EPFL E3 Summer Internship 2027 Switzerland | Fully Funded & Stipend

Author: Syed Arbaz Ali Rizvi. Published: October 24, 2026. Last verified: October 24, 2026. Sources: Official EPFL E3 pages

The EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 is a paid research placement at EPFL in Switzerland for Bachelor and Master students from other universities. Applications close on November 1, 2026, at 11:55 PM Swiss time (CET), which is 5:55 PM ET, 2:55 PM PT, and 3:55 AM PKT on November 2. Selected interns receive a monthly living allowance of CHF 1,800 or CHF 2,500, depending on the lab’s city, plus a travel refund. PhD students and EPFL students cannot apply.

If you are reading this in the last week of October, the clock matters more than anything else on this page. The portal accepts no late files, and you cannot edit an application after you submit it. Use the next few days to finish your motivation letter and choose your research domains, then submit with a time buffer.

I wrote this guide from the official E3 pages, which I reviewed on October 24, 2026. It adds what those pages leave out: time zone conversions, a clear split between eligibility and selection, and separate sections for Pakistani, US, and other international applicants.

Overview

E3 stands for EPFL Excellence in Engineering. The School of Engineering runs it, and it places students from other universities inside a research group for a summer. The program page also mentions a workshop and a social event that bring all E3 interns together.

More than 100 laboratories have committed to hosting E3 participants. The program is still small. An EPFL news item reports that the 2024 edition welcomed 40 students from 15 countries, hosted by 28 laboratories.

How I checked this guide

On October 24, 2026, I read the E3 Apply, Eligibility and Selection, FAQ, At a Glance, and Choose your Lab pages. I also read EPFL’s separate Excellence Research Internship page. Then I compared the facts with several third-party posts. Some of those posts call E3 fully funded, and some show one stipend figure for every city, while EPFL lists two. This guide uses only what EPFL states, and it marks anything the official pages do not say.

Research domains you can choose

The application form asks you to select up to three research domains from EPFL’s official list of 72. You may also name up to three host labs, but that part is optional. I grouped the domains below to make the list easier to scan. The names are EPFL’s own.

13 domains

Computing, data, and AI

Artificial Intelligence; Data science; Machine learning; Learning & Decision systems; Future of computing; Quantum computing; Optimization; Image processing; Signal processing; Computational engineering; Simulation and computation; Multiphysics simulations; Multi-scale dynamics.

14 domains

Electronics and communication

Analog circuit design; Bioelectronics; Communication systems; Electrical engineering; Electromagnetics; Flexible Electronics; HF and VHF circuits; Internet Of Things; Microwaves; Nanoelectronics; Semiconductor materials; Sensors; Smart grids; VLSI design.

9 domains

Light, heat, and fluids

Acoustics; Laser technology; Optics; Photonics; Photovoltaics; Thermodynamics; Heat and mass transfer; Fluid mechanics; Solid mechanics.

14 domains

Materials and nanoscience

Biomaterials; Composite materials; Inorganic materials; Magnetic materials; Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgy; Micro-Nanosystems; Nanotechnology; Organic materials; Polymers and Soft Materials; Powder Technology; Soft materials; Surface and interface science; Theory and simulation of materials.

14 domains

Machines, robots, and manufacturing

Additive manufacturing; Advanced manufacturing; Autonomous systems; Controls; Mechanical design; Mechanical engineering; Mechatronics; Microengineering; Microfluidics; Product design; Robotics; Space Technology; Sports Technology; Transport and mobility.

5 domains

Health and bioengineering

Bioengineering; Bio-Inspired Design and Systems; Biomechanics; Neural Engineering & Prosthetics; Personalized Health.

3 domains

Energy and sustainability

Energy; Green energy; Sustainability.

You may see other posts, and even some graphics, that list fields such as neurotechnology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. Those words are not on EPFL’s domain list. Because the School of Engineering runs E3, describe your background through the closest engineering domain. A physics student might look at Photonics, Optics, or Theory and simulation of materials. A student interested in neurotechnology might start with Neural Engineering & Prosthetics or Bioelectronics. That is my reading, not an EPFL rule, so check the E3 host lab database before you decide.

EPFL’s Excellence Research Internship page also points computer science and life sciences students to separate summer programs with their own rules. Read those pages if your degree fits there better.

