Dalarna University Master's Scholarships 2027: Eligibility, Amounts, and Deadlines

Dalarna University's master's scholarships for 2027 are partial tuition waivers, not full funding. If you rank a Dalarna master's programme as your first choice on UniversityAdmissions.se, submit Dalarna's scholarship form by 15 February 2027, and are admitted as a fee-paying student, the university guarantees a SEK 5,000 reduction on your first-semester tuition. A second award, the Academic Excellence Scholarship, can cut tuition by SEK 5,000 to SEK 15,000 per semester, with a programme distinction of up to SEK 30,000, depending on the programme and your grades.

Overview: How Dalarna Funding Works

Dalarna University is a Swedish public university with campuses in Falun and Borlรƒ¤nge and a large catalogue of online programmes. Its master's programmes are taught in English and are open to international applicants. The 2027 intake is the autumn semester, which begins in late August 2027. Applications open on 16 October 2026 through UniversityAdmissions.se, Sweden's national admission portal.

There are three different funding routes that applicants often mix up. Each one has a different funder, a different rulebook, and a different deadline.

  • Choose Dalarna First Scholarship. Run by Dalarna University. It is a guaranteed SEK 5,000 tuition waiver in the first semester for admitted, fee-paying master's students who rank a Dalarna programme first and submit the university's scholarship form on time.
  • Academic Excellence Scholarship. Also run by Dalarna University. It rewards strong academic results during your studies, with semester awards and a programme distinction. The amount depends on the programme.
  • Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarship for Global Professionals. Run by the Swedish Institute, a government agency. It is a separate, fully funded award for citizens of 34 listed countries. It is not part of Dalarna's own scholarship scheme, and Pakistan and the United States are not on the SI list.

The most important point for your budget is simple: Dalarna's own awards reduce tuition, but they do not pay your rent, food, flights, insurance, or residence permit fee. "Partial funding" is the correct description. If you need full funding, the SI route is the one to check, but only if your citizenship is on the list.

One application, several steps. Your programme application, your ranking, your fee payment, your document upload, and Dalarna's scholarship form are separate actions. Completing one does not complete the others. The scholarship form is especially easy to miss because it sits on Dalarna's website, not on UniversityAdmissions.se.

Who Can Apply

Dalarna's scholarship page describes the award in broad terms, and the fine print matters. Use the table below as a checklist. If any single row fails, the guarantee does not apply.

Eligibility checklist for Dalarna's master's scholarships
RequirementWhat the rule says
Degree levelYou must apply to a master's programme of 60 or 120 credits. Bachelor's programmes and standalone courses are excluded.
Fee statusYou must be required to pay tuition fees. That normally means you are not a citizen of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland.
First choiceYou must rank a Dalarna master's programme as your first choice on UniversityAdmissions.se.
Programme applicationYou must submit it by 15 January 2027 at midnight CET and pay the SEK 900 application fee by 1 February 2027.
DocumentsYou must upload your supporting documents by 1 February 2027.
Scholarship formYou must submit Dalarna's own scholarship form by 15 February 2027.
AdmissionYou must be admitted and you must start the programme.
Academic ExcellenceYou must be enrolled, take 30 credits per semester, earn at least 15 credits at top grades, have results reported within six weeks, and follow academic integrity rules.

The "first choice" rule is the one that catches the most people. Swedish admissions use a ranked list. The guarantee requires that a Dalarna master's programme was your top choice. Dalarna's FAQ adds a useful nuance: if you are admitted to a different Dalarna programme than the one you ranked first, you may still receive the award as long as a Dalarna programme was your top choice. If Dalarna appears below another university on your list, the guarantee does not apply. Order your list accordingly.

The fee status rule has a practical consequence. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not pay tuition in Sweden, so there is no tuition for Dalarna to waive. They are not the target group for these awards. If you hold dual citizenship and one passport is from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, check your fee status with UniversityAdmissions.se before assuming you are eligible.

The degree level rule also matters. Dalarna offers a six-semester bachelor's programme in International Tourism Management, but it is not a master's programme and it does not qualify for these scholarships. If your goal is a bachelor's degree, budget for the full tuition and look for other funding.

Finally, the guarantee is not a promise of admission. It is a promise that admitted students who meet the criteria receive the award. You still have to compete for a place in the programme on your academic merits. A useful way to judge your readiness is to check your grades against the programme's requirements and to use a CGPA calculator to see where you stand before you apply.

