This is not a fully funded scholarship. It lowers your foundation-year tuition by £5,000, so you still need a plan for the rest of the fee and for your living costs. Knowing that early is the difference between a smart application and an unpleasant surprise in December.
The university uses two names for this award: Reading Excellence Scholarship and International Foundation Excellence Scholarship. In this guide, I walk through who can apply, how the form works, what the English score rules look like, and how the deadline converts into Pakistan, US, and other time zones. I built it from the official scholarship page and the 2026 terms and conditions, and I mark clearly where you must confirm a detail with the university.

Overview
The University of Reading funds this award itself and runs it through its Global Academy, the department that teaches the International Foundation Pathways. The award is competitive, so meeting the rules gets you into the pool, but it does not guarantee a place in the winner's list.
Programs the Award Covers
The scholarship supports two routes, and you choose the one that matches how certain you are about your degree.
- International Foundation Programme (IFP): a one-year foundation course taught by Reading academics, with progression to most undergraduate degrees. It is the "1+3" route and starts in September or January.
- International Foundation Year (IFY): a four-year undergraduate degree that includes a foundation year. It suits you if you already know your subject. Schools such as Construction Management and Engineering, Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, and Law offer IFY courses.
For this guide, the study level is non-degree foundation study that leads to a bachelor's degree at Reading.
Subject Pathways and Progression Degrees
The IFP is split into three subject pathways, and the pathway you pick depends on the degree you want afterward. One January rule matters a lot: the Science and Mathematics pathway does not start in January.
Business, Management and Finance
Available for January and September entry.
Social Sciences and Art
Covers social sciences, arts, and humanities. Available for January and September entry.
Science and Mathematics
Not available to start in January. Science degree progression needs the September IFP.
The university lists these degrees as choices of recent IFP graduates: computer science, construction management and engineering, consumer behaviour and marketing, education studies, museum studies and archaeology, politics and international relations, psychology, and quantity surveying. Henley Business School options include accounting, business and management, finance, and real estate. Some undergraduate courses are closed to IFP graduates, so check the entry rules on your target course page before you pick a pathway.
Who Can Apply
This section covers eligibility only. How the university chooses among eligible people is a separate topic in the next section.
Eligibility Checklist
- You hold a formal offer for an IFP or IFY for the 2026/27 academic year. You do not have to accept the offer before you submit the scholarship form.
- The university classifies you as an international student for fee purposes.
- You applied to study full time.
- You are not already enrolled on an international foundation program in the UK.
- You do not already hold a full tuition scholarship or sponsorship.
- You can show academic achievement, either predicted or actual.
Note: I did not find a list of eligible nationalities on the official pages. Eligibility rests on your offer and your fee status, so confirm your fee status with the university before you count on the award.
How Winners Are Selected
Reading does not award this scholarship in order of application, and the review does not begin until after the closing date. Sending your form early helps you avoid technical problems, but it does not move you up a queue.
What Reviewers Look At
The terms say reviewers assess your academic accomplishments to date, whether predicted or actual. They also consider achievements outside study, such as extracurricular activity and voluntary work. Each form question has a 1,000-character limit, so every sentence has to earn its place.
How Decisions Work
- Not every application succeeds, and the university contacts only successful applicants.
- If a winner declines, the university moves to a reserve list, so some emails arrive after the 4-week target.
- The university's decision is final, and it does not take requests for reconsideration.
Funding and Benefits
The award is a tuition fee reduction of £5,000 for your IFP or IFY foundation year. The university applies it directly to your fees, so you never receive it as cash.
£5,000 off tuition
Applied to the year you are registered on the foundation pathway.
No cash alternative
If you pay in instalments, each payment is reduced in proportion.
No deferral
The award is valid for 2026/27 entry only and cannot move to a later year.
Apply again for the degree
IFY students must apply again for scholarship funding for the degree part the following year.
