Home / SMART Scholarship 2027
I read the official SMART pages line by line before writing this guide, and one point matters more than any other: the award is for citizens of five countries, and it comes with a job commitment. If both fit you, SMART is one of the strongest funding packages for STEM degrees in the United States. If they do not, knowing that today can save you weeks of effort.
This guide covers eligibility, the 22 approved disciplines, benefits, the application tasks, and a deadline table for every major time zone. It also has separate sections for Pakistani, U.S., and other international readers, because each group faces a different situation.

SMART Scholarship 2027 Overview
The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program, short for Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation, is funded by the U.S. Department of War (DoW). Older SMART pages still use the previous name, Department of Defense (DoD), so you may see both. The program pays for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in approved STEM fields, then places scholars in civilian jobs at DoW facilities.
Applications open every year on August 1 and close on the first Friday in December. For this cycle, that Friday is December 4, 2026. The official pages report that 91% of scholars have completed, or are on track to complete, their service commitments, and they list more than 150 sponsoring facilities.
I compared the official pages with several partner and news-style summaries before writing this. Those summaries disagree on small details, such as how many disciplines are approved, so I followed the official lists whenever they differed.
Friday, December 4, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET. Reference forms and other supporting materials must also arrive by the deadline, and late applications and references are not accepted.
Who Can Apply for the SMART Scholarship
Eligibility is pass or fail, so check it first. Selection comes later and has its own section below.
Eligible Nationalities
SMART accepts applications only from citizens of these five countries at the time of application:
- United States
- Australia
- Canada
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
Nationals and permanent residents are not eligible. The program also notes that a person with dual citizenship may need to renounce a non-U.S. citizenship, and that incomplete or inaccurate citizenship reporting may lead to disqualification. Read the official citizenship guidance before you start.
A few popular pages describe SMART as open to international students in general. The official citizenship rule says otherwise, so please do not rely on those headlines.
Degree Levels Offered
The program funds three levels of study. Check which one matches your plan for fall 2027.
- Bachelor’s degree, including high school seniors and incoming college freshmen who will start in fall 2027
- Master’s degree
- Doctoral degree
Available Subjects
Your degree must fall under one of 22 approved SMART STEM disciplines. These are umbrella categories, so a specific major can sit under one or more of them.
| Subject Group | Approved Disciplines |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Nuclear Engineering |
| Computing and data | Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Information Sciences, Operations Research, Software Engineering |
| Natural sciences and mathematics | Biosciences, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physics |
| Cognitive sciences | Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences |
Note: An older SMART brochure and several third-party pages list Cybersecurity or give a different discipline count, such as 21, 23, or 24. The current DoW STEM program page lists the 22 above, so use the live official list when you decide.
Academic and Other Conditions
Beyond citizenship and discipline, the official eligibility rules for this cycle include the following.
- Be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2028
- Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be currently pursuing, or intend to pursue, study in fall 2027
- Be enrolled in, or plan to attend, a regionally accredited U.S. college or university
- Be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
- Request between 1 and 5 years of degree funding, starting August 2027
- Complete summer internships if your award is longer than 1.5 years
- Accept a one-for-one post-graduation service commitment as a civilian DoW employee
SMART states its GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale. If your school grades differently, my CGPA calculator gives a rough check, but the portal and your registrar decide how your grades count.
How Winners Are Selected
SMART describes itself as a merit-based program. I could not find a published scoring rubric, point system, or acceptance rate on the official pages, so I will not guess at weights or odds. What I can tell you is what your file contains: the written sections, your transcripts, and your references.
Treat eligibility as the entry ticket and the quality of your file as the real contest. Meeting the minimum GPA does not guarantee an award.
Ways to Strengthen Your File
These four habits come from how the application is built, not from insider knowledge of the review.
Match a listed discipline
Name the umbrella discipline that fits your major, and explain the link in your own words.
Be specific
Use real projects, labs, or coursework instead of general enthusiasm for science.
Brief referees early
Send each referee your plan and the deadline, because late references are not accepted.
Show you want the service
Explain why a civilian DoW career fits your goals, since the service is part of the award.
SMART Scholarship Funding and Benefits
I would describe SMART as fully funded with a work obligation. It is not tuition-only and it is not partial funding. All amounts are in U.S. dollars, the official currency.
Full tuition
Covered at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
$30,000 to $46,000 a year
The amount depends on your degree level.
Health and book support
Both allowances are listed as part of the package.
Summer work and a mentor
Internships at a DoW facility apply to awards longer than 1.5 years, and scholars get an experienced mentor.
Guaranteed employment
A civilian position at a DoW facility follows degree completion.
The Service Commitment in Plain English
Accepting an award means accepting a one-for-one commitment: one year as a civilian DoW employee for each year of SMART funding. A scholar funded for two years, for example, owes two years of service, as set out in the service agreement. The work is civilian employment, not enlistment.
Important: Benefits and stipend ranges can change between cycles. Confirm each item on the official program page before you plan your budget or your career.