Master's Programmes and Tuition

Dalarna publishes tuition per programme, and the amounts differ sharply. The table below lists the master's programmes named on Dalarna's scholarship page, their length, total tuition, and the maximum Academic Excellence award available for that programme. All figures are in Swedish kronor (SEK) and come from Dalarna's official pages.

Not eligible: International Tourism Management is a six-semester bachelor's programme with total tuition of SEK 291,420. It does not qualify for the master's scholarships, even though Dalarna lists it among its international programmes.

Four of the programmes above are taught online: Applied English Linguistics, Democracy, Citizenship and Change, English with a Specialization in Literature in English, and Intercultural Literature Studies. Online study can reduce your living costs because you may be able to study from your home country, but it also affects your residence permit plans. If you study online from outside Sweden, you do not need a Swedish residence permit for that programme. Confirm the format on the programme page before you plan a move.

Dalarna's scholarship page and its fee page are not perfectly aligned on one programme. Sustainable Organisational Development appears in the scholarship table with award amounts, but its tuition is not shown on the fee page reviewed for this guide. If that programme is on your shortlist, ask study@du.se for the current tuition before you build a budget.

Programmes with a distinctive application item

Solar Energy Engineering is the clearest example of a programme-specific requirement. Dalarna asks applicants to submit a 90-second video statement of purpose. That is separate from your CV, your transcripts, and your English test. Prepare it early, keep it under the time limit, and check the programme page for the current instructions. Other programmes may add their own requirements, so read each programme page rather than assuming a single checklist applies to all of them.

How Winners Are Selected

The three funding routes use very different selection logic. Dalarna's own awards are criteria-based, while the SI award is competitive. This table shows the difference in one view.

Selection logic for each funding route
AwardWho decidesBasisCompetition
Choose Dalarna FirstDalarna UniversityFirst choice, scholarship form on time, admitted, fee-payingNone. Guaranteed if you meet the criteria.
Academic ExcellenceDalarna UniversityGrades, 30 credits, at least 15 top-grade credits, results within six weeks, academic integrityNone. Everyone who qualifies receives it.
SI ScholarshipSwedish InstituteWork experience, leadership, motivation, and the country listYes. Competitive and limited.

Dalarna is unusually explicit about the non-competitive nature of its awards. Its page says that everyone who meets the criteria receives the scholarship and that assessment is objective. That does not mean the award is automatic in a technical sense. You still have to submit the form, rank the programme first, and be admitted. But you are not competing against other applicants for a fixed number of slots.

Academic Excellence works in a different way because it depends on your results after you start. The conditions include enrolment, a full 30-credit semester load, at least 15 credits at top grades, reporting of results within six weeks, and compliance with academic integrity rules. You apply for the award each semester. The application windows are 1 to 15 February and 1 to 15 July. There is no cap on the number of awards, so the limiting factor is your performance, not a quota.

One inconsistency is worth flagging. Dalarna's FAQ describes the Choose Dalarna First award as being for campus-based programmes in one place, while another answer says online master's students can receive Dalarna scholarships from 2026. The safest approach is to check the current wording on the scholarship page for your specific programme and to confirm your case with study@du.se before you rely on the award. Do not assume that an online programme is automatically included or automatically excluded.

Another inconsistency concerns when recipients are announced. One Dalarna page refers to publication by 10 October, while an FAQ answer refers to 1 April for the autumn intake. The university does not appear to have a single, consistent public date. Plan your finances around the admission result on 1 April 2027 and treat any scholarship announcement date as provisional until Dalarna confirms it in writing.

Funding and Benefits

The guaranteed award is small but predictable. SEK 5,000 is deducted from your first-semester tuition. The exact invoice depends on your programme. Here are four worked examples using official tuition rates.

First-semester tuition after the guaranteed SEK 5,000 waiver
ProgrammeTuition per semester (SEK)First invoice after waiver (SEK)
Economics48,00043,000
Business Intelligence75,00070,000
Data Science75,00070,000
Solar Energy Engineering75,00070,000

The Academic Excellence amounts are more varied. The table below reproduces Dalarna's official figures. The "semester award" is the amount you can receive in a qualifying semester. The "programme distinction" is an additional amount for the programme as a whole. The "maximum total" is the most you could receive across the programme if you qualify every time.

Academic Excellence Scholarship amounts by programme (SEK)
ProgrammeSemester awardProgramme distinctionMaximum total
Applied English Linguistics5,00010,00020,000
Business Intelligence10,00015,00035,000

Tourism Destination Development10,00010,00030,000
Sustainable Organisational Development10,00010,00030,000

Put those numbers next to the tuition. Solar Energy Engineering has the largest maximum award at SEK 90,000, but its total tuition is SEK 300,000, so the award covers about 30 percent. Energy Efficient Built Environment has a maximum of SEK 50,000 against SEK 150,000, which is about 33 percent. Economics has a maximum of SEK 30,000 against SEK 96,000, which is about 31 percent. Even in the best case, you are still the majority funder of your degree.

