Direct answer: The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) accepts 2027 master’s and PhD applications from non-Chinese citizens between November 1, 2026, and June 15, 2027, but each scholarship route has its own window. The Chinese Government Scholarship (High-Level Postgraduate Program) closes March 10, 2027, and the USTB Dingxin Scholarship closes April 30, 2027. The Chinese Government route covers tuition, housing, insurance, and a monthly allowance. You apply at onlineapply.ustb.edu.cn and pay a non-refundable CNY 600 fee. USTB does not state a closing time or time zone, so submit early.

Which USTB Scholarship Route Fits You
USTB lists several ways to fund a master’s or PhD. They differ in where you apply, when they close, how old you can be, and what they pay. Choosing the wrong one is the most common way to lose a year, so compare them first.
| Route | Apply through | Window | Age and language | Funding described by USTB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese Government Scholarship, Type A (country bilateral) | Your home country’s study-abroad dispatching authority or the Chinese embassy or consulate, plus the CSC online system; list USTB as first choice | Generally November to March, but it varies by country | Set by your country’s call | CSC award terms, full or partial |
| Chinese Government Scholarship, Type B (High-Level Postgraduate Program) | Directly to USTB at onlineapply.ustb.edu.cn, plus CSC registration (institution code 10008) | November 1, 2026 to March 10, 2027 | Master’s under 35, doctoral under 40; HSK 4 minimum for Chinese-taught programs | Tuition, accommodation, medical insurance, and a living allowance of CNY 3,000 (master’s) or CNY 3,500 (doctoral) per month |
| USTB Dingxin Scholarship (also titled Chancellor Scholarship) | Directly to USTB; select “Dingxin Scholarship” in the portal | November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027 | Master’s under 40, doctoral under 45 | Full: tuition, on-campus accommodation, living allowance, medical insurance. Partial: one or several of those items |
| Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students | Select it in the USTB admissions system when you apply | New students: November 1, 2026 to June 15, 2027 | Master’s under 35, doctoral under 40 upon enrollment; HSK 5 minimum | Tuition waiver and accommodation fee waiver support, in Categories A, B and C |
USTB’s own advice: master’s and doctoral applicants are encouraged to prioritize the Chinese Government Scholarship High-Level Postgraduate Program, because applying there also gives an opportunity to be considered for the Dingxin Scholarship.
A separate Silk Road Program has a provisional window of March to April 2027, subject to its own notice. This guide does not cover it in detail.
Degree Levels and Available Programs
USTB’s 2027 lists cover master’s and doctoral study across engineering, science, management, law, education, language and agriculture. Standard study time is 2 to 3 years for a master’s degree and 3 to 5 years for a doctorate. Scholarship durations are shorter or fixed, as shown below.
| Level | Standard study time | CSC Type B duration | Dingxin duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master’s | 2 to 3 years | 2 or 3 years | 2 to 3 years |
| Doctoral | 3 to 5 years | 4 years | 4 years |
Master’s programs marked as available in English
USTB’s 2027 master’s list labels these programs as available in English. Programs without that label are not marked as English-taught on the list.
- Safety Science and Engineering (Chinese and English)
- Metallurgical Engineering (Chinese and English)
- Environmental Science and Engineering (Chinese and English)
- Information and Communication Engineering (Chinese and English)
- Enterprise Management (Chinese and English)
- International Trade (English)
- Management Science and Engineering (Chinese and English)
- Public Administration, Educational Policy and Management specialization (English)
- Sociology (Chinese and English)
Doctoral programs
The 2027 doctoral list includes Safety Science and Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Nano Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Business Administration, Management Science and Engineering, and a few others. That list does not label the teaching language, so email admission@ustb.edu.cn before you assume a doctoral program is taught in English.
Supervisors can be browsed through USTB’s faculty lookup by college and major, and a supervisor acceptance letter is optional.