Required Documents and Application Tasks
The official instructions list the tasks below, and you complete them inside the portal. Every task must be finished before the Submit button appears. The list also begins with the Privacy Act Statement and Program Materials, which come before the sections here.
About Me
Personal and education details, plus your citizenship. Report citizenship fully and accurately.
Proposed Award Details
Your degree plan and the number of funding years you request, from 1 to 5.
Personal Statement
Your written case for the award. Answer the portal prompt directly.
My Experiences
Your relevant academic, work, and project experience, entered in the portal.
References
The program must receive reference forms by the deadline, and you can monitor their status.
Transcripts
Academic transcripts as the portal requests. Your cumulative GPA must meet the 3.0 minimum.
DoW Employee Supervisor Letter
Listed in the official instructions. Read that page to see whether it applies to you.
Some third-party summaries mention a rรฉsumรฉ. The official instruction list I read shows My Experiences instead, so keep a short rรฉsumรฉ ready in case a prompt asks for one. For the statement itself, my guide on how to write a winning motivation letter shows a structure you can adapt, but follow the SMART prompts first.
English Language Requirements
I did not find a separate English-test requirement in the SMART eligibility rules I read. The rules focus on citizenship, GPA, discipline, enrollment, clearance, and service. Your university, however, sets its own admission and language rules, and you must plan to attend or be enrolled at a regionally accredited U.S. school.
If your school asks for an English score, my IELTS band score calculator helps you estimate where you stand. It is a planning aid only, so rely on your school’s official language page.
Re-verify before you apply: Scholarship portals and school rules change quickly. Check the English and admission requirements for your specific program on the official university website right before you submit.
Costs to Plan For
The scholarship covers tuition, but a few costs may still sit with you. I did not see an application fee mentioned on the official pages I read, so confirm that inside the portal before you pay anyone anything.
- Official transcripts, if your school charges for them
- Time and care to brief your referees early
- Living and relocation costs beyond the stipend and allowances, which the pages I read do not itemize
I have not converted any amounts into other currencies, because exchange rates move daily. Use a live converter if you need one.
Application Procedure
The flowchart below shows the route from checking citizenship to the service pledge. Follow the steps in order, and confirm each one on the official portal.
Check citizenship, GPA, age, discipline, and school type against the lists above before you invest time.
Complete the registration page first. You will then receive an email with login steps, and the program asks you to read its account authentication setup instructions before logging in.
A progress bar tracks your tasks, and you can complete the application over several sessions. The Submit button appears only after every task is complete.
Enter your referees early and check the status in the portal. The program must receive their forms by the deadline.
Applications are not submitted until you click the button. Do this well before the cutoff, then keep monitoring your reference status.
Add the date to my scholarship deadline tracker so it sits next to your other applications.
Deadlines and Time Zones
The program states its cutoff in Eastern Time, which matters a great deal if you live far away. The timeline below uses dates from the official eligibility and instruction text. I left out a results date because I could not verify one.
The table converts the official cutoff of 5:00 PM Eastern Time on December 4, 2026. In December, Eastern Time is UTC minus 5 hours, and I calculated the other rows from that. Rows marked with a following day fall on Saturday, December 5, 2026.
| Time Zone | Deadline in That Zone |
|---|---|
| ET (official), including Toronto | Friday, December 4, 2026, 5:00 PM |
| PT, including Vancouver | Friday, December 4, 2026, 2:00 PM |
| GMT, including London | Friday, December 4, 2026, 10:00 PM |
| PKT, Pakistan | Saturday, December 5, 2026, 3:00 AM |
| Sydney and Melbourne (AEDT) | Saturday, December 5, 2026, 9:00 AM |
| Auckland (NZDT) | Saturday, December 5, 2026, 11:00 AM |
Submit at least two days early. Portals slow down near a cutoff, and references can take time to arrive. Confirm the final time inside your account.
Visa and Residence Rules
SMART pages explain the scholarship, not immigration rules. U.S. citizens do not need a student visa. Citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom who plan to study in the United States will need the right to study there, and the rules depend on your school and your situation.
The pages I read do not explain visa steps for non-U.S. citizens who win an award. Speak with your university’s international student office, and ask the SMART program directly how service and clearance work for you. Treat any visa timeline you read elsewhere as an estimate.
For Pakistani Applicants
If you hold only a Pakistani passport, SMART is not open to you. Pakistan is not among the five eligible countries, and the program also excludes nationals and permanent residents. I would rather say that plainly than let you spend a month on a form you cannot submit.
The exception is real but narrow. A student of Pakistani origin who is also a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom can apply on that citizenship. Report it exactly, because inaccurate reporting may lead to disqualification, and dual citizens may need to renounce a non-U.S. citizenship.
If you qualify through another passport and live in Pakistan, the deadline falls at 3:00 AM PKT on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Plan to submit days earlier rather than working through the night.
