What Is the OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarship 2027?

The OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027 are internal mobility grants from Oslo Metropolitan University. Each faculty runs its own round and funds employed PhD candidates, and in some faculties postdocs, for a short research visit at a university or institute abroad. They are not a way to enroll at OsloMet.

That distinction matters because the name reads like an open call. It isn’t one. What exists is a funding line inside the PhD and postdoc career at OsloMet, handled by each faculty’s research administration.

The purpose, according to OsloMet’s own pages, is collaboration. The Health Sciences call says the money should raise the quality of the doctoral project and build links with international research groups, while the SAM page frames it as collaboration that benefits both the candidate and OsloMet.

“you have the opportunity to apply for funding for extended research stays abroad”

Source: OsloMet PhD vacancy text

We classify this as partial funding. The grant reimburses extra costs of the stay. It doesn’t replace a salary, and it doesn’t pay for a degree, so calling it fully funded would mislead readers.

Who Can Apply for the OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027?

Only people on an OsloMet contract can apply. At the Faculty of Health Sciences, you need an employed PhD position and admission to the Health Sciences or Behaviour Analysis program. SAM and the technology faculty also take postdocs. Applicants who already received this grant, or who qualify for the Research Council of Norway’s scheme, are excluded.

The table below puts the rules side by side, because the faculties don’t all word them the same way.

SAM states the limit bluntly:

“Grants are not awarded to other groups.”

Source: OsloMet SAM research stay page

Postdocs deserve a note. Health Sciences wording we could read names PhD candidates only, while SAM and TKD include postdocs. If you’re a postdoc at a different faculty, ask your administration directly. For a postdoc route outside Norway, see our guide to the EPFL AI Center postdoctoral fellowships.

What Rules You Out

Several situations rule people out at most faculties. You can’t apply if you already received this grant, if you qualify for the Research Council of Norway’s mobility scheme, or if your stay would run too close to the end of your contract. Faculty pages state these rules in slightly different words.

  • Earlier grant: Health Sciences, SAM, TKD and LUI each exclude people who received the grant before.
  • Research Council of Norway route: if you can apply to the Council’s international mobility funding, you must use that scheme instead.
  • Contract timing: Health Sciences, SAM and LUI want the stay to end at least six months before your PhD or postdoc period ends. TKD excludes anyone with fewer than three months of employment left after the stay.
  • Completion-grant period: SAM and LUI don’t fund stays during an extension paid by a completion grant.
  • Wrong faculty: each call serves its own faculty’s candidates.

Eligible Nationalities: Does Citizenship Matter?

No official page we read sets a nationality requirement. The test is employment, not citizenship. You must hold an OsloMet PhD or postdoc position in a faculty that runs a call. The “all countries” label on this post means your passport doesn’t block you, not that anyone can apply.

In practice, nationality only shapes the logistics around the stay. A U.S. or Pakistani passport doesn’t change eligibility, but it can change which visa you need at the host country. Health Sciences and SAM both reimburse visa costs when you document them.

What Are the OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027 Deadlines?

Health Sciences takes applications by 31 January 2027 for stays starting between August and December 2027. SAM’s next deadline is 15 March 2027 for fall 2027 stays. The technology and education faculties don’t give a clean 2027 date in the pages we could read, so confirm those with your faculty office.

Why the Deadline Lines Don’t Always Match

TKD’s page lists 1 November as the deadline for 2027 stays and also says the call for 2027 stays opens in November 2026. Those lines don’t line up cleanly. We’d treat that date as unconfirmed and ask the faculty’s research administration before you plan around it.

The January date for Health Sciences comes from the faculty’s standing annual rule, not from a separate 2027 notice. Rules like this rarely change, but a faculty can revise them, so reread the call page before you submit.

Time Zone and Cut-Off Time

No faculty page we read publishes a cut-off time or a time zone. Oslo uses Central European Time in winter (UTC+1). That is 4 hours behind Pakistan Standard Time and 6 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time in January. Don’t rely on those conversions for a last-minute submission. Send everything well before the date.

What Does the Grant Pay For? Benefits and Funding

The grant reimburses extra costs of a research stay abroad. Health Sciences covers documented additional living costs up to NOK 25,000 per month, plus documented visa and tuition costs. SAM allows up to NOK 20,000 per month, capped at NOK 60,000 per stay, and also covers the cheapest travel option.

Funding Amounts at a Glance

OsloMet research stay grant funding caps in NOK Bar chart. Health Sciences allows up to NOK 25,000 per month and, at three months, a NOK 75,000 ceiling by simple multiplication. SAM allows up to NOK 20,000 per month with a NOK 60,000 cap per stay. Funding caps in NOK (2027 stays) Health Sciences, per month: NOK 25,000 SAM, per month: NOK 20,000 Health Sciences, 3 months (our math): NOK 75,000 SAM, cap per stay: NOK 60,000 Tuition and visa costs are reimbursed when documented. No fixed cap is published.
Funding caps for OsloMet research stays in 2027. Health Sciences and SAM figures come from the faculty pages. The NOK 75,000 bar is our own multiplication of the monthly cap by three months.

Read the caps as ceilings, not payments. You receive reimbursement for documented extra costs, so a stay in a cheaper city may cost less than the cap. Amounts are set in Norwegian kroner, and the pages we read give no dollar or euro equivalents.

A Sample Budget With Stated Assumptions

Here is a simple example for a three-month Health Sciences stay. At the full monthly cap, extra living costs reach NOK 75,000. Visa and tuition are reimbursed when documented, and they sit on top. This is our arithmetic from the published caps, not an official award figure.