Eligibility and Age Limits
Every route requires you to be a non-Chinese citizen in good health. You need a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) for a master’s program and a master’s degree (or equivalent) for a doctoral program. Final-year students can apply with a pre-graduation certificate or proof of enrollment, then supplement the official degree certificate after admission.
The age limit is where applicants go wrong, because it changes by route. USTB states that scholarship age rules override the general admission limits (general limits are 40 or younger for master’s and 45 or younger for doctoral applicants).
| Your situation | CSC Type B | Dingxin | Beijing Government |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master’s applicant aged 34 or younger | Age fits | Age fits | Age fits (counted upon enrollment) |
| Master’s applicant aged 35 to 39 | Over the limit | Age fits | Over the limit |
| Doctoral applicant aged 39 or younger | Age fits | Age fits | Age fits (counted upon enrollment) |
| Doctoral applicant aged 40 to 44 | Over the limit | Age fits | Over the limit |
| HSK 4 only, Chinese-taught program | Possible, with up to one year of Chinese language training | Check with USTB | Not enough (HSK 5 minimum) |
The CSC and Dingxin pages do not say whether age is measured at application or at enrollment. Only the Beijing Government page says “upon enrollment”. If you are close to a limit, ask USTB in writing.
International Applicant Guidance
USTB’s 2027 graduate pages do not publish nationality quotas or a regional allocation. Eligibility is stated as non-Chinese citizenship with a valid foreign passport, so applicants from any country can apply directly under the Type B, Dingxin and Beijing Government routes if they meet the age, degree and language rules.
- Type A depends on your country. This route runs through your home country’s dispatching authority or the Chinese embassy or consulate, with a window that varies by country. Contact them first and request a Pre-Admission Notice from USTB at csctypea@ustb.edu.cn.
- Chinese-language level matters. The Chinese-taught tracks set HSK minimums, and the Beijing Government Scholarship asks for a friendly attitude toward China as part of its eligibility wording.
- English exemption wording is country-based. USTB asks for English proof only if English is not an official language of your home country, but it does not publish a country list. Confirm your case by email before skipping a test.
- Documents must be in Chinese or English. Notarized degree certificates and transcripts are accepted in those two languages only.
For Pakistani Applicants
Pakistani applicants have two practical choices: the HEC-nominated Type A route or a direct application to USTB under Type B, Dingxin or the Beijing Government Scholarship. HEC states that it handles nomination and selection for Type A only, and that applicants applying directly under Type B or any other Chinese Government Scholarship program are responsible for their own applications and correspondence.
- HEC call year. The HEC page I reviewed describes the 2026–27 call, with 75 seats (35 bachelor’s, 25 master’s and 15 PhD). I did not find a 2027–28 HEC call yet, so check HEC’s Chinese Government Scholarship page before planning around Type A.
- English test. English is among Pakistan’s official languages, so USTB’s “if English is not the official language” wording may apply to you. USTB has not confirmed this for Pakistan, so email admission@ustb.edu.cn before you leave out IELTS or TOEFL.
- Document language. Any document that is not in Chinese or English will need translation, but USTB does not publish translation or attestation rules. Ask what it accepts before paying for certification.
- Time difference. Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5) is three hours behind Beijing (UTC+8), which matters on deadline day.
What the Funding Covers and What It Does Not
Do not use the phrase “fully funded” for the whole page, because the routes differ. The classification below follows USTB’s own descriptions.
| Route | Classification | Covered | Not confirmed by USTB’s pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSC Type B | Full funding as described | Tuition, accommodation, living allowance (CNY 3,000 master’s, CNY 3,500 doctoral per month), medical insurance | International airfare, visa costs, document and test costs |
| Dingxin, full award | Full funding as described | Tuition, on-campus accommodation, living allowance, comprehensive medical insurance | Living allowance amount, airfare |
| Dingxin, partial award | Partial funding | One or several of the items above | Which items you receive is set at award |
| Beijing Government | Partial, waiver-based | Tuition waiver and accommodation fee waiver support | Category-by-category amounts; insurance payment receipt is a required application item |
USTB’s scholarship list also has a separate “Application for Flight Ticket (CSC Scholarship)” page. Read it before assuming airfare is or is not provided.