If you are not eligible, use the scholarship deadline tracker to find programs that accept Pakistani citizens. Be careful with agents, because anyone who offers to arrange SMART for a Pakistani passport holder is misleading you.
For U.S. Applicants
For U.S. citizens, the process is the most direct, because citizenship, school type, and clearance rules line up. Your real work is choosing the right discipline, requesting a sensible award length, and showing that you want the civilian career, not only the tuition.
- High school seniors: You can apply if you will start a bachelor’s degree in fall 2027, so do not wait for college credit.
- Current undergraduates: Request the number of years that matches the time you actually have left, within the 1 to 5 year range.
- Graduate students: Link your research topic to one of the 22 disciplines and explain the connection clearly.
You must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Answer every question truthfully, and ask the program early if something worries you. If you want more funding options for U.S. study, my guide to scholarships for undergraduate students in the USA is a useful next read.
For Other International Applicants
Your situation depends on your citizenship, not on where you currently live. Find your group below.
Citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
You are eligible on citizenship, but you must also plan to attend a regionally accredited U.S. school, so you need admission and the right to study there. Scholars must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and accept DoW civilian employment. I could not verify how that works for non-U.S. citizens, so contact the program through the official site before you invest weeks in the file.
Permanent Residents and Visa Holders
Permanent residency does not qualify. The program says nationals and permanent residents are not eligible, so living in the United States for years does not change the citizenship rule.
Citizens of All Other Countries
SMART is not open to you. Please do not pay anyone who says otherwise. Use the deadline tracker above to find scholarships that accept your nationality.
After You Receive an Offer
The service commitment is carried out under a service agreement, so read it fully before you accept. The program places scholars with a sponsoring facility, and scholars with awards longer than 1.5 years complete summer internships there.
- Read the service agreement and ask about anything unclear before you sign.
- Keep copies of every award letter and email.
- Plan your internship summers around your degree schedule.
- Stay in touch with the program about your degree completion date.
Failing to complete the service commitment has consequences, and the official terms spell them out. Do not accept an award unless you intend to complete the service.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming it is open to all international students: Only five citizenships qualify.
- Misreporting citizenship: Incomplete or inaccurate answers may lead to disqualification.
- Late references: Reference forms must arrive by the deadline, and late ones are not accepted.
- Forgetting to submit: Finishing the tasks is not enough, because you must click Submit Application.
- Picking the wrong discipline: Choose the umbrella category that honestly fits your degree.
- Ignoring the service: The civilian commitment is part of the award, so plan for it.
Scam Warning Signs
- Guaranteed selection: No genuine committee can promise you an award.
- Payment to an agent: You apply directly through the official portal, so no agent is needed.
- False urgency: Pressure to pay today is designed to stop you from checking.
- Personal email addresses: The official program uses its own domain, not a free mail account.
How to Apply Safely
Start from the official SMART website, and register only through the official application page. Official program email comes from the smartscholarship.org domain.
Important: Never send your passport scan, bank details, or a fee to an unverified contact. If someone promises a guaranteed award, treat it as a warning sign.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SMART Scholarship 2027 deadline?
The SMART Scholarship 2027 deadline is Friday, December 4, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Reference forms and other supporting materials must also reach the program by the deadline, because late applications and late references are not accepted. Confirm the exact cutoff inside the official portal before you submit.
Can Pakistani students apply for the SMART Scholarship 2027?
Pakistani citizens cannot apply unless they also hold citizenship of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. The program lists those five countries only, and nationals and permanent residents are not eligible. A Pakistani passport alone does not qualify.
Is the SMART Scholarship open to international students?
It is open only to citizens of five countries: the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Citizens of other countries cannot apply, and permanent residents are not eligible either. Applicants must also plan to attend or be enrolled at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
Is the SMART Scholarship fully funded?
It covers full tuition, an annual stipend of $30,000 to $46,000 depending on degree level, and health and book allowances. It also includes summer internships for awards longer than 1.5 years and a mentor. In return, scholars accept one year of civilian employment with the Department of War for every year of funding.
Does the SMART Scholarship require military service?
The official commitment is civilian employment with the Department of War, not military enlistment. You work one year as a civilian employee for every year of SMART funding. Read the service agreement carefully before you accept an award.
What GPA do I need for the SMART Scholarship?
Applicants must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. A higher GPA can help your file, but I could not verify a published scoring formula. Meeting the minimum alone does not guarantee an award.
Can high school seniors apply for the SMART Scholarship 2027?
Yes. High school seniors and incoming college freshmen who will start a bachelor’s degree in fall 2027 are eligible, as long as they meet the citizenship, GPA, and discipline rules.
Final Words
SMART is a serious opportunity, and it rewards applicants who read the rules before they write a word. Check your citizenship first, match your degree to one of the 22 disciplines, and submit well before 5:00 PM ET on December 4, 2026. If you are not eligible, you have lost nothing by learning that early, and the deadline tracker can point you toward programs that fit.
