This is partial funding, not a full ride. The award lowers your tuition bill, but you still pay for housing, insurance, the application fee, and a deposit. For many families, that is still a large saving, because the published 2027 tuition is RMB 88,000 a year.
I read WKU's current admissions pages and compared them with older WKU pages and third-party listings. This guide shows you who can apply, what the two award levels need, which documents to prepare, and how the deadline looks in Pakistan, the United States, and other time zones. It also has separate sections for Pakistani, US, and other international applicants.

On October 28, 2026, I read WKU's undergraduate scholarship page, the application materials checklist, the How to Apply page, and the NACES evaluation guide. I also compared them with older WKU pages and third-party listings. Older pages describe a different scheme (a first-year tuition reduction called Full and Half). I follow the current 2027 page where the two differ.
Overview
Wenzhou-Kean University is a Sino-American university in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. WKU says it follows customary US admissions practices, which is why its application asks for items like a personal statement and optional SAT or ACT scores.
You do not fill in a separate scholarship form. You apply for undergraduate admission, choose “Yes” in the scholarship intention section, and upload your supporting documents. WKU reviews the scholarship at the same time as your admission file and sends the result with the pre-admission notice.
WKU's international undergraduate programs sit in four colleges: Business and Public Management; Science, Mathematics and Technology; Liberal Arts; and Michael Graves College (design and architecture). Majors and entry rules differ by program, so confirm your intended major on WKU's undergraduate programs page before you apply.
Who Can Apply
Eligibility is about who you are and what you submit. It is separate from how WKU picks recipients, which I cover in the next section.
Basic eligibility rules
- You are a newly admitted international undergraduate student.
- You are entering for Fall 2027 as a first-year student, not as a transfer student.
- You apply through the WKU application system and choose “Yes” for the scholarship.
- You meet at least one published benchmark for the First-Class or Second-Class level.
- You submit everything by June 15, 2027.
Scholarship benchmarks
Meeting any one benchmark can put you in line for that level. You do not need to meet all of them.
| Qualification | First-Class (60% off) | Second-Class (30% off) |
|---|---|---|
| High school GPA | 3.5 or higher out of 4.0 | 3.0 or higher out of 4.0 |
| SAT | 1300 or higher | 1250 or higher |
| ACT | 27 or higher | 25 or higher |
| AP | 4, 4, and 5 or above in three subjects | 4, 4, and 4 or above in three subjects |
| A-Level | AAB in three subjects | ABB in three subjects |
| IB | Total of 32 or higher | Total of 30 or higher |
| UEC | Five-subject total of 25 or lower | Five-subject total of 28 or lower |
| English proficiency | TOEFL iBT 98 (or 5.0 on the 1 to 6 scale), IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 130 | TOEFL iBT 87 (or 4.5 on the 1 to 6 scale), IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 120 |
For UEC, the five subjects must include Chinese, English, Mathematics, and two subjects related to your major.
Rules that catch people out
- If your native language is English, you cannot use an English test score to claim the scholarship.
- If you use the GPA route, you need a NACES-evaluated course-by-course transcript evaluation that includes your GPA. US credentials are exempt.
- Meeting a benchmark does not guarantee the award unless you also meet every other scholarship requirement.
How Winners Are Selected
WKU does not publish an award count, a scoring rubric, or a success rate in the pages I reviewed, so I will not guess at one. What the pages do confirm is the order of events.
- WKU reviews your scholarship request at the same time as your undergraduate admission file.
- Only applicants who are admitted can receive the award.
- The scholarship result is issued together with the pre-admission notice.
- WKU does not say how it treats applicants who meet both the First-Class and Second-Class benchmarks. Upload clear proof for the stronger benchmark and ask admissions if you are unsure.
Your admission file therefore carries real weight. A strong, complete application helps both your admission and your scholarship result.
Funding and Benefits
The award is a tuition reduction. It does not pay living costs, flights, or fees outside tuition. WKU says the application fee and deposit are required from all students, including scholarship recipients.
The two award levels
| Award | Tuition reduction | Reduction per year (my calculation) | Tuition left per year (my calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class | 60% | RMB 52,800 | RMB 35,200 |
| Second-Class | 30% | RMB 26,400 | RMB 61,600 |
The percentages and the RMB 88,000 tuition figure come from WKU. The yearly amounts are my own arithmetic from those two numbers, so treat them as a planning aid and not an official quote.
Renewal
Both awards can renew each year for up to four years if you meet the renewal requirements. WKU says those requirements will appear in your scholarship award notice, so read that document closely when it arrives.
