This award is for students who want to start at Harvey Mudd as first-year undergraduates. It is not a graduate scholarship, and you cannot apply for it on its own. Your admission file is the application, so the real work is a strong Harvey Mudd application that arrives on time.
I wrote this guide for three groups of readers: Pakistani students, students in the United States, and applicants from every other country. Each group gets its own section, with details such as time zones, document checks, and money questions that the official page leaves out. I reviewed the official Harvey Mudd pages on October 28, 2026, and I clearly mark anything I could not confirm.

Esterbrook Merit Award Overview
Harvey Mudd College is a STEM-focused college in Claremont, California, and a member of The Claremont Colleges. The Esterbrook Merit Award is one of several merit scholarships listed on its official site. According to the college, the award comes from gifts by the Mildred E. and Harvey S. Mudd Foundation and the Caryll Mudd and Norman F. Sprague Jr. Foundation.
The college describes the award as recognition for an exceptionally talented student in the incoming first-year class. The same page says it was formerly the Sprague-Connolly Merit Award, so older forum threads may use that name.
I label this scholarship Partial Funding on purpose. Harvey Mudd lists the 2026-2027 cost of attendance at $104,512 for a student living on campus. A $25,000 award covers a meaningful part of that bill, but not all of it.
On October 28, 2026, I read the official Esterbrook Merit Award page, the first-year and international applicant pages, the Regular Decision financial aid page for international applicants, and the cost of attendance page. I did not copy their wording. Where the pages were silent, such as on selection criteria, I say so instead of guessing.
Degree Level Covered
The award is for undergraduate study. Harvey Mudd ties it to incoming first-year students, so it does not cover Master's, PhD, or postdoctoral study. The page does not mention transfer students, so I would not count on it if you plan to transfer in.
Subjects and Departments
The award page does not limit the scholarship to one major. Your studies will sit inside one of the college departments or interdisciplinary centers below, taken from the college's Academics menu. Check the official Majors page for the current list of majors.
| Department or Center | Type, as listed by Harvey Mudd |
|---|---|
| Biology | Department |
| Chemistry | Department |
| Computer Science | Department |
| Engineering | Department |
| Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts | Department |
| Mathematics | Department |
| Physics | Department |
| Hixon Center for Climate and the Environment | Interdisciplinary center |
| Center for Design Education | Interdisciplinary center |
| Hixon-Riggs Program for Responsive Science and Engineering | Interdisciplinary center |
Who Can Apply
This section covers eligibility only. How the college chooses among eligible students is a separate question, and I answer it in the next section.
Core Eligibility
- You apply for first-year admission to Harvey Mudd College.
- You submit a complete application by the Early Decision or Regular Decision deadline.
- You plan to study full time, because renewal depends on eight consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment.
- You can meet the enrollment requirements of one year each of high school calculus, chemistry, and physics. If you cannot finish them before graduation, the college may offer conditional admission and ask for a one-semester college course with a grade of B or better.
Eligible Nationalities
The official page says every first-year applicant is considered, including students who do not apply for financial aid. Harvey Mudd treats anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident as an international applicant, and international applicants follow the same steps as domestic first-year applicants. So students from all countries can be considered. The page does not name international students specifically, so email admission@hmc.edu if you want that confirmed in writing.
Renewal Conditions
- The award renews automatically at the end of your first year.
- Later renewal depends on Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at the end of your second and third years.
- Eight consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment are required, with exceptions for study abroad or an approved leave of absence.
Note: Meeting these conditions makes you eligible to be considered. It does not guarantee the award.
How Winners Are Selected
Harvey Mudd does not publish a scoring rubric, a number of recipients, or the names of the people who decide. The only public statement is that the award recognizes an exceptionally talented student in the incoming class and that no separate application is needed. Because selection details are unconfirmed, I will not invent them.
What the College Collects
Harvey Mudd lists the materials below for first-year applicants. They are the only places where your strengths can show up, so each one matters.
- A personal essay in the Common Application.
- Two additional writing responses: one up to 500 words and one up to 250 words.
- Two teacher recommendations, one from a STEM teacher and one from a humanities, social sciences, or arts teacher.
- Your official high school transcript and a School Report from your counselor.
- Optional extras: an admission interview and a counselor recommendation when available.
How I Would Strengthen the File
These points are my own reading of the official prompts, not an official scoring guide.
- Connect your story to real problems. The longer prompt asks how an experience or community shaped the problems you want to solve. Pick one specific experience and follow it through.
- Be honest about asking for help. The shorter prompt asks about a time you reached out. A real moment with a clear lesson beats a polished general statement.