The two Dalarna awards are separate. The guaranteed SEK 5,000 applies to your first semester. Academic Excellence is results-based and has application windows on 1 to 15 February and 1 to 15 July, so your first realistic window falls after you have started. Dalarna does not advertise a combined first-semester package that stacks both awards. If you plan to rely on both, ask study@du.se to confirm in writing how they interact in your first semester.

The SI scholarship is a different scale. It covers full tuition, a monthly grant of SEK 12,000, a travel grant, and membership in the SI network. It does not cover your UniversityAdmissions.se application fee or costs for family members, and it does not include insurance. The exact benefit package and the current terms are on the SI website, and you should read them there rather than relying on a summary. SI also states that if you receive its scholarship, Dalarna will not apply its own scholarship. In other words, you cannot stack SI and Dalarna money.

Dalarna notes that in most years, between five and ten of its admitted students receive an SI scholarship. It also lists the Dalarna programmes that were eligible for SI in 2026: Business Intelligence, Business Studies, Data Science, Energy Efficient Built Environment, Global Sexual Reproductive Health, and Solar Energy Engineering. The eligible list can change from year to year, so check the current SI call before you assume your programme is included.

Required Documents

Dalarna's scholarship form is short, but the underlying admission file is not. Prepare the admission documents first, because the scholarship decision depends on you being admitted. The list below covers the items most master's applicants need.

Passport

A valid passport with your full legal name. Use the same spelling everywhere, including your UniversityAdmissions.se account and your scholarship form.

Bachelor's degree

Your final degree certificate and full transcripts. If your degree is not finished yet, follow the portal's instructions for conditional documents.

English test result

IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, unless you qualify for a waiver. A medium-of-instruction letter is not accepted as proof.

Programme-specific items

Some programmes ask for extra material. Solar Energy Engineering requires a 90-second video statement of purpose.

Scholarship form

Dalarna's own form, submitted by 15 February 2027. Keep the on-screen confirmation, because Dalarna does not send an email confirmation.

Translations

If your documents are not in English or Swedish, follow the portal's translation rules. Do not upload unofficial translations without checking.

Dalarna does not publish a long, separate document list for the scholarship form itself. The form is tied to your programme application, and the university cross-checks it against your admission file. That is why consistency matters. If your name, programme, or fee status differs between the portal and the form, you create avoidable delays.

If a programme asks for a motivation letter or statement of purpose, write it for that programme rather than recycling a generic letter. A focused letter that explains why you chose Dalarna and how the programme fits your plans is more useful than a long personal history. You can check your draft against the programme's word limit with the motivation letter word counter, and you can read a structured approach in the guide on how to write a winning motivation letter.

Do not wait for an email. Dalarna states that it does not send a confirmation email after you submit the scholarship form. The on-screen confirmation is your proof. Save a screenshot or a PDF of the page with the date visible.

English Language Requirements

English proficiency is a separate hurdle from the scholarship. You must meet the programme's English requirement to be admitted, and admission is one of the scholarship conditions. Dalarna lists IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT explicitly. The table below summarises the thresholds stated on its entry requirements page.

English requirements stated by Dalarna University
TestOverall scoreSection requirement
IELTS Academic6.5No section below 5.5
TOEFL iBT, tests taken before 21 January 20269020 in writing
TOEFL iBT, tests taken from 21 January 20264.5 on the new scaleNo section below 4

The TOEFL change is a common source of confusion. ETS moved to a new score scale in January 2026, and Dalarna lists different requirements for tests taken before and after that date. Check which version of the test you are taking and match it to the correct row. If you took the test in late 2025, confirm with the university that your score is still treated under the old scale.

Dalarna also applies a waiver for applicants who have completed prior studies taught and examined entirely in English in certain countries. The list includes Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It also includes one year of full-time study in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, Antigua, Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, English-speaking Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent, Trinidad, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Pakistan is not on the waiver list. A letter from your university stating that the medium of instruction was English is not accepted as proof. Pakistani applicants should plan to take IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT and meet the stated threshold. If you are unsure how your score maps to the requirement, the IELTS band score calculator can help you check your overall and section scores before you book a retake.

Dalarna also published a temporary local exemption for 2027 applicants from India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka who hold a four-year technical or science bachelor's degree. This is a programme-specific concession, not a general waiver. If you rely on it, confirm with the university that it applies to your programme and intake, and keep the written confirmation with your application records.