Who Can Apply

These are the hard rules. If you miss one, your application cannot proceed, however strong your grades are.

  • You are enrolled in a Bachelor or Master program when you apply, and you stay enrolled for the whole internship.
  • You have completed at least your first two Bachelor years when you apply.
  • You study at a university other than EPFL.
  • You are not a PhD student.
  • Your university is not one of the ten partner universities listed below.
  • Your field falls within engineering, science, and technology.

Edge cases the official FAQ answers

  • Second-year Bachelor students: If you only finish your second year before summer, you are not eligible. The two completed years must already be on your transcript.
  • Master graduates before summer: You may still apply if you are a student at the time of application. EPFL says you need student status during the entire internship, so confirm your end date with your university.
  • New Master's students: If you have no Master's grades yet, submit your Bachelor GPA and transcripts, and explain the situation in the comment fields.

Partner universities that cannot use E3

Students at the universities below have a separate partnership with EPFL. They are not eligible for E3 and should apply to the Excellence Research Internship Program instead.

CountryPartner universities
United StatesCarnegie Mellon University; Georgia Institute of Technology; Johns Hopkins University; University of California, San Diego; University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
CanadaMcGill University; University of British Columbia; University of Toronto; University of Waterloo
SingaporeNanyang Technological University (NTU)

How Winners Are Selected

Meeting the eligibility rules gets you into the pool. Selection is a separate step, and EPFL describes it as competitive. The official criteria are:

  • You are in the top 10% of your class with a high GPA.
  • You plan to pursue PhD studies. Previous lab experience is a plus.
  • Your application convinces the committee of your excellence and passion for science, and your statement of purpose explains your goals and your choice of host labs.

The process runs in this order. The portal closes, host labs screen the applications, and some labs invite candidates to an online interview. Offers come from faculty members, and applicants who receive none get a closure email around mid-March.

My reading of the criteria

EPFL lists the top 10% rule under selection, not eligibility, so it will not block your submission. It does tell you how the pool is judged. This is analysis, not an official statement. EPFL does not publish a minimum GPA, an acceptance rate, or the number of places for 2027, so I have not stated any.

Recommendation letters are welcome but not required. EPFL says that leaving them out has no negative effect on your file.

Funding and Benefits

E3 interns receive a monthly allowance for the entire internship to cover housing and living costs in Switzerland. The amount depends on where the host lab is located.

CHF 1,800

Lausanne, Sion, Fribourg

Monthly living allowance for labs in these three cities, prorated to the actual duration.

CHF 2,500

Geneva, Neuchรขtel

Monthly living allowance for labs in these two cities, prorated to the actual duration.

Travel

Refund on request

Travel costs are refunded after the host lab approves them. The program page names a second-class train ticket and a low-cost or economy airfare.

Community

Workshop and social event

The E3 program organizes a workshop and a social event for all interns.

What the allowance adds up to

The table below is my own arithmetic. It assumes EPFL pays the monthly amount pro rata for whole months. Your actual payment depends on your agreed dates.

Internship lengthLabs paying CHF 1,800 per monthLabs paying CHF 2,500 per month
2 monthsCHF 3,600CHF 5,000
3 monthsCHF 5,400CHF 7,500

Why I do not call it fully funded: EPFL describes a living allowance and a travel refund. You find and pay for your own housing from that allowance, and embassy visa fees are yours. That fits Partial Funding on this site, even though many posts online use bigger labels.

What works in your favor

  • A monthly allowance for the whole internship
  • Travel costs refunded on request
  • Real lab research under an EPFL host
  • No English certificate required

What to plan for

  • You arrange your own housing
  • Embassy visa fees are your cost
  • The travel refund needs host lab approval
  • Admission is highly competitive
Program changes

EPFL states that, because of the current geopolitical situation, it may change the participation conditions of E3 or cancel the program. It also says it cannot be held liable if that happens. Check the official FAQ before you spend money.

Required Documents

EPFL accepts PDF files only. Prepare these four items before you open the portal.

01

CV

Any layout, as a PDF of at most 5 MB. If your file is too large, shrink it with a free PDF compressor.

02

Academic transcripts

Complete transcripts covering your whole academic career so far. If they are not in English or French, upload the original and your own translation. The translation does not need to be official.

03

Motivation letter

Also called a statement of purpose or research statement. Explain your scientific interests, why you apply, and your target host labs. EPFL sets no strict page limit but recommends two pages at most. Read my guide to writing a winning motivation letter first.