What a full award is worth: a cost illustration
USTB publishes these self-funded rates in RMB. They show what a scholarship offsets.
| Cost item | Chinese-taught | English-taught |
|---|---|---|
| Master’s tuition | CNY 31,600 per year | CNY 37,600 per year |
| Doctoral tuition | CNY 41,600 per year | CNY 47,600 per year |
| Application fee | CNY 600 (non-refundable) | |
| Accommodation | 2-person room CNY 1,500 per bed per month; 4-person room CNY 750 per bed per month | |
| Medical insurance | CNY 800 per year or CNY 400 per semester | |
Worked example (illustrative): A self-funded, English-taught master’s degree over 2 years in a 4-person room costs about CNY 75,200 in tuition (2 × 37,600), CNY 1,600 in insurance (2 × 800), CNY 18,000 in housing (750 × 12 months × 2 years) and CNY 600 in application fees, for a total of CNY 95,400. The 12 billed months a year is my assumption, not a USTB statement, and the total excludes food, travel and visa costs. Convert to your currency with a current exchange rate.
On-campus beds are limited. USTB says students who cannot get a dormitory place must arrange housing off campus on their own, so even a scholarship that includes accommodation may need a backup plan.
Required Documents
USTB lists the same core file for general master’s and doctoral admission and for the Chinese Government Scholarship. All graduate documents are submitted online as electronic copies, and notarized copies are required where noted.
| Document | What USTB asks for |
|---|---|
| Online application form | Completed in the application system, with the CNY 600 fee paid |
| Degree certificate(s) | Bachelor’s for master’s applicants; bachelor’s and master’s for doctoral applicants. Original notarized copy in Chinese or English |
| Academic transcript(s) | Same levels as the degrees. Original notarized copy in Chinese or English, showing all courses and the grading standard |
| Personal statement with research proposal | At least 1,000 words (master’s) or 1,500 words (doctoral), in Chinese or English; template available from USTB |
| Two recommendation letters | From professors or associate professors, with at least one who knows your current field |
| Language certificate | HSK for Chinese-taught programs; IELTS, TOEFL or another official certificate for English-taught programs where required |
| Passport copy | Valid ordinary passport |
| Health certificate | USTB template |
| Financial guarantee letter | USTB template (listed as a financial guarantee commitment on the scholarship page) |
| Police clearance certificate | Showing no criminal record |
| Supervisor acceptance letter | Optional |
| Publications list and abstracts | Optional |
Your personal statement carries the research proposal, so draft it early. Our motivation letter guide covers structure and common mistakes, though USTB’s statement has a minimum word count and must include a research plan. If a scan is too large for the portal, try the PDF Compressor. USTB’s pages I reviewed do not publish file-size limits.
Templates for the personal statement, health certificate, financial guarantee and supervisor letter are on USTB’s application template page.
Language Requirements
| Teaching language | General admission | CSC Type B | Beijing Government |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese-taught | HSK 5 (master’s), HSK 6 (doctoral) | HSK 4 minimum; HSK 5 listed in the document list; HSK 4 holders may apply for 1 extra year of Chinese training | HSK 5 minimum |
| English-taught | IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80 or other official certificate, if English is not an official language of your home country | Same | Corresponding proof of English proficiency |
USTB’s lists do not mention a medium-of-instruction certificate as a substitute for a test score. If your previous degree was taught in English and you have no IELTS or TOEFL, ask USTB whether it will accept that proof instead of assuming it will. Use our IELTS Band Score Calculator to check your overall band against the 6.0 requirement.
Application Procedure Step by Step
This sequence follows USTB’s official description for direct applicants under the Chinese Government Scholarship Type B route. The Dingxin and Beijing Government routes use the same USTB portal but without the CSC registration step.
Check the 2027 master’s or doctoral list and confirm the language of instruction before anything else.
Use the tables above. Age limits differ for each scholarship.