Cost of Study and Living

Tuition is only one line in the budget. Sweden is an expensive country for everyday costs, and the residence permit process requires you to show that you can support yourself. The table below combines the main costs. All figures are in SEK and are based on official sources reviewed on 24 October 2026.

Estimated costs for a Dalarna master's student
ItemAmount (SEK)Notes
UniversityAdmissions application fee900One fee per semester, for non-EU, EEA, and Swiss applicants
Tuition, master's programme96,000 to 300,000Total programme cost, depending on length and programme
Residence permit fee1,500Adult applicant fee, paid to the Migration Agency
Maintenance requirement10,656 per month2026 figure. Recheck the 2027 amount before you apply.
Dalarna living budgetAbout 9,000 per monthFood, housing, local travel, phone, and leisure
Student housing4,000 to 6,500 per monthFurnished student rooms in Falun and Borlรƒ¤nge
One-year estimate, 96,000 tuition226,272Tuition, 12 months maintenance, permit, and application fee
Two-year estimate, 300,000 tuition558,144Tuition, 24 months maintenance, permit, and application fee

The two estimates are deliberately simple. The one-year figure is 96,000 in tuition plus 12 months at 10,656, plus 1,500 for the permit, plus 900 for the application fee. The two-year figure is 300,000 plus 24 months at 10,656, plus the same fees. Neither estimate includes flights, insurance, books, or a buffer for currency changes. Subtract SEK 5,000 from the first semester if you receive the guaranteed award.

Dalarna's own guide for international students uses a lower monthly living figure of about SEK 9,000, which is below the Migration Agency's maintenance requirement. That gap is not a contradiction. The Migration Agency figure is a formal requirement for the permit, while the university figure is a practical student budget. Budget with the higher figure to be safe, especially in your first months when you are buying bedding, kitchen items, and a phone plan.

Housing is the largest variable. Dalarna's guide lists furnished student rooms through Tunabyggen in Borlรƒ¤nge at roughly SEK 4,300 to 6,500 per month, with no rent in June and July for some contracts. Kopparstaden in Falun is around SEK 4,000. A room in a shared house can cost SEK 3,000 to 5,000, and a private apartment can run SEK 4,500 to 8,000. Apply for housing as soon as you accept your offer, because student housing in Sweden is allocated on a queue system rather than on demand.

Currency is another practical issue. Tuition and fees are set in SEK, so your cost in US dollars, Pakistani rupees, or euros depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay. A weaker rupee or a stronger krona can raise your effective cost after you have already budgeted. Keep a cushion of at least 10 percent and pay in SEK through a bank or a regulated transfer service rather than through an informal agent.

Application Procedure

The process has five main stages and several hard deadlines. The flowchart below shows the sequence. The steps after it explain what to do at each stage.

Dalarna University master's scholarship application flowchart for 2027 Five steps: apply and rank Dalarna first by 15 January 2027, upload documents and pay the fee by 1 February 2027, submit the Dalarna scholarship form by 15 February 2027, receive admission results on 1 April 2027, then pay tuition and apply for a residence permit before the semester starts in late August 2027. 1 Apply by 15 Jan 2027 Rank Dalarna as your first choice 2 Upload documents by 1 Feb Pay the SEK 900 fee on time 3 Submit the DU scholarship form by 15 Feb 2027 Separate from your application 4 Admission results on 1 April 2027 Check UniversityAdmissions 5 Pay tuition, then apply for your residence permit Studies start late Aug 2027

1

Shortlist programmes and check requirements

Start in October 2026, when the autumn 2027 catalogue opens. Read the programme page for the specific degree, not just the general university page. Confirm the length, tuition, campus or online format, English requirement, and any extra item such as a video statement. Note the total tuition so you can compare it with the maximum award.

2

Apply on UniversityAdmissions.se and rank Dalarna first

Create your account, add your chosen Dalarna master's programme, and place it at the top of your ranking. The deadline is 15 January 2027 at midnight CET. You can edit your ranking until the deadline, but do not leave it to the final hour. Screenshot your final ranking so you have evidence of the order you submitted.

3

Pay the fee and upload your documents

The application fee is SEK 900, and supporting documents are due by 1 February 2027. Pay through the official portal, not through an agent. Upload clear scans of your passport, degree certificate, transcripts, and English test result. If your documents are in another language, follow the portal's translation instructions exactly.