Combining the Award With Other Funding
You can hold more than one tuition scholarship if the total does not exceed the annual tuition cost. If the combined value goes over the fee, the university reduces this award by the excess. Tell the university if you later receive a full scholarship from another source, because it can withdraw all or part of this one.
Important: If you repeat a year of study, this scholarship does not pay for the repeat year. Completing the course ends the award.
Required Documents
The scholarship form is short, and the terms say you cannot attach supplementary documents. Reviewers can still look at transcripts or references you supplied for your admission application.
For the Scholarship Form
Formal offer
An offer for an IFP or IFY for 2026/27 admission.
Me@Reading access
The form appears in your applicant portal only; no other submission method is accepted.
Your own answers
Answers must be your own, true, and within 1,000 characters per question.
Current email address
Winners are notified by email, so your contact details must be up to date.
For Admission and Visa Stages
- Evidence that you meet the entry requirements, uploaded after you accept your offer.
- An English test result that meets the score for your pathway.
- Your tuition fee deposit, which the university asks for before it issues your CAS.
The Motivation Letter Word Counter is a handy place to draft and trim your answers before you paste them into the portal. Check the final length against the 1,000-character limit inside the form.
English Language Requirements
Reading bases its English rules on IELTS. The scores below are the same for September and January starts, and they depend on your pathway.
| Intended degree pathway | IFP IELTS | IFY IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Business, Management and Finance | 5.5 overall, no skill below 4.5 | 5.5 overall, no skill below 5.5 |
| Social Sciences, Arts, Humanities | 5.5 overall, no skill below 4.5 | 5.5 overall, no skill below 5.5 |
| Science and Mathematics (September start only) | 5.0 overall, no skill below 4.5 | 5.5 overall, no skill below 5.5 |
The university lists higher or different scores for Speech and Language Therapy and Pharmacy, and those do not apply to the January IFP pathways above. To study on campus you need a student visa, and for the IFP that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Besides IELTS taken at a UKVI approved centre, Reading accepts LanguageCert International ESOL, Trinity ISE UKVI, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI at equivalent scores. For the IFY, some local curriculum English qualifications that are not UKVI approved are also accepted.
You can estimate your overall band with the IELTS Band Score Calculator before you book a test.
Scholarship portals and score rules change. Open the official English language requirements page right before you submit and confirm the score for your exact pathway. Do not rely on any blog, including this one, for the final number.
Costs
The pages I reviewed do not state the foundation-year tuition fee, so look up the current amount on your course page. What the official pages do confirm is how the award fits around your other costs.
| Cost item | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Tuition fee | The award reduces it by £5,000 for the foundation year. |
| Deposit | You pay a tuition fee deposit to secure your place, after the university accepts your evidence. |
| Living costs | The award is a tuition reduction only, so it does not pay living costs. |
| Flight ticket incentive | This is a separate offer for the September 2026 intake, and scholarship holders are not eligible. |
The university also guarantees International Foundation students a room in its accommodation. Compare the housing price with your budget before you decide.
Application Procedure
The chart below shows the route in eight steps, from checking your eligibility to accepting the award. The scholarship form only appears after you hold an offer, so apply to the course first.
Confirm your offer status, fee status, and full-time study plan against the checklist above.
Use the official IFP application page and pick the January 2027 entry form. Create an account if you are a new applicant.
You need a formal offer before the scholarship form opens. If admissions is slow, email ifpadmissions@reading.ac.uk early.
Eligible students get access to the scholarship form there. It stays available until the closing date.
Answer every question in full, keep each answer under 1,000 characters, and accept the terms and conditions.
The round closes at 11:59 PM GMT on November 16, 2026, and the university does not accept late forms.
Only successful applicants are contacted. If you hear nothing, treat the result as unsuccessful.
Respond by the date in your award email, or the university withdraws the scholarship.
Deadlines and Time Zones
The official deadline is the end of the day in Greenwich Mean Time. Round one and round two were for September 2026 entry and have passed. Only round three is still open.