04

Passport or national ID

Upload a passport scan. If you do not have a passport yet, a national ID scan is accepted, even if it is not in English.

Optional

Recommendation letters

Not mandatory. There is no separate platform, so you upload them as an additional attachment.

Optional

English certificates

Not required. You may upload IELTS, TOEFL, or similar scores as extra documents.

The form also asks for up to three research domains, which is compulsory, and up to three host labs, which is optional. Once you submit, you can no longer change anything.

For your transcripts, copy your GPA exactly as your university prints it. EPFL tells applicants not to rescale it to 0 to 100 or 0 to 4. A CGPA calculator can help you understand your own grades, but do not enter the converted number.

English Language Requirements

EPFL does not require an English certificate to apply. If you have one, you can attach it as an extra document. Most labs use English for research and daily work, while French is the main language outside campus.

My advice is simple. Upload a certificate only if the score is current and strong. Otherwise, let your English show in the motivation letter, because the committee reads that document closely.

Costs

Here is what the official pages say about costs. I list amounts in Swiss francs, as EPFL does, and I have not converted them into dollars or rupees because exchange rates change daily. Use a live converter when you budget.

  • Housing: You find your own accommodation. Host lab staff usually share suggestions such as student forums and residences.
  • Visa fees: Some embassies charge a fee when you collect the visa, and EPFL says this is the student’s cost.
  • Travel: EPFL refunds it on request after the host lab approves. My reading is that you may pay first and claim later, so keep your receipts.
  • Daily living: The monthly allowance is meant to cover this.

Not stated on the official pages I reviewed: an application fee, tuition charges, and health insurance arrangements. Do not assume any of them. Ask the host lab about insurance once you receive an offer.

Application Procedure

The flowchart shows the full route from checking your eligibility to receiving an offer. The red step is the deadline, and the green step is the goal. The numbered steps below explain each stage.

EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 application flowchart Eight steps: confirm you qualify, pick three research domains, shortlist up to three host labs, prepare your CV and transcripts, write the motivation letter, submit by November 1, 2026, at 11:55 PM Swiss time, prepare for online interviews, then receive an offer and start the visa and travel steps. 1 Confirm you qualify 2 Pick three research domains 3 Shortlist up to three labs 4 Prepare CV and transcripts 5 Write the motivation letter 6 Submit by 1 Nov, 11:55 PM CET 7 Prepare for online interviews 8 Offer, visa, and travel
1
Confirm you qualify

Check the eligibility list above. If your university is a partner school, go to the Excellence Research Internship page instead.

2
Pick three research domains

This is compulsory. Choose from the official domain list, and pick domains that match your degree and your plans.

3
Shortlist up to three host labs

This is optional, but EPFL says a careful choice raises your chances. Browse the E3 host lab database and explain your picks in your letter. If you are unsure, leave it blank.

4
Prepare your CV and transcripts

Export everything as PDF. Keep the CV under 5 MB, and include originals next to any translation.

5
Write the motivation letter

Link your past work to the labs you chose and to your PhD plans. Check the length with a motivation letter word counter.

6
Submit before the deadline

The portal closes on November 1, 2026 at 11:55 PM Swiss time. You cannot edit after submitting, and EPFL accepts no late uploads.

7
Prepare for online interviews

Labs can contact you any time after the deadline until early March. Check your email, including spam, and be ready to discuss your background and possible start dates.

8
Receive an offer and start the visa

If a faculty member offers you a place, EPFL sends detailed visa instructions. Agree your dates with the lab, and remember that no internship starts before May 1.

Deadlines and Time Zones

IMPORTANT DEADLINE

November 1, 2026 at 11:55 PM Swiss local time. Switzerland changes from CEST to CET on October 25, 2026, so the deadline runs on CET (UTC+1). In Pakistan, that is 3:55 AM on Monday, November 2.

The timeline shows the main dates from the official pages. The two middle dates are relative, because EPFL gives windows, not fixed days.

EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 timeline Six events in order: Swiss clocks change on October 25, 2026; the portal closes on November 1, 2026 at 11:55 PM CET; host labs may interview after the deadline; offers may arrive about two months later; closure emails go out in mid-March 2027; internships can start from May 1, 2027. 1 25 Oct 2026 Swiss clocks move from CEST to CET. The deadline then runs on CET. 2 1 Nov 2026, 11:55 PM CET: The application portal closes. Late applications are not accepted. 3 After the deadline, host labs may invite you to an online interview, no later than early March. 4 About 2 months later, a faculty member may send an internship offer after interviews. 5 Mid-March 2027: Applicants without an offer get an email saying selection has closed. 6 1 May to October 2027 Internships can start from 1 May, with dates agreed with the lab.

Deadline in your time zone

US clocks go back on November 1, 2026 at 2:00 AM local time, so Eastern and Pacific times already use standard time when the portal closes.

LocationLocal timeDate
Switzerland (CET, official)11:55 PMSunday, November 1, 2026
GMT (UTC)10:55 PMSunday, November 1, 2026
US Eastern (ET)5:55 PMSunday, November 1, 2026
US Pacific (PT)2:55 PMSunday, November 1, 2026
Pakistan (PKT)3:55 AMMonday, November 2, 2026
India (IST)4:25 AMMonday, November 2, 2026

Do not plan to submit in the last hour. Add the date to your application deadline tracker today and set a personal deadline at least two days earlier.

Residence Permit or Visa

EPFL handles the visa steps only after you are accepted. Here is what the official FAQ confirms.

  • Accepted students receive detailed instructions to start the visa procedure. In some cases, EPFL requests the visa directly.
  • Visa decisions belong to the competent authorities. EPFL cannot predict delays, but it offers suggestions and help if problems arise.
  • If you are not an EU or EFTA citizen, you must send a scan of a valid passport once a lab offers you a position.
  • For the visa, your passport must stay valid for at least six months after the end date of your internship.

Visa rules depend on your nationality and your travel dates. I have not verified current processing times for any embassy, so check your local Swiss representation early.

For Pakistani Applicants

Pakistani students are a big part of my audience, so I want to be practical here. The official pages place no nationality limit on E3, which means your position depends on your study level, your university, and the quality of your file.

Plan around the PKT deadline

The portal closes at 3:55 AM on Monday, November 2. Treat Friday, October 30 as your real submission day, because power cuts or a slow connection near the end could cost you the application.

Transcripts and GPA

Request a PDF transcript from your examination office now, and make sure it lists every semester so far. In a four-year BS, the two completed years usually mean your first four semesters. That is my reading, so confirm it against your own transcript. Enter your CGPA exactly as printed, for example on the 4.00 scale, and do not convert it.

ID and passport

For the application, a CNIC scan is accepted if you do not have a passport. If you receive an offer, you will need a valid passport that stays valid at least six months past your internship end date. If your passport is due, start renewing it now.

Attestation and proof of class standing

I did not find degree attestation, HEC attestation, or IBCC equivalence among the E3 application documents, so do not pay for them just to apply. Embassy checklists are separate, and I have not verified them here. Many Pakistani transcripts do not show class rank, so state your standing in the letter and, if your department can provide one, attach a short recommendation letter that confirms it.

For a letter structure that suits research programs, see my motivation letter guide.

For US Applicants

Most of my traffic comes from the United States, so this section covers the questions I expect from US students.

Class standing

You need two completed Bachelor years at the time of application. In US terms, that means you have already finished your sophomore year, so current juniors, seniors, and graduate students qualify. Sophomores cannot apply, even if they finish the year before summer.

Check whether your school is a partner

Five US universities are partners: Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, UC San Diego, and Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Their students cannot use E3. They apply through the Excellence Research Internship Program, which has its own rules: nomination by your home international office, an 800-word letter limit, two references, and a November 30, 2026 application deadline. Read that page fully before you decide.

Transcripts, GPA, and credit

EPFL accepts transcripts in whatever form your university provides them. Enter your GPA exactly as printed, for example on a 4.0 scale. If your university recognizes the internship as part of your study plan and the host professor agrees, the internship may run longer than three months. Ask your study abroad office about credit early.

Your clock

The deadline is 5:55 PM ET or 2:55 PM PT on Sunday, November 1. Do not wait for the afternoon, because you cannot fix mistakes after submission.

For Other International Applicants

If you study outside Pakistan and the US, the same E3 rules apply, but your practical problems differ. These are the points I would check first.

Partner universities in Canada and Singapore

Students at McGill, UBC, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, and NTU Singapore cannot apply through E3. They use the Excellence Research Internship Program instead.