4

Submit Dalarna's scholarship form

This is the step that is separate from the national portal. The autumn 2027 form opens in January 2027, and the deadline is 15 February 2027. Dalarna does not send a confirmation email, so save the on-screen confirmation. If the form asks for your programme choice, make sure it matches the programme you ranked first on UniversityAdmissions.se.

5

Wait for the admission result

Results are published on 1 April 2027. If you are admitted, check your offer letter for the tuition amount and the deadline to accept. The guaranteed award is applied to your first-semester tuition, so the invoice should reflect it. If it does not, contact the university before you pay.

6

Accept the offer and pay tuition

Accept the offer through the portal by the stated deadline. Pay tuition through the official channel given by the university. Keep the receipt, because you will need proof of payment for your residence permit application. Do not pay a private agent to "secure" your place.

7

Apply for the residence permit

Apply online through the Swedish Migration Agency after you have paid tuition. The adult fee is SEK 1,500. You will need proof of admission, proof of funds in an account in your name, a valid passport, and health insurance. Dalarna informs the agency when your tuition is paid, so you do not send proof of payment yourself. The agency says about 75 percent of higher-education cases are decided within three months, so apply as early as you can.

8

Arrange housing and arrival

Apply for student housing as soon as you accept. Join the queue with Tunabyggen in Borlรƒ¤nge or Kopparstaden in Falun, and check the university's housing page for private options. Book your flight only after your permit is approved, and keep digital and printed copies of your admission letter, payment receipt, and insurance documents.

Deadlines and Time Zones

Sweden uses Central European Time (CET) in winter, which is one hour ahead of GMT and six hours ahead of US Eastern Time. The 15 January deadline is midnight CET, which falls on the evening of 14 January in the United States. Applicants who read "15 January" and wait until the 15th in New York or Los Angeles will miss it.

The table below converts the key deadlines into four time zones. Use it to set calendar reminders, and remember that daylight saving time changes in March 2027, which shifts the US offset by one hour after that date.

24 February 2027, 14:59 CET (SI)24 February, 1:59 PM24 February, 6:59 PM24 February, 8:59 AM24 February, 5:59 AM

Read the fine print. Dalarna publishes the date for its scholarship form, not a precise hour. The 23:59 assumption in the table is a safety margin, not an official rule. Submit at least 48 hours early so that a payment delay or a slow upload does not cost you the award. The SI deadline is precise: 14:59 CET on 24 February 2027.

If you are managing several applications, a simple tracker prevents deadline collisions. You can use the scholarship deadline tracker to list each university, its portal, its fee, and its scholarship form date in one place. The 15 January and 15 February dates are close enough that a missed reminder can cost you both the admission and the funding.

Residence Permit

A scholarship does not replace a residence permit. If you are not an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen and you plan to study in Sweden for more than three months, you need a residence permit for higher education. Apply online through the Swedish Migration Agency after you have paid the tuition. The agency requires proof that the tuition has been paid before it assesses the application.

The maintenance requirement is the line that surprises applicants. You must show that you have funds for the whole period you are applying for, not just the first month. If you apply for a two-year permit, the agency may ask you to show support for 24 months. At the 2026 rate that is SEK 255,744, which is a substantial sum on top of tuition. The 2027 rate has not yet been published, so treat 10,656 as a planning figure and recheck the official page before you submit.

There is a useful overlap between the two requirements. The money you show for the residence permit can include a scholarship and your own savings, but it must be genuinely available to you and held in an account in your name. A bank statement that shows a balance for one day is not enough. The agency looks for funds that are at your disposal for the duration of your stay, and the statement must be issued no more than four months before the permit start date. Dalarna's residence permit page states that financial support from private individuals is not accepted, and the Migration Agency says sponsorship may not, in most cases, be a private person. A family member's account is therefore not a safe substitute for funds in your own name.

The rules that took effect on 11 June 2026 changed the work limit and the academic progress requirement. The current limit is 15 hours per week, and the credit thresholds are 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits after that. These rules affect your budget because part-time work is not a reliable substitute for the maintenance requirement. Plan your finances as if you will not work, and treat any job as a bonus rather than a core part of the plan.

For Pakistani Applicants

Many Pakistani applicants ask the same practical questions: can I get the scholarship, do I need IELTS, and how much money must I show? Here are the answers that follow from the official rules.

Dalarna's own awards are open to Pakistani citizens

Dalarna's scholarships do not have a nationality list. The test is fee status, degree level, first-choice ranking, the scholarship form, and admission. A Pakistani citizen who is admitted to a Dalarna master's programme as a fee-paying student and who meets the other conditions can receive the guaranteed SEK 5,000 award.