- Choose recommenders who watched you grow. A teacher who saw you struggle and recover can write a more useful letter than one who only saw your grades.
- Respect the word limits. The motivation letter word counter is handy for checking your drafts, and my guide on how to write a winning motivation letter covers clear personal writing.
Funding and Benefits
The published benefit is simple: a merit award with a fixed yearly amount that renews if you meet the conditions.
$25,000 per year
Listed for students enrolling for the first time in Fall 2026.
Automatic after year one
Later years depend on Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Up to four years
Tied to eight consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment.
Two foundations
The Mudd Foundation and the Caryll Mudd and Norman F. Sprague Jr. Foundation.
If the award renews every year, the face value across four years would be $100,000. That figure is my own multiplication of the published amount, not a number stated by Harvey Mudd.
What the official page does not say: whether the award combines with need-based aid, whether it can be used for anything beyond the college bill, and whether the amount changes for Fall 2027. Ask the Office of Financial Aid before you rely on any of these.
Important: Benefits can change between cycles. Confirm each item on the official page before you plan your budget.
Required Documents
These documents come from the first-year and international applicant pages. Everyone submits the first six items. International applicants add the items in the second list.
Common Application and School Report
The School Report is submitted by your counselor.
Two teacher recommendations
One from a STEM teacher and one from a humanities, social sciences, or arts teacher.
Official transcripts
High school transcript, plus a college transcript if applicable. Ungraded enrichment courses are not required.
Essays
A personal essay, one additional essay, and one short answer response.
Application fee
$70, or a fee waiver for students who show financial need.
Interview and test scores
An interview is optional, and the college is test-optional for Fall 2027.
Extra Items for International Applicants
- Required: English translations of any credentials that are not in English.
- Required: proof of English proficiency, unless your school qualifies for a waiver.
- Recommended: a profile of your secondary school, covering its grading scale, course structure, and academic rigor.
- Only if you apply for aid: the financial documents listed in the Costs and Application Procedure sections.
English Language Requirements
International applicants must prove English proficiency. You can choose any one of the options below.
| Accepted Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| Duolingo English Test (160-point version only) | 130 |
| TOEFL iBT (Home Edition or Paper Edition) | 100 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.5 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 190 |
| Cambridge C2 Proficiency | 200 |
You can self-report your score on the application or in the HMC Applicant Hub, or request an official score report. Only admitted students who choose to enroll must send official score reports. If you took IELTS and only have section scores, the IELTS band score calculator helps you check your overall band.
English Waiver
Harvey Mudd waives the requirement if the school you attend uses English as its primary language of instruction. The college can grant this waiver only after you submit your application, so do not wait for it before you apply.
Accepted tests and minimum scores can change between cycles. Open the official International Applicants page right before you submit and compare it with the table above.
Costs
Here is the 2026-2027 cost of attendance from the official page. Most students do not pay the full amount, because need-based aid and merit scholarships reduce it.
| Item | On Campus | Off Campus | Off Campus with Family |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $76,879 | $76,879 | $76,879 |
| Student body fee | $401 | $401 | $401 |
| Housing | $13,293 | $7,546 | Not listed |
| Food | $11,489 | $3,636 | $4,063 (housing and food) |
| Personal expenses | $1,400 | $1,400 | $1,400 |
| Books and supplies | $800 | $800 | $800 |
| Orientation fee (fall only) | $250 | $250 | $250 |
| Transportation | Varies | Varies | Not listed |
| Total cost of attendance | $104,512 | $90,912 | $83,793 |
My own arithmetic shows that $25,000 equals about 24 percent of the on-campus total. That is a large share, but the remaining balance is still significant, so plan for it early. The application fee is $70. I could not verify the cost of test registration, transcript delivery, or the CSS Profile, so check those with each provider.
Application Procedure
The flowchart below shows the route from your first check to your decision. Follow the steps in order, and confirm each rule on the official page before you move on.
Decide between Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision. Early Decision is binding, and about 40 percent of the first-year class enters through it, according to the college.
Ask your two teachers early, request transcripts, and draft the essays. Tell your counselor which deadline you chose.
International applicants should choose a test, or plan for the waiver after submission. The Costs and English sections above list the scores.
Pay the $70 fee or request a fee waiver. November 15, 2026 is a Sunday, so I would aim to submit by Friday, November 13.
For Regular Decision international applicants, the CSS Profile (code 4341) is due February 1, 2027, and the IDOC documents are due February 15, 2027. I did not review the Early Decision aid pages, so check those separately.
Esterbrook Merit Award consideration is automatic. Track your application in the HMC Applicant Hub after you submit.
