard says the residency is financially covered and that fellows receive a living stipend, but it publishes no payment schedule, no amount and no information on tax. It also says nothing about outside paid work during the residency under the J-1 visa. Those points are not officially confirmed, so ask the program office and plan your leave as unpaid unless your employer agrees otherwise in writing.
Required Documents
You submit a CV, a letter of intent, four short essays, and four letters from other people. Harvard's published list contains no transcripts, language test scores, or degree attestation. The portal itself may show more fields, so open it early and read every line.
Required application materials for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028
| Document | Limit or rule | Who provides it |
|---|---|---|
| CV or resume | No length stated | You |
| Letter of intent | No more than 1.5 pages | You |
| Four essays | No more than 2,000 characters each | You |
| Letter of institutional commitment | Must support your proposal and document the April leave | Your home institution |
| Letter of mentor commitment | From a champion of your development | Someone in your organization or network |
| Two additional reference letters | At least one from your current or most recent engagement, different from the mentor letter | Two referees |
The Four Support Letters
Four letters is the part of this application that fails on timing. Your employer's letter must do two jobs: support your proposal and confirm in writing that you can be away in April 2028. A generic "good employee" reference does not satisfy that. Send each writer a short brief with your project, the deadline in their time zone, and the exact points Harvard asks them to cover.
Ask all four writers at least three weeks ahead. If a letter arrives as a large scan, shrink it with our PDF Compressor before upload, so you aren't fighting a file size limit on deadline night.
The Letter of Intent and Four Essays
The letter of intent should describe your global health journey and why the fellowship would be transformative for your organization and your country. The four essays then cover separate questions, so don't repeat the letter in them.
- Essay 1: your plan for career development and training activities.
- Essay 2: your project plan.
- Essay 3: your plan to provide mentoring.
- Essay 4: the fellowship's impact on your organization, your field, and your home country.
At 2,000 characters, each essay is roughly 300 words, so every sentence must carry a fact. Our guide on how to write a winning motivation letter explains the evidence-first method, and our Motivation Letter Word Counter helps you keep the 1.5-page letter in bounds.
How to Apply: Step by Step
Apply through the online portal linked from Harvard's fellowship page, after confirming eligibility and collecting your four letters. The six steps below follow Harvard's published requirements, in the order that avoids last-week panic.
Run through the decision table above. If one rule is unclear, email HGHI_Fellowships@harvard.edu now, not in the final week.
Keep the letter within 1.5 pages and tie it to your organization and country.
Draft each one in a text editor first and count characters, so the portal does not cut a sentence off.
Request the institutional commitment, the mentor commitment, and two reference letters, and give each writer your deadline in their own time zone.
Open the official fellowship page and use its Apply button. Aim to finish before November 8, because one Harvard page lists that date.
Harvard says selected applicants will be notified in spring 2027. It publishes no interview stage.
There is no separate admission application. The fellowship is the whole process, so you do not apply to a university and a scholarship in two stages.
How Are Fellows Selected?
Harvard publishes no scoring rubric, no panel details and no interview stage. What the pages do reveal is what the application is built to test: leadership experience and potential, a concrete development and project plan, a credible mentoring plan, and real institutional backing.
The documents show the logic. Four support letters and an employer commitment are heavy requirements for a reason. Harvard wants proof that your organization will release you and that you will bring the learning home.
Your Real Chances
Harvard publishes no acceptance rate and no applicant count, so we can't give you a percentage. We can show you the scale of the prize, using the cohorts listed on Harvard's page. They are small, and the list shows no 2025 cohort, so confirm with the office that you are applying to a regular annual intake.
Fellows listed per cohort on Harvard's LEAD Fellowship page
| Cohort | Fellows listed |
|---|---|
| 2019 | 4 |
| 2020 | 3 |
| 2021 | 5 |
| 2022 | 4 |
| 2023 | 4 |
| 2024 | 2 |
| 2026 | 4 |
Two to five seats per cohort means a strong profile is necessary and not sufficient. The applications that stand out are specific: a named project, a named mentee group, an employer letter with dates, and essays that don't repeat each other. Treat this as a competitive fellowship, and prepare as you would for the hardest one on your list.