Passport rules

EPFL treats EU and EFTA citizens differently from everyone else. If you are a non-EU and non-EFTA citizen, you must provide a valid passport scan when a lab offers you a place. The passport must also stay valid for six months after your internship ends.

Different academic calendars

Some universities publish final grades after the deadline. EPFL grants no extension for this, whatever the reason. Upload the transcript you have, add the original beside any translation, and use the comment fields to explain what is still pending.

Find your own time zone

The deadline equals 10:55 PM GMT on Sunday, November 1. Add or subtract your UTC offset from that time. For example, a student in UTC+3 has until 1:55 AM on Monday, November 2. Always count back at least two days for a safe submission.

After You Receive an Offer

An offer is not the finish line. These are the tasks that follow, in a sensible order.

  1. Confirm start and end dates with the host lab. They must fall between May 1 and October 2027.
  2. Follow EPFL’s visa instructions and check that your passport meets the six-month rule.
  3. Find housing. Ask the lab’s administrative staff for the forums and residences they recommend.
  4. Book travel only after the host lab approves the cost, and keep every receipt for the refund request.
  5. Ask your home university about credit if you want the internship in your study plan.

Common Mistakes

  • Rescaling your GPA: EPFL wants the number in the format on your transcript.
  • Uploading non-PDF files: PDF is the only supported format, and the CV limit is 5 MB.
  • Sending a translation alone: Include the original transcript too.
  • Writing a generic letter: Name your domains and labs, and connect them to your background.
  • Waiting for final grades: No extension exists, so submit with what you have.
  • Emailing EPFL for status updates: The FAQ asks applicants not to, because of the volume of applications.
  • Calling it fully funded in your budget: Plan for housing and visa costs.

Scam Warning Signs

Popular programs attract fake offers. The official pages I reviewed mention no application fee, and E3 applications run through one portal.

Warning signs
  • Anyone who asks you to pay for a “guaranteed” E3 place
  • Agents who offer to submit your application for a fee
  • Emails from free mail addresses that claim to speak for EPFL
  • Links to application sites that do not start from the official E3 page
  • Requests for your passport scan by chat or email

How to Apply Safely

Start from the official E3 Apply page every time. That page links to the portal, so you never need a search result or a message. After you submit, save a PDF copy of everything you uploaded, and note the date and time of your submission.

Rule of thumb: Upload your passport only inside the official portal. No agent, group admin, or social media account needs a copy of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 fully funded?

Not in the sense of covering every cost. EPFL pays a monthly living allowance of CHF 1,800 or CHF 2,500, depending on the host lab’s city, prorated to the actual duration. Travel costs are refunded on request after the host lab approves them. You arrange and pay for your own housing, and embassy visa fees are your responsibility.

Yes, unless your university is one of the five US partner schools. Students at Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, UC San Diego, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign cannot use E3 and apply to the Excellence Research Internship Program instead.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL for the E3 internship?

No. English certificates are not required at application. If you already have one, you can upload it as an additional document.

Can PhD students apply for EPFL E3?

No. PhD students are not eligible for E3. EPFL suggests that they contact researchers or laboratories directly and arrange a visit themselves.

Can I choose my EPFL E3 project before applying?

No. There is no list of predefined projects. You must choose up to three research domains and may name up to three host labs. Labs then propose projects to the candidates they select.

How long is the EPFL E3 internship?

The program page says 8 to 12 weeks, and the FAQ states a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 3 months. You agree on exact dates with the host lab, and no internship can start before May 1.

Does EPFL provide housing for E3 interns?

No. You are responsible for finding your own accommodation. The host lab’s administrative staff will almost always suggest resources such as student forums and residences.

When will I find out if I am selected for EPFL E3?

Host labs may invite you to an online interview any time after the deadline, and no later than early March. An offer may arrive within about two months of the deadline. Around mid-March, applicants without an offer receive an email saying the selection process has closed.

Final Words

E3 is a strong option if you are a Bachelor or Master student with solid research potential and a clear lab in mind. The three actions that matter most are to confirm your eligibility on the official page, to build a focused file around your domains and labs, and to submit well before 11:55 PM Swiss time on November 1.

If you are still comparing options, the Read More list below has related scholarship guides. If you have questions, leave a comment, and I will check the official pages again. You can also read how I handle corrections in my editorial and corrections policy.