Deadlines and Time Zones
The timeline below shows every date I confirmed. I have not added a countdown, because the official pages are the only place to check your exact cutoff.
| Milestone | Date | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I | November 15, 2026 (Sunday) | First-year applicants choosing Early Decision I |
| Early Decision II | January 5, 2027 (Tuesday) | First-year applicants choosing Early Decision II |
| Regular Decision | January 5, 2027 (Tuesday) | First-year applicants choosing Regular Decision |
| CSS Profile | February 1, 2027 | Regular Decision international applicants who want aid |
| IDOC documents | February 15, 2027 | Regular Decision international applicants who want aid |
Early Decision I closes on November 15, 2026. Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on January 5, 2027. The official pages I reviewed do not give a clock time or a time zone, so confirm the cutoff in your Common Application account. You can also note both dates in the scholarship deadline tracker.
Time Zone Conversion (Example Only)
Because the cutoff time is unconfirmed, the table below is an example. It assumes a cutoff of 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Daylight saving time ended on November 1, 2026, so Pacific Time is UTC-8 on both dates.
| Time Zone | November 15, 2026 Cutoff | January 5, 2027 Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Pacific Time (PT) | 11:59 PM, Nov 15 | 11:59 PM, Jan 5 |
| Eastern Time (ET) | 2:59 AM, Nov 16 | 2:59 AM, Jan 6 |
| Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) | 7:59 AM, Nov 16 | 7:59 AM, Jan 6 |
| Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) | 12:59 PM, Nov 16 | 12:59 PM, Jan 6 |
Visa Process
The Harvey Mudd pages I reviewed do not explain visa steps, so this section describes the general US process for international students. Confirm every detail with the college and the US embassy or consulate in your country. The Esterbrook Merit Award does not guarantee a visa, and the visa officer makes the final decision.
- Admitted international students who enroll usually need an F-1 student visa.
- The college issues a Form I-20 after you accept your offer and provide the financial information it asks for.
- You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the visa application, and book an interview.
- Bring your passport, I-20, proof of funds, and any other documents the embassy lists.
For Pakistani Applicants
Pakistani students form a core part of my audience, so here are the points that matter most for you.
Documents and Grades
Matric, FSc, O Level, and A Level documents are usually issued in English, so translation may not be needed. If any document is in Urdu, you must supply an English translation. Check your own grade arithmetic with the CGPA calculator before you type any number into a form.
Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics
Harvey Mudd expects one year each of calculus, chemistry, and physics before enrollment. Programs such as FSc Pre-Engineering or A Level science subjects often cover these topics, but I could not confirm which of your courses count. Ask admission@hmc.edu and keep your syllabus ready.
Counselors, English, and Time
- Many Pakistani schools have no formal counselor. Email the admission office early and ask who should submit your School Report.
- If your school taught in English, ask whether the waiver applies. It can be granted only after you submit your application.
- An 11:59 PM Pacific cutoff would be 12:59 PM in Pakistan the next day. Submit in the Pakistani daytime to avoid late-night errors.
Money Planning
Aid for international students is limited, and your level of need may affect admission chances. If you apply for aid, start collecting a signed foreign tax return with English translation, plus bank statements ending December 31, 2026. If your family has no tax return, ask the Office of Financial Aid what substitute it accepts.
For US Applicants
If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, you apply as a domestic first-year applicant. The process differs from the international route in a few useful ways.
Testing Plan
Harvey Mudd is test-optional for students applying for Fall 2027. It plans to require standardized tests again for the Fall 2028 application cycle. If you are a junior planning to apply next year, start test preparation now.
Early Decision Strategy
- Early Decision has two rounds, with the same rules and different deadlines.
- You can have only one Early Decision application active at a time.
- If Harvey Mudd denies you in either Early Decision round, you cannot apply Regular Decision in the same year.
Fee Waivers and Aid
Harvey Mudd honors fee waivers requested through the Common Application, and also waivers from the ACT, College Board, and NACAC. The Esterbrook Merit Award does not require an aid application. If you want need-based aid as well, follow the separate instructions on the college's need-based aid pages.
Other Merit Awards
The college lists several other merit awards on its official menu: the President's Scholars Program, the Harvey S. Mudd Merit Award, the National Merit Scholarship, the FIRST Robotics Scholarship, the RIF Scholarship, and the VEX Scholarship. I reviewed only the Esterbrook page in detail, so read each of the others before you assume anything about them.
For Other International Applicants
If you are outside Pakistan and the United States, these points matter most. They apply whether you are in South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, or elsewhere.
Decide About Aid Early
Harvey Mudd says it offers financial aid to only a small number of admitted international students. It meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for a handful of them, and your level of need may affect your chances for admission. International students are not eligible for federal financial support, and a student who enters without aid cannot apply for aid in later years.