Allow time for notarization and any translation. Use USTB’s templates where provided.
USTB says Type B applicants register first in the Chinese Government Scholarship International Student Management Information System, using USTB’s institution code 10008. You do not upload the Pre-Admission Letter at this stage.
Log in at onlineapply.ustb.edu.cn, select your scholarship route (for example, Dingxin Scholarship), upload your documents and pay CNY 600. The fee is non-refundable. Use only this official address for payment.
USTB announces the admission list by the end of June. For Type B, you are then notified and receive a Pre-Admission Letter, which you submit to the CSC system to complete your registration.
In July, USTB emails the electronic Admission Notice and Form JW202 from admission@ustb.edu.cn. These scanned copies can be used for the visa application.
For Type A, you apply through your home country’s authority or the Chinese embassy or consulate and register in the CSC system, selecting USTB as first choice. After you are officially awarded, you then register in the USTB application system.
Deadlines and Time Zones
| Route | Official window |
|---|---|
| General master’s and doctoral admission | November 1, 2026 to June 15, 2027 |
| CSC Type B, High-Level Postgraduate Program | November 1, 2026 to March 10, 2027 |
| CSC Type B, Silk Road Program | March to April 2027 (provisional, subject to the program notice) |
| Dingxin Scholarship | November 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027 |
| Beijing Government Scholarship, new students | November 1, 2026 to June 15, 2027 |
| CSC Type A | Generally November to March; varies by country |
USTB’s pages give dates but no closing time or time zone. Beijing time (UTC+8) is the reasonable assumption for a Beijing university, but it is not confirmed. As an illustration only, 11:59 p.m. Beijing time on March 10, 2027 would be 8:59 p.m. in Pakistan (UTC+5), 10:59 a.m. US Eastern (EST, UTC−5; US daylight time begins March 14, 2027) and 7:59 a.m. US Pacific (PST, UTC−8). Plan to submit well before the date.
Add the key dates to our Scholarship Deadline Tracker, and confirm each one on USTB’s official pages.
How Selection Works
USTB’s pages do not publish scoring criteria for the Chinese Government Scholarship or the Dingxin Scholarship. They describe the documents and the timeline, not a ranking formula. Assume your academic record, research proposal and recommendation letters will be read together.
The Beijing Government Scholarship is more specific. For new students, Categories B and C expect a previous degree from a key university in your home country with an average score of at least 80 or GPA 3.0, in principle. Category A expects a top-500 world university or equivalent key institution with at least 85 or GPA 3.6, in principle. Outstanding research achievements or important awards receive preference. You also cannot hold other government, social-organization or host-university scholarships at the same time, apart from one-off awards.
Where USTB’s Own Pages Disagree
Four details conflict or look inconsistent across USTB’s 2027 pages. Here is how to handle each one.
| Issue | What the pages say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Scholarship name | The admissions page and the scholarship menu call it the Chancellor Scholarship, while the page body and the portal wording call it the Dingxin Scholarship. The dates and benefits match. | Treat them as the same award and select “Dingxin Scholarship” in the portal. Ask USTB if the portal shows something different. |
| CSC Type B closing date | The admissions page says generally November 1 to April 15. The scholarship page gives November 1, 2026 to March 10, 2027 for the High-Level Postgraduate Program. | Plan around March 10, 2027, the earlier and program-specific date. |
| Age limits | General admission allows up to 40 (master’s) and 45 (doctoral). Scholarship pages set lower limits for CSC and Beijing Government. | Use the limit for the route you are applying to, because USTB says scholarship rules prevail. |
| Chinese-taught language level | CSC eligibility says HSK 4 at least, but the document list says HSK 5 with a possible extra year for HSK 4 holders. | If you hold only HSK 4, apply and expect the extra language year; confirm with USTB. |
Visa and Arrival
Admitted students apply for an X1 student visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, using the Admission Notice and the Visa Application Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or JW202). After arriving in China, convert the visa to a residence permit for study at the International Student Center within 30 days.