Required Documents
WKU lists six required uploads for the international undergraduate application. Prepare them early, because a certificate or evaluation can take longer than you expect.
The six core uploads
Passport identification page
A clear, full-color copy. Your passport must stay valid until at least August 15, 2030 for Fall 2027 applicants.
Color ID photograph
JPG, JPEG, or PNG, up to 200 KB, at least 295 by 413 pixels. My JPG compressor can help you reach the size limit.
Academic transcript
Every course and grade. If you are still studying, send the latest transcript available.
Proof of graduation
A diploma if you have graduated. Otherwise, a pre-graduation certificate or school letter that states your expected graduation date.
Personal statement
About 800 words in your own voice. Use my motivation letter word counter to check length.
Certificate of no criminal record
Issued by the competent authority in your country, generally within six months before you apply.
Documents that apply only to some applicants
- NACES evaluation: required if you use the GPA route (US credentials are exempt).
- Guardianship documents: required if you will be under 18 on August 15, 2027. You need a legal guardian in China.
- Portfolio: required for Architecture and Design programs, uploaded as one PDF.
- Certified English translations: required for any document that is not originally in English.
Test scores are optional for 2027
WKU is test-optional for the 2027 cycle. You may submit SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, IB, or UEC results if they show your preparation well. If you plan to claim the scholarship through one of those tests, you must submit that score. SAT, ACT, and AP scores must be final at the time you apply.
English Language Requirements
Admission and the scholarship use English in two different ways. For admission, non-native English speakers must show one accepted test or an approved waiver. For the scholarship, an English test is only one of several benchmarks, as the table in the eligibility section shows.
Accepted tests for admission
| Test | Minimum score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 79 (paper-based: 550). TOEFL tests taken after January 21, 2026 need a total of at least 4.0 on the new scale. |
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 105. Send your report through the Duolingo dashboard to Wenzhou-Kean University, International Undergraduate Admissions. |
Your score must come from a test taken within the past two years. If you are weighing IELTS bands, try my IELTS band score calculator.
Waiver options
You can request a waiver by meeting one of the paths below. The admissions office makes the final decision, so meeting a minimum does not guarantee approval.
- English-medium schooling: official documents showing you completed secondary school where English was the language of instruction.
- College English: at least two college-level English Composition courses at an accredited US institution, each with a B or higher.
- Qualifying scores: SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 650 or more; ACT English of 26 or more; A-Level English grade C or higher; AP English Language or Literature score of 4 or higher; IB English A or B (Higher Level) score of 5 or higher; or UEC English grade B3 or better, subject to department rules.
Applicants to fully online programs cannot receive an English waiver.
Test minimums and waiver rules can change, and some programs add their own rules. Open WKU's official application materials page the day you submit and confirm that your test, score, and test date still qualify.
Costs
WKU charges tuition and fees in RMB (Chinese yuan). I list the official RMB amounts first. I do not give dollar or rupee figures because exchange rates change daily, so use a live converter on the day you pay.
| Cost item | Official amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | RMB 88,000 per academic year | 2027 academic year. The scholarship reduces this amount. |
| Accommodation | RMB 8,000 to 10,000 per academic year | Based on 10 months a year. |
| Insurance | RMB 1,000 per year | Annual fee. |
| Application fee | RMB 400 | Payable only upon admission. Required of all students. |
| Deposit | RMB 20,000 | Non-refundable, but applied toward tuition when you enroll. Required of all students. |
As a rough example, a First-Class recipient would owe RMB 35,200 in tuition, plus housing and insurance, for a year. That is my arithmetic from WKU's published figures, and it leaves out food, travel, books, and personal spending, which WKU's pages did not list.
Application Procedure
The flowchart shows the route from eligibility check to scholarship result. The numbered steps below it add the detail.
Confirm you are a new international freshman, then pick the benchmark you can prove: GPA, SAT, ACT, AP, A-Level, IB, UEC, or an English test. My CGPA calculator can help you convert grades while you plan.
Order the criminal record certificate and book a NACES evaluation first if you need them, since both depend on outside offices. Scan everything clearly and keep names spelled the same on every file.
Register in the International Student Application System, fill in each section, and upload your files. Choose “Yes” in the scholarship intention section.
WKU sends official updates through the application system, so log in regularly. Add the date to my scholarship deadline tracker so you do not lose it.
Deadlines and Time Zones
The official deadline is June 15, 2027, for the Fall 2027 intake. The pages I reviewed do not name a time zone or a closing hour, and I will not invent one.