Good to know: Esterbrook Merit Award consideration is separate from aid. The official page says every first-year applicant is considered, including those who do not apply for financial aid.
Paper Option for the CSS Profile
If your home country prohibits you from filing the online CSS Profile, the college lets you submit its International Student Application for Financial Assistance directly to the Office of Financial Aid instead.
Time Zone Examples
These examples use the same assumed cutoff of 11:59 PM Pacific Time on January 5, 2027. The real cutoff is unconfirmed.
| Region | Local Time When It Is 11:59 PM PT on Jan 5 |
|---|---|
| India (UTC+5:30) | 1:29 PM, Jan 6 |
| Bangladesh (UTC+6) | 1:59 PM, Jan 6 |
| United Arab Emirates (UTC+4) | 11:59 AM, Jan 6 |
| Nigeria (UTC+1) | 8:59 AM, Jan 6 |
| Singapore (UTC+8) | 3:59 PM, Jan 6 |
Grade Scales and School Profiles
The college recommends a school profile that explains your grading scale and course system. If your education system is unusual, such as a national exam track, this profile helps the readers place your results in context. Write to admission@hmc.edu with any country-specific question before the deadline, not after.
After You Receive an Offer
Accepting and Enrolling
- If you were admitted through Early Decision, withdraw your other applications and do not start new ones.
- Use the HMC Applicant Hub, which the college provides for applicants and admitted students.
- International students who choose to enroll submit official English score reports.
- If your admission is conditional on calculus, chemistry, or physics, finish the required course with a B or better.
Keeping the Award
- Stay in full-time enrollment unless you have approved study abroad or leave.
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress at the end of your second and third years.
- Ask the Office of Financial Aid how the award appears in your offer and how it interacts with any need-based aid.
Common Mistakes
Application Mistakes
- Looking for a separate Esterbrook application form. None exists.
- Choosing Early Decision without understanding that it is binding.
- Waiting until deadline day to submit.
Document Mistakes
- Leaving untranslated documents in the file.
- Asking teachers for recommendations too late.
- Assuming the English waiver is automatic. You must request it after you submit.
Money Mistakes
- Treating $25,000 as full funding.
- Applying for aid without realizing that it can affect international admission chances.
- Starting aid documents after the deadline is already close.
Scam Warning Signs
Because there is no separate Esterbrook application, any person selling one deserves suspicion.
- Guaranteed award: no one can promise this scholarship.
- Fees to unlock the award: the college lists no such fee, apart from the normal application fee.
- Requests for sensitive data by email: Harvey Mudd tells applicants not to send personal identifiable information by email.
- Unofficial domains: the college site uses hmc.edu.
- False urgency: pressure to pay today is a red flag.
How to Apply Safely
Use only the Common Application and the official HMC pages, and keep copies of everything you submit.
Important: If the college asks for documents, use its secure document upload service or the College Board IDOC service, not regular email. Never pay a private agent to secure this award.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Esterbrook Merit Award open to international students?
The official page says every first-year applicant is considered, and international students apply as first-year applicants, so students from all countries can be considered. The page does not name international students specifically, so confirm in writing with admission@hmc.edu if you need certainty.
Do I need a separate application for the Esterbrook Merit Award?
No. Harvey Mudd states that no separate application is required and that every first-year applicant is considered, including students who do not apply for financial aid.
How much is the Esterbrook Merit Award worth?
The official page lists $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, for students enrolling for the first time in Fall 2026. I could not find separate Fall 2027 terms on October 28, 2026, so confirm the amount with the admission office.
What are the Harvey Mudd application deadlines for the Fall 2027 class?
Early Decision I is November 15, 2026. Early Decision II and Regular Decision are January 5, 2027. The official pages I reviewed do not state a clock time or time zone, so check your Common Application account.
Do international applicants need an English test?
Yes, unless the waiver applies. Accepted options are Duolingo 130, TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS Academic 7.5, or Cambridge 190 (C1) or 200 (C2). Schools that teach primarily in English can qualify for a waiver, which the college grants only after you submit your application.
Can I apply to Harvey Mudd without an agent?
Yes. The official route is the Common Application, with a $70 application fee or a fee waiver. The college does not list any agent requirement, so never pay someone to secure this award.
Final Words
Three actions matter most. First, confirm the current terms on the official Harvey Mudd page, because the published award text refers to Fall 2026. Second, submit a complete application early, with the English proof and documents your situation requires. Third, treat every claim about guaranteed scholarships as a warning sign.
The Esterbrook Merit Award rewards a strong overall application, not a separate form. If you have a question that this guide does not answer, ask it in the comments, and I will check it against the official pages.