Deadline Conversion Table
I converted the official deadline into the time zones most of my readers use. In November, the UK is on GMT, and the US has already moved back to standard time.
| Time zone | Local date and time of the deadline |
|---|---|
| GMT (official) | November 16, 2026, 11:59 PM |
| PKT (Pakistan) | November 17, 2026, 4:59 AM |
| ET (US Eastern, standard time) | November 16, 2026, 6:59 PM |
| PT (US Pacific, standard time) | November 16, 2026, 3:59 PM |
I suggest submitting at least two days early. Portals often slow down near a closing time, and the university does not take late forms. The Scholarship Deadline Tracker can hold this date for you alongside your other applications.
Residence Permit or Visa
The scholarship does not replace a visa, and winning it does not guarantee visa approval. The route depends on the pathway you choose.
- IFP: this is the "1+3" Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) option. After the university accepts your evidence and you pay the deposit, you receive a CAS within six months. It is an electronic document with a 14-digit code that you use for your student visa application.
- IFY: the courses with an included foundation year provide a single four-year visa that covers all years of study, according to the university's pathways page.
- English test: the IFP visa route needs a SELT, as explained in the English section above.
Visa fees, health charges, and processing times change, so read the UK government's current student visa guidance before you pay anything. I did not verify those figures for this post.
For Pakistani Applicants
Pakistan appears by name in the university's entry requirements, which makes the grade check simple. The scholarship rules themselves do not mention a nationality, so your offer and fee status are what count.
Grades and Qualifications
- For the HSSC route, the listed minimum is a grade of 60 percent.
- If you studied A levels, the guide lists 72 UCAS tariff points or above.
- For IGCSE, it lists five passes at grades A to C in relevant subjects.
Treat these as general guides. The university may ask for higher grades in subjects linked to your intended degree. If you are unsure, email ifpadmissions@reading.ac.uk before you pay for a test.
Your Deadline in Pakistan
The cutoff lands at 4:59 AM PKT on November 17, which can trick people into thinking they have one more day. Plan to submit by the evening of November 16 in Pakistan, then check that you received a confirmation in the portal.
Tip: Sort out your English test early. The university says you must meet its English requirements to be accepted, so a ready scholarship form cannot help if your score is missing.
For US Applicants
My biggest readership is in the United States, so here is how this works for you. A US high school diploma with a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.0 is the listed entry level for the IFP and IFY.
What Is Different for You
- Reviewers consider predicted or actual grades, so seniors who have not yet graduated can still be assessed.
- The official pages do not say whether a US passport lets you skip the SELT, so ask admissions before you book a test.
- The university decides your fee status. US citizens should not assume which category applies to them.
Your Deadline in the US
The deadline is 6:59 PM Eastern or 3:59 PM Pacific on Monday, November 16, 2026. If you are on the West Coast, that is a mid-afternoon cutoff, so finish before lunch rather than after work.
For Other International Applicants
The university sets entry grades country by country, and the scholarship follows your offer. Here are a few examples from the official list to show how widely the grades differ.
| Country | Listed entry qualification |
|---|---|
| Bangladesh | Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) 70% and above |
| India | Standard X certificate with a 55% average, or a Standard XII certificate with scores below the undergraduate entry level |
| Nigeria | Senior School Certificate with C or above in 5 subjects |
| Kenya | KCSE average grade C |
| Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Yemen | Thanawiyah 75% or a 2.8 GPA overall average |
The full list covers more than 40 countries, so open the official entry requirements page for yours.
Deadline in Your Time Zone
I calculated these local times myself from 11:59 PM GMT, so they are not official. Daylight saving rules can change, so check your local clock.
| Country | Local time of the deadline |
|---|---|
| Nigeria | November 17, 2026, 12:59 AM |
| Kenya | November 17, 2026, 2:59 AM |
| United Arab Emirates | November 17, 2026, 3:59 AM |
| India | November 17, 2026, 5:29 AM |
| Bangladesh | November 17, 2026, 5:59 AM |
After You Receive an Offer
Two separate acceptances matter after a scholarship decision: the scholarship and the course offer. Missing either one can cost you the award.