Students living off campus must register with local public security authorities within 24 hours of moving in. On campus, the dormitory reception handles that registration. Chinese Ministry of Education rules also require medical insurance purchased in China, which you can buy online on registration day. USTB will not complete registration without it.
After Admission
- Register in early September, or on the dates printed in your Admission Notice.
- Bring original degree and graduation certificates for re-verification of your admission eligibility.
- Dingxin scholarship places are not reserved for students who fail to arrive and register as required.
- Chinese Government Scholarship holders must complete the annual review in April to May and submit the form to the International Student Center by April each year.
- Dingxin funding continues only for students who pass the annual review, and the duration generally cannot be extended.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using one date for everything. Four different windows apply, and the earliest closes March 10, 2027.
- Skipping CSC registration on Type B. The USTB portal alone is not enough for the Chinese Government Scholarship.
- Applying the wrong age limit. A 38-year-old master’s applicant is over the CSC limit but within the Dingxin limit.
- Assuming English-taught. Only programs marked as English-available are listed that way, and the doctoral list has no language labels.
- Uploading plain scans. Degrees and transcripts must be original notarized copies in Chinese or English.
- Forgetting out-of-pocket costs. The application fee, notarization, translation, tests, health exam and travel are not covered by the described funding.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the USTB 2027 master’s and PhD application open and close?
USTB’s general window for 2027 master’s and doctoral applications runs from November 1, 2026 to June 15, 2027. Scholarship routes have their own windows: the Chinese Government Scholarship High-Level Postgraduate Program runs from November 1, 2026 to March 10, 2027, the Dingxin Scholarship closes April 30, 2027, and new-student Beijing Government Scholarship applications close June 15, 2027. USTB’s pages do not state a closing time or time zone.
Is the USTB scholarship fully funded?
It depends on the route. USTB describes the Chinese Government Scholarship independent enrollment program (Type B) as covering tuition, accommodation, a living allowance of CNY 3,000 per month for master’s students or CNY 3,500 per month for doctoral students, and medical insurance. The Dingxin Scholarship has a full version covering tuition, on-campus accommodation, living allowance and insurance, plus partial awards that cover one or several of those items. The Beijing Government Scholarship is described as a tuition and accommodation fee waiver.
How much is the USTB application fee?
The application fee is CNY 600, paid online through the USTB application system. USTB states that it is non-refundable regardless of the admission result.
What are the age limits for USTB scholarships?
For the Chinese Government Scholarship, master’s applicants must be under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40. For the Dingxin Scholarship, the limits are under 40 for master’s and under 45 for doctoral applicants. The Beijing Government Scholarship requires master’s students to be under 35 and doctoral students under 40 upon enrollment. USTB says scholarship age rules override the general admission limits.
Do I need IELTS, TOEFL or HSK?
It depends on the language of instruction. For Chinese-taught programs, general admission asks for HSK Level 5 (master’s) or HSK Level 6 (doctoral), while the Chinese Government Scholarship accepts HSK Level 4 with a possible year of Chinese language training. For English-taught programs, applicants whose home country does not have English as an official language must provide IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80 or another official English proficiency certificate.
Can I apply to more than one USTB scholarship?
USTB’s pages do not state a limit. For master’s and doctoral applicants, USTB recommends prioritizing the Chinese Government Scholarship High-Level Postgraduate Program, which also gives an opportunity to be considered for the Dingxin Scholarship. The Beijing Government Scholarship cannot be held together with other scholarships from governments, social organizations or the host university, so email admission@ustb.edu.cn if you plan to combine routes.
Do I have to mail documents to USTB?
No. USTB states that graduate applications are submitted online and that no physical documents need to be mailed. Admitted students must bring original degree and graduation certificates to registration for re-verification.
What visa do admitted students need?
Admitted students apply for an X1 student visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad using the Admission Notice and the Visa Application Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or JW202). After arriving, the visa must be converted to a residence permit for study at the International Student Center within 30 days.