After Selection: Visa and Next Steps
Once selected, your first tasks are paperwork, not travel. Harvard lists academic credentialing, obtaining a J-1 visa and planning your spring courses as deliverables of the virtual phase, and it says visa fees are covered.
What Happens Next
Coaching begins in the first few months of the fellowship, and mentor meetings are encouraged monthly. The residency is expected in April 2028 for six weeks, and coaching resumes after classes to help with your return. Harvard has not published visa processing times, so contact the program office about timing as soon as you are selected, and keep your passport valid well beyond April 2028.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
- Counting student jobs as experience. Harvard excludes work done as a university student from the 10 years.
- Treating the employer letter as a formality. It must document your April leave, not just praise you.
- Ignoring the mentoring essay. The fellowship exists to produce mentors of future women leaders, so a weak Essay 3 hurts.
- Missing the two-year fellowship rule. A full-time fellowship of four months or more in the prior two years can rule you out.
- Trusting a third-party date. Listings show November 8, 15 and 16. Use Harvard's page.
- Assuming "fully funded" means salary replacement. Harvard covers the residency, and it doesn't mention your salary.
- Repeating the letter of intent in the essays. The four essays each answer a different question.
Official Sources and Verification Note
- Harvard LEAD Fellowship page, Harvard Global Health Institute (opened November 4, 2026)
- 2027-2028 Harvard LEAD Fellowship application announcement, Harvard Global Health Institute (October 5, 2026, opened November 4, 2026)
We read both Harvard pages above in full on November 4, 2026 and took every fact in this guide from them. Three discrepancies exist. The announcement's search description says November 8, but its body and the program page say November 15. The announcement says Cambridge while the program page says Boston for the residency. And the two pages describe the housing and flight coverage in slightly different ways. We have not spoken to Harvard, and we have not tested the application portal. Confirm any point that matters to you with HGHI_Fellowships@harvard.edu.

What is the deadline for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028?
The deadline is 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, November 15, 2026, according to the Harvard Global Health Institute fellowship page. In Pakistan that moment falls at 9:59 AM PKT on Monday, November 16. One Harvard post lists November 8 in its search description, so submit early rather than test the margin.
Is the Harvard LEAD Fellowship fully funded?
Harvard calls it fully funded for the in-person part. It states that visa fees, housing and flights are covered and that a living stipend is provided during the April 2028 residency. No dollar amount is published, and your salary during the leave is not mentioned. The virtual months carry no listed cost.
Who can apply for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship 2027-2028?
You need a master's degree, at least 10 years of full-time global health experience, substantial leadership experience, and a base in a low- or middle-income country. Harvard says candidates nominate themselves and welcomes all genders. You must also be eligible for a J-1 visa and free for six weeks in April 2028.
Can men apply for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship?
Harvard's eligibility text welcomes all genders and gender identities and states no women-only rule. The fellowship's purpose, though, is to prepare leaders who will mentor future women leaders, and one essay asks for your mentoring plan. If you are unsure, email the fellowship office before investing time.
Can Pakistani applicants apply for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship?
Yes, if you are based and working in Pakistan. Nationality is not restricted on the official pages, and a Pakistan fellow appears in the 2019 cohort. You still need every requirement, including your employer's written commitment and a six-week leave in April 2028.
Do I have to leave my job for the whole year?
No. Harvard says fellows are not expected to be removed from work responsibilities during the fall semester, and engagement then is light. You need leave only for the six-week residency in April 2028, and your employer must commit to that leave in writing.
What documents are required for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship?
You submit a CV, a letter of intent of no more than 1.5 pages, four essays of up to 2,000 characters each, a letter of institutional commitment, a letter of mentor commitment, and two more reference letters. At least one reference must come from your current or most recent professional engagement.
When will I hear back about the Harvard LEAD Fellowship?
Harvard says selected applicants will be notified in spring 2027. The fellowship then runs from September 1, 2027 to August 31, 2028, with the in-person residency in April 2028. Harvard does not publish an interview schedule or the number of seats, so expect a wait of several months after the deadline.
Is there an application fee or an IELTS requirement?
Harvard's published application list does not mention an application fee, an IELTS or TOEFL score, or transcripts. Treat that as what is published rather than a guarantee, because the online portal can show additional fields. Email HGHI_Fellowships@harvard.edu if a portal field is unclear.