The SI scholarship is not open to Pakistani citizens

The Swedish Institute's Scholarship for Global Professionals is limited to citizens of 34 countries, and Pakistan is not on that list. If an agent tells you that you can get the SI scholarship as a Pakistani citizen, that is a warning sign. The SI list includes Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, and several other countries, but not Pakistan. Check the current list on the SI website before you pay anyone for "SI application help".

You will likely need IELTS or TOEFL

Pakistan is not on Dalarna's English waiver list. A medium-of-instruction letter from a Pakistani university is not accepted as proof of English proficiency. Plan for IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT at 90 with 20 in writing for tests taken before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with no section below 4 on the new scale for tests taken after that date. Book your test early enough to have the result before the document deadline.

Prepare your documents for translation and attestation

Your degree certificate and transcripts should be clear, complete, and consistent with the information in your passport. If your documents are in Urdu, follow the translation rules on UniversityAdmissions.se. Do not pay for attestation or a special stamp until you have confirmed that the destination requires it. The Pakistan-specific instructions on UniversityAdmissions.se are the place to check, and the requirements can change between intake cycles.

Show funds that the Migration Agency will accept

The residence permit requires proof of maintenance at SEK 10,656 per month for 2026 applications. For a two-year permit, that can mean showing support for 24 months. Bank statements should show a stable balance, not a temporary deposit, and the statement must be recent. Dalarna's guidance says the funds must be in an account in your name and that private sponsorship is not accepted. A scholarship award letter can be part of the evidence, but it does not remove the requirement to show that the full amount is available.

Apply early and avoid unnecessary agents

The application itself is designed to be completed online without an agent. You can create a UniversityAdmissions.se account, pay the SEK 900 fee through the portal's payment options, and upload your documents yourself. An agent can help with document checking, but no agent can guarantee admission or a scholarship. If someone asks for your passport original, a large upfront fee, or payment in crypto, stop and verify the request through the university's official email address.

For US Applicants

US citizens pay tuition in Sweden, so they can qualify for Dalarna's own awards. The main differences from the Pakistani case are the English waiver, the time zone, and the currency.

Dalarna's awards are open, but the SI award is not

The United States is not on the Swedish Institute's 34-country list. US citizens can apply for Dalarna's guaranteed award and the Academic Excellence Scholarship, but not for the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals. If your funding plan depends on SI, you need a different route.

Your US degree may waive the English test

Dalarna's waiver list includes one year of full-time study in the United States, provided the studies were taught and examined entirely in English. If you completed a US bachelor's degree, you may qualify for the waiver. Confirm this with the university before you book an IELTS or TOEFL test, and keep your transcripts and a programme description that shows the language of instruction.

Watch the 14 January evening deadline

The 15 January 2027 midnight CET deadline is 6:00 PM Eastern and 3:00 PM Pacific on 14 January. That is a working day for most applicants, so block the time in your calendar. Do not assume you have until the end of the 15th in your local time. The same logic applies to the 1 February document deadline and the 15 February scholarship form.

Currency and payment method

Tuition is billed in SEK. Your US bank may charge a foreign transaction fee and may apply its own exchange rate. Compare the total cost with your bank before you pay, and use a transfer service that gives you a clear SEK amount. Keep the receipt and a PDF of the invoice for your permit application and your tax records.

Check federal aid and tax rules yourself

This guide does not confirm whether Dalarna participates in US federal student aid programmes. Check the university's page and the US Department of Education's list before you assume you can use federal loans. For tax, keep your tuition invoices, scholarship letters, and permit documents. The US-Sweden tax treaty may affect how a scholarship is treated, so ask a qualified tax adviser rather than relying on a blog post.

For Other International Students

The rules depend on your citizenship and your fee status. The table below groups the main cases.

Funding options by applicant group
Applicant groupTuition statusDalarna awardsSI award
EU, EEA, and Swiss citizensNo tuitionNot applicable, because there is no tuition to waiveNot eligible, because SI requires fee-paying status
Pakistani citizensPay tuitionEligibleNot eligible
US citizensPay tuitionEligibleNot eligible
Citizens of the 34 SI countriesPay tuitionEligibleEligible, but the two cannot be combined
UK, Canadian, and Australian citizensPay tuitionEligibleNot on the 34-country list

If you are from one of the SI countries, you have a genuine choice between two routes. The SI award is larger and covers living costs, but it is competitive and limited to the countries on the list. Dalarna's award is smaller but predictable. You can apply for both, but if you receive SI, Dalarna will not apply its own scholarship. Read the SI terms carefully before you decide which award to rely on.

Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam also have access to the SI Pioneering Women in STEM initiative, which is aimed at female applicants. Dalarna lists four STEM programmes that fit the initiative: Business Intelligence, Data Science, Energy Efficient Built Environment, and Solar Energy Engineering. The initiative is separate from the main SI scholarship, and the eligibility rules are set by SI, so check the current call before you plan around it.

Applicants from India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka should note Dalarna's temporary English exemption for 2027. If you hold a four-year technical or science bachelor's degree, you may be able to meet the English requirement without IELTS or TOEFL. This is a local, time-limited concession, so confirm it for your programme and intake and keep the written confirmation.

Applicants from the countries on Dalarna's English waiver list, including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, may be able to skip the English test if their prior studies were taught and examined entirely in English. The waiver is not automatic, and the university may ask for evidence. Keep your transcripts and a programme description that states the language of instruction.

After You Receive an Offer

The offer is not the end of the process. Several time-sensitive tasks follow, and each one can affect your scholarship or your permit.

  • Accept the offer promptly. Follow the deadline in your offer letter. A late acceptance can lose your place, and without a place there is no scholarship.
  • Check the tuition invoice. Confirm that the SEK 5,000 waiver appears. If it does not, contact the university before you pay, and keep the email trail.
  • Pay tuition through the official channel. Keep the receipt and a PDF of the invoice. The Migration Agency will ask for proof of payment.
  • Apply for the residence permit early. The fee is SEK 1,500, and processing can take up to three months. Do not book a flight until the permit is approved.
  • Join the housing queue. Apply with Tunabyggen in Borlรƒ¤nge or Kopparstaden in Falun as soon as you accept. Student housing is allocated by queue time, not by need.
  • Plan for the Academic Excellence windows. The application periods are 1 to 15 February and 1 to 15 July. Set reminders for the first window after you start.
  • Register with the Swedish Tax Agency if you study for one year or more, and notify the Migration Agency of any address change within 30 days.
  • Keep every document. Store digital and printed copies of your admission letter, scholarship confirmation, tuition receipt, permit decision, and insurance policy.

If your permit is delayed, contact the university's international office before the semester starts. Dalarna can advise on late arrival, but it cannot override the Migration Agency's decision. Do not travel to Sweden before your permit is approved, because you may be refused entry at the border.

Common Mistakes

Most unsuccessful scholarship outcomes come from avoidable process errors rather than weak profiles. These are the ones applicants encounter most often.

  1. Ranking Dalarna second. The guaranteed award requires a first-choice ranking. A second-choice admission can still lead to a place, but not to the guarantee.
  2. Missing the 15 February form. The national portal does not submit Dalarna's form for you. Set a separate reminder.
  3. Assuming the award is full funding. SEK 5,000 is a small part of the tuition, and it does not cover living costs.
  4. Submitting a medium-of-instruction letter. Dalarna does not accept it as proof of English. Book IELTS or TOEFL instead.
  5. Paying an agent to "process" the scholarship. The form is free and is submitted directly to the university.
  6. Missing the 1 February document deadline. An incomplete file can lead to a late or negative admission decision.
  7. Budgeting with the 2026 permit figure. The 2027 maintenance requirement may be higher. Recheck it before you apply.
  8. Ignoring programme-specific items. A missing video statement or portfolio can sink an otherwise strong application.

There is also a subtler mistake: treating the scholarship page as the only source. Dalarna's scholarship page, fee page, programme pages, and FAQ do not always agree on every detail. When they conflict, ask the university in writing and keep the reply. A short email to study@du.se is worth more than a confident assumption.

Scam Warning Signs

Scholarship season attracts fraud. The patterns are predictable, and they usually target applicants who are anxious about deadlines or unfamiliar with Swedish systems.

  • "Guaranteed admission" or "guaranteed scholarship" for a fee. No agent can guarantee either. Dalarna's award depends on the university's own checks.
  • Requests to pay a "scholarship processing fee". Dalarna does not charge a fee for its scholarship form. The only official application fee is the UniversityAdmissions.se fee.
  • WhatsApp or Telegram agents asking for your passport original. Do not hand over original documents to an unverified person.
  • Fake domains that mimic the university. Check that the address ends in du.se, universityadmissions.se, or migrationsverket.se before you enter personal data.
  • Payment by gift card, crypto, or a personal account. Official fees are paid through official portals, not to individuals.
Verify before you pay. If an offer feels urgent, that is a reason to slow down. Open the official website in a new browser tab, find the contact address yourself, and ask the university to confirm the request. A legitimate office will not pressure you to pay within hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dalarna University master's scholarship fully funded?