If You Win the Scholarship
- Read the award email for the acceptance deadline, because the university withdraws the offer if you miss it.
- Accept your course offer as well if you have not already done so.
- Remember that a conditional offer makes the scholarship conditional on the same entry requirements.
Next Admission Steps
- Upload your evidence of entry requirements when the university asks.
- Pay the tuition fee deposit to secure your place.
- Wait for your CAS, then apply for your student visa.
Common Mistakes
Most lost opportunities with this kind of award come from small process errors, not weak grades.
Eligibility Mistakes
- Waiting for the offer: You cannot open the scholarship form without one, so apply to the course well before November 16.
- Assuming full funding: The award covers £5,000 of tuition, not your whole stay.
- Choosing science in January: The Science and Mathematics pathway does not start in January.
Form and Deadline Mistakes
- Ignoring the character limit: Each answer is capped at 1,000 characters.
- Planning to attach files: The terms do not allow supplementary documents.
- Misreading the time zone: The cutoff is 11:59 PM GMT, not your local midnight.
- Outdated contact details: Winners are told by email only.
Scam Warning Signs
Scholarship scams usually target students who feel pressed for time. These patterns should make you stop and verify.
- Guaranteed selection: The terms say not every application succeeds, so nobody can promise a win.
- Payment to a private person: I found no payment request for the scholarship form on the official pages.
- Pressure to act fast: Real deadlines are published on the university's own site.
- Free email addresses: University staff use reading.ac.uk addresses.
How to Apply Safely
Use only the official Reading pages and the Me@Reading applicant portal. You can apply to the IFP and IFY directly through the university's online system, so you do not need to pay anyone to submit it for you.
Official contacts: Admissions questions go to ifpadmissions@reading.ac.uk, and scholarship questions go to scholarships@reading.ac.uk. Never send your passport scan or bank details to an unverified contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Reading International Foundation Excellence Scholarship fully funded?
No. It is a partial award. The University of Reading reduces your International Foundation Programme or International Foundation Year tuition by £5,000, and you pay the remaining fees and your living costs.
What is the deadline for the January 2027 round?
Round three closes on November 16, 2026 at 11:59 PM GMT. That is 4:59 AM on November 17 in Pakistan (PKT), 6:59 PM on November 16 in US Eastern Time (ET), and 3:59 PM on November 16 in US Pacific Time (PT).
Do I need an offer before I can apply for the scholarship?
Yes. You must hold an offer for an International Foundation Programme or International Foundation Year. You do not need to have accepted the offer when you submit the scholarship form, but the scholarship is withdrawn if you miss the acceptance deadline in your award email.
Can Pakistani students apply?
I did not find a nationality list on the official pages. The rules are an offer for an IFP or IFY, international fee status, and full-time study. For admission, the listed Pakistan qualification is the HSSC with a minimum grade of 60 percent. Confirm your fee status with the university.
Can US students apply?
Yes, if the university classifies you as an international student for fee purposes and you hold an offer. The listed entry requirement for a US high school diploma is a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.0, and reviewers consider predicted or actual grades.
Can I send extra documents with my scholarship form?
No. The terms say supplementary documents cannot be submitted. Each question has a 1,000-character limit, although reviewers may look at transcripts or references you supplied during your admission application.
When will I hear the result?
The university aims to email successful applicants within 4 weeks of the closing date. It contacts only successful applicants, and its decision is final.
Final Words
Three actions matter most. First, get your IFP or IFY offer in place well before November 16, 2026. Second, write short, specific answers to the scholarship questions and submit before the 11:59 PM GMT cutoff. Third, confirm every score and fee detail on the official Reading pages right before you apply.
Fees, rules, and dates can change, so I update this guide when the university changes its pages. If you spot a difference between this post and the official page, trust the official page and tell me in the comments.