June 15, 2027 for the Fall 2027 intake. Submit well before this date and confirm the exact cutoff time with WKU admissions.
Process timeline
The timeline lists only steps that WKU's pages confirm. WKU does not publish a date for the pre-admission notice in the pages I read.
Time zone conversion
Wenzhou uses China Standard Time (UTC+8). The table below is a planning example that assumes the portal closes at 11:59 PM China time on June 15, 2027. WKU has not confirmed that hour, so treat it as a safety margin and not as an official cutoff. In June, the US observes daylight saving time.
| Time zone | Local time (planning example) |
|---|---|
| China Standard Time (Wenzhou) | 11:59 PM, June 15, 2027 |
| Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) | 8:59 PM, June 15, 2027 |
| Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) | 3:59 PM, June 15, 2027 |
| Eastern Time (ET) | 11:59 AM, June 15, 2027 |
| Pacific Time (PT) | 8:59 AM, June 15, 2027 |
My advice is simple: aim to submit at least a week early, and certainly before the morning of June 15 in your own time zone. That keeps you safe even if the real cutoff is earlier than this example.
Residence Permit or Visa
The WKU pages I reviewed do not explain the visa or residence permit steps for admitted students, so I will not describe a process I could not confirm. Ask the admissions office directly and follow the guidance of the Chinese embassy or consulate that serves your country.
Two details from WKU's checklist do affect your travel documents. Your passport must stay valid until at least August 15, 2030, and applicants under 18 on August 15, 2027 need a legal guardian in China with guardianship documents. Hold off on buying flights until you have your offer and clear visa guidance in writing.
For Pakistani Applicants
Pakistan Standard Time is three hours behind China, so a deadline that ends late in the evening in Wenzhou ends in the afternoon in Pakistan. Plan around your own clock, not the portal's.
Pick your benchmark and prepare the evidence
- O-Level and A-Level students: the A-Level route (AAB for First-Class, ABB for Second-Class in three subjects) uses grades you may already hold.
- Matric and FSc (or equivalent) students: the GPA route needs a NACES course-by-course evaluation that includes your GPA. WKU names World Education Services (WES), Global Credential Evaluators, Educational Credentials Evaluators (ECE), and Josef Silny and Associates as approved vendors.
- English test route: IELTS 7.0 or 6.5, TOEFL, or Duolingo can qualify you if you are not a native English speaker.
Start the evaluation early, because it depends on outside processing time that WKU does not control. You can estimate your grade conversion with my CGPA calculator, but only the evaluation agency's result counts.
Pakistan-specific checks
- Passport expiry: check the date now. It must run to at least August 15, 2030.
- Criminal record certificate: WKU asks for one from the competent authority in your country. I could not confirm which Pakistani office WKU prefers, so email admissions before you pay for one.
- Translations: any document that is not in English needs a certified English translation.
- English-medium school letter: if you studied in English, ask your school early for the official documentation WKU needs for a waiver.
For US Applicants
If you attended a US high school, your path is the simplest of any group. US credentials are exempt from the NACES evaluation, and your GPA, SAT, ACT, and AP results already match WKU's benchmarks.
What helps you most
- GPA route: 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for First-Class or 3.0 for Second-Class, with no outside evaluation.
- Test route: SAT 1300 or 1250, ACT 27 or 25, or the AP combinations in the benchmark table. WKU is test-optional, but you must submit a score if you want to claim the scholarship through it.
- English: as a native English speaker, you cannot claim the scholarship with an English test score, and your admission proof comes from your schooling or qualifying scores. An SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 650 or an ACT English score of 26 is among the listed waiver paths, subject to approval.
Practical notes for US applicants
Fees are in RMB, so use a live exchange rate on the day you pay the RMB 20,000 deposit. For deadline planning, the example in the time zone table shows 11:59 AM Eastern Time or 8:59 AM Pacific Time on June 15, 2027. That is a planning example only, so submit early.
I did not research whether US federal student aid applies to study at WKU. Ask the WKU admissions office and your own financial aid office before you count on it.
For Other International Applicants
The scholarship is open to newly admitted international undergraduate students, and the pages I reviewed show no country list. Your best route depends on the credential you finished school with.
Match your credential to a benchmark
- IB students: a total of 32 for First-Class or 30 for Second-Class.
- A-Level students: AAB or ABB in three subjects.
- UEC students: a five-subject total of 25 or lower, or 28 or lower, counting Chinese, English, Mathematics, and two major-related subjects.
- National diploma holders: use the GPA route with a NACES evaluation, or an accepted English test if English is not your native language.