No. Dalarna's own awards are partial tuition waivers. The Choose Dalarna First Scholarship reduces your first-semester tuition by SEK 5,000, and the Academic Excellence Scholarship reduces tuition by SEK 5,000 to SEK 15,000 per semester, with a programme distinction of SEK 10,000 to SEK 30,000 depending on your programme and grades. The Swedish Institute scholarship is fully funded, but it is a separate award with its own country list and deadline.

Who is eligible for the Dalarna University master's scholarships in 2027?

You must be liable to pay tuition fees, which means you are not a citizen of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. You must apply to a Dalarna master's programme, rank Dalarna first on UniversityAdmissions.se by 15 January 2027, submit Dalarna's scholarship form by 15 February 2027, and be admitted. Bachelor's programmes and standalone courses do not qualify.

What is the deadline for the Dalarna University master's scholarships 2027?

The programme application and ranking deadline is 15 January 2027 at midnight CET. The application fee and supporting documents are due by 1 February 2027. Dalarna's separate scholarship form is due by 15 February 2027. Admission results are published on 1 April 2027.

How much money does the Dalarna University scholarship pay?

The guaranteed Choose Dalarna First award is a SEK 5,000 tuition reduction in your first semester. The Academic Excellence Scholarship pays SEK 5,000 to SEK 15,000 per semester, plus a programme distinction of SEK 10,000 to SEK 30,000, and the maximum total ranges from SEK 20,000 to SEK 90,000 depending on the programme. The money is applied to tuition, not paid into your bank account.

Can Pakistani students apply for the Dalarna University scholarships?

Yes. Dalarna's two scholarships have no nationality list, so Pakistani citizens who pay tuition can receive them. The Swedish Institute scholarship is different: Pakistan is not on SI's 34-country list, so the SI route is not open to Pakistani citizens. Pakistani applicants should also plan for an IELTS or TOEFL score, because a medium-of-instruction letter is not accepted as proof.

Do I need a separate application for the Dalarna University scholarship?

Yes. Your UniversityAdmissions.se application does not submit the Dalarna scholarship form for you. You must complete Dalarna's own form by 15 February 2027, and you must rank a Dalarna master's programme first. Dalarna shows an on-screen confirmation after submission and does not send a confirmation email.

Final Words

Dalarna University's 2027 master's scholarships are best understood as a reliable discount, not a funding jackpot. The guaranteed SEK 5,000 award rewards applicants who follow the process precisely: first-choice ranking, a complete application by 15 January, documents and the fee by 1 February, and Dalarna's own form by 15 February. The Academic Excellence Scholarship can add meaningful support over time, but it depends on strong results after you start.

If you need full funding, the Swedish Institute route is the one to investigate, but only if your citizenship is on its 34-country list. Pakistani and US applicants should plan around Dalarna's partial awards and budget for the full cost of tuition and living. That is not a pessimistic view. It is the view that keeps you from building a financial plan on an award that was never designed to cover everything.

My advice is to treat the official pages as the source of truth and to ask the university in writing when two pages disagree. The process is manageable, the university is responsive, and the deadlines are fixed. Start early, keep your documents consistent, and do not pay anyone who promises a shortcut.

Syed Arbaz Ali Rizvi writes about international scholarships, admissions, and study destinations. He explains official rules in plain language and flags the points that applicants most often miss.

This guide was checked against Dalarna University, UniversityAdmissions.se, the Swedish Institute, and the Swedish Migration Agency on 24 October 2026. It is educational content, not legal or financial advice. Always confirm the current rules on the official websites before you pay a fee or submit an application.

Fact-check note. Verified on 24 October 2026 against Dalarna University's scholarship, tuition, entry-requirement, and programme pages; UniversityAdmissions.se's autumn semester dates and application-fee page; the Swedish Institute's SI Scholarship for Global Professionals page; the Swedish Migration Agency's higher-education page; and Dalarna's Guide for International Students 2026-28.

Known discrepancies. Dalarna's FAQ describes the Choose Dalarna First award as campus-based in one place while another answer says online master's students can receive Dalarna scholarships from 2026. Dalarna's page also says 33 SI countries while SI lists 34; this guide uses SI's 34. Scholarship announcement dates are inconsistent across Dalarna's pages, so this guide does not assert a publication date. Sustainable Organisational Development's tuition is not listed on the fee page reviewed. The residence-permit maintenance figure of SEK 10,656 is the 2026 amount; the 2027 figure was not published at the time of verification.