Checks that apply to everyone outside the US
- Get a certificate of no criminal record from the competent authority in your country, issued within about six months of applying.
- Have certified English translations ready for any document that is not in English.
- If you studied in English, collect the official school documentation that supports a waiver request.
- If you apply to a fully online program, plan to submit an English test, because waivers do not apply.
Check your own time zone against the table above, then add the date to my scholarship deadline tracker.
After You Receive an Offer
Your scholarship result arrives with the pre-admission notice in the application portal. WKU says it will not send separate emails about progress, so keep checking the portal.
- Pay the RMB 400 application fee when you are admitted, if you have not already.
- Plan for the RMB 20,000 deposit. It is non-refundable but counts toward tuition when you enroll.
- Read the award notice for the renewal requirements, since they decide whether you keep the scholarship each year.
- If you applied with a pre-graduation certificate, submit your final graduation certificate before enrollment.
- Keep copies of every notice, receipt, and message for your visa file.
Common Mistakes
These errors are easy to avoid if you plan early.
Document mistakes
- Short passport validity: a passport that expires before August 15, 2030 must be renewed before you submit.
- Old certificates: a criminal record certificate older than about six months may be rejected.
- Name mismatches: keep your name spelled the same on your passport, transcript, and test report.
Scholarship mistakes
- Skipping the “Yes” box: the scholarship intention section is how WKU knows you want to be considered.
- Using an English test as a native speaker: native English speakers cannot claim the scholarship through test scores.
- Missing the GPA evaluation: the GPA route needs a NACES evaluation, unless your credentials are from the US.
- Assuming a full ride: the award is partial, and fees and housing remain yours to pay.
Scam Warning Signs
Scholarship fraud grows around popular programs. Watch for these signs.
- Guaranteed results: no one can promise admission or a scholarship in advance.
- Payment to a private person: WKU's listed fees are the application fee and the deposit, so ask WKU to confirm any other payment request in writing.
- Pressure to act today: real deadlines are published, and urgency from a stranger is a red flag.
- Unofficial contacts: a free email address or a chat account that does not match WKU's official contact details is a warning sign.
How to Apply Safely
Use only WKU's own channels. Start from the official WKU admissions website, apply through the International Student Application System, and use the contact details WKU publishes: globaladmissions@wku.edu.cn or +86 (0)577-5587-0333.
Important: Never send your passport scan, bank details, or a fee to someone you have not verified. If you are unsure, ask WKU admissions to confirm the request through the portal or their official email.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Wenzhou-Kean University scholarship deadline for 2027?
The deadline is June 15, 2027, for the Fall 2027 intake. The official pages I reviewed do not state a time zone, so submit well before that date and confirm the cutoff with the admissions office.
How much tuition does the Wenzhou-Kean University freshmen scholarship cover?
The First-Class Scholarship reduces tuition by 60% and the Second-Class Scholarship reduces it by 30%. Based on the published 2027 tuition of RMB 88,000, that equals RMB 52,800 and RMB 26,400 per year.
Is the Wenzhou-Kean University scholarship fully funded?
No. It is partial funding that reduces tuition only. The application fee and the RMB 20,000 deposit are still required, and accommodation and insurance are separate costs.
Do I need an English test to qualify for the scholarship?
Not always. You can qualify through any one benchmark, such as high school GPA, SAT, ACT, AP, A-Level, IB, or UEC. Applicants whose native language is English cannot use English test scores for the scholarship, and admission still requires English proof unless a waiver is approved.
Can transfer students apply for the freshmen scholarship?
No. The freshmen scholarship is only for newly admitted international undergraduate students, and transfer students are not eligible.
Is the Wenzhou-Kean University scholarship renewable?
Yes. It can be renewed each year for up to four years if you meet the renewal requirements, which WKU says will be listed in the scholarship award notice.
Can Pakistani students apply for this scholarship?
The scholarship is open to newly admitted international undergraduate students, and the sections I reviewed list no country-based exclusion. Pakistani applicants should confirm their status with WKU admissions and plan time for a NACES credential evaluation if they use the GPA route.
Final Words
The Wenzhou-Kean University scholarship 2027 is a strong tuition discount if you can meet one clear benchmark, and its renewal for up to four years adds real long-term value. It is not a full ride, so budget for housing, insurance, the application fee, and the deposit before you commit.
Three habits will serve you best. Confirm every detail on WKU's official pages, build your file early so documents and evaluations are not the bottleneck, and submit well before June 15, 2027. If you want help with your essay, start with my guide on how to write a winning motivation letter.