Sample three-month Health Sciences budget
Budget lineRuleExample ceiling
Extra living costsUp to NOK 25,000 per monthNOK 75,000 (3 months)
Visa feesDocumented cost, no fixed cap publishedActual cost
Tuition feesDocumented cost, no fixed cap publishedActual cost
Family membersNo additional supportNOK 0

Assumptions: the maximum three-month stay, fully documented expenses, and no other funding. If another source such as Erasmus+ pays part of the stay, you can’t be paid twice for the same cost. SAM tells applicants to make sure the stay isn’t double-funded.

What the Grant Does Not Pay For

The grant doesn’t pay for work that belongs to your normal PhD duties. Health Sciences excludes data collection costs, and SAM excludes teaching, mandatory doctoral courses, data collection, conferences outside the host institution and family travel. Planning a visit around those activities puts your budget at risk.

Available Subjects: Which PhD Programs Are Covered?

OsloMet doesn’t publish a subject list for this grant. Eligibility follows your PhD program, so the real question is whether you’re enrolled in a participating faculty. The table below lists the programs we could confirm, matched to the research areas shown with this post.

PhD programs and research areas that fit
FacultyPrograms we could confirmResearch areas that fit
Health SciencesPhD in Health Sciences. PhD in Behaviour AnalysisHealth sciences, behavioral sciences, behavior analysis
SAMThe doctoral program at SAM (program names not listed on the page)Social sciences
TKDThe PENG and PINS PhD programsEngineering and technology, innovation and design
LUIThe LUI doctoral program, advertised as Educational Sciences for Teacher EducationEducation, international studies, development studies

Environmental, sustainability and interdisciplinary projects qualify only through the faculty that employs you. If your project crosses faculties, ask which call applies before you write anything.

Which Documents Do You Need?

Expect a short application, a budget and a letter from your host. Health Sciences caps the application at three pages and asks you to describe the research environment you’ll join. SAM and TKD add an invitation letter from the host and a supporting letter from your supervisor or personnel manager.

We could not open the full Health Sciences attachment list, so treat the table as a minimum. Read the current call, and ask phd-hv@oslomet.no if anything is unclear. Both pages are linked in the sources box below.

How Do You Apply? Application Procedure Step by Step

You apply through your own faculty, not through a central public portal. Confirm eligibility, secure a host invitation, write the plan and budget, then submit by your faculty’s route before the deadline. SAM and TKD use online forms. Health Sciences directs questions to its PhD administration at phd-hv@oslomet.no.

Application flowchart for an OsloMet research stay grant, from confirming eligibility to the post-stay report.
1
Confirm you’re eligible

Check that you hold an OsloMet PhD or postdoc position in the faculty running the call, that you haven’t received the grant before, and that you don’t qualify for the Research Council of Norway scheme.

2
Read your faculty’s call

Note the deadline, the form and the attachments. Don’t borrow a date from another faculty.

3
Agree a host with your supervisor

SAM advises choosing the host in consultation with your supervisor. Ask your administration whether OsloMet has an exchange or collaboration agreement with the host, because that can reduce tuition and ease housing.

4
Get the invitation letter

Ask the host for a letter that states the resources they’ll provide, any conditions, any tuition fees and the academic plan.

5
Write the plan and budget

Keep it within the page limit and tie every cost line to an eligible expense.

6
Submit and wait

SAM aims to answer within three weeks after the deadline. Plan travel and visa steps only after you have a decision.

How to Write the Three-Page Plan

A strong plan answers one question: why does this visit improve your thesis, and for whom? State the host group, the dates, the concrete activities, and what will exist afterward, such as a co-authored paper or a method you’ll bring back. Keep it specific. Three pages leaves no room for general praise of the host.

  • Name the host institution, country and exact period.
  • Explain the academic purpose and why this group is the right one.
  • List activities SAM names as typical: supervision, collaborative publishing, seminars and other academic work at the host.
  • Describe expected outcomes for you and for OsloMet.

If you’re still writing statements for PhD positions, our guide on a winning motivation letter covers structure and tone.

Working Hours and Payment: When Does the Money Arrive?

There are no separate working hours for this grant, because it isn’t a job. The official wording describes reimbursement of additional costs, which points to your regular employment continuing during the stay. Agree your work plan, leave and salary arrangements with your supervisor and line manager before you submit.

Payment follows a reimburse-and-document pattern. SAM says the awarded amount, as set in your budget, may be paid as an advance before the stay. Afterward you document travel and extra costs to the faculty administration, and any excess is repaid through payroll deductions. Health Sciences also expects the costs to appear in a travel expense claim after the stay.

After the Stay: Expense Claim and Report

SAM requires a short outcomes report within two months after you return. Keep every receipt from the first day, because the expense claim must document travel and extra costs, and anything overpaid comes back through payroll deductions. Your faculty administration can explain which receipts count.

How Are Applications Decided?

SAM publishes the most detail. Administrators review applications after each deadline and aim to respond within three weeks. Only complete applications that meet every formal requirement are considered, and a lottery decides if requests exceed the money. The other faculty pages we read don’t describe scoring criteria.

That has a practical meaning. There’s no published rubric to optimize against, so what you control is completeness, fit with the grant’s purpose and a budget that matches eligible costs.

International Applicant Guidance

If you don’t work at OsloMet yet, this grant isn’t your entry point. Nationality doesn’t block you, but employment does. The practical route is to apply for an advertised OsloMet PhD fellow position, because those job ads mention research-stay funding as an option once you’re hired. Being hired doesn’t guarantee a grant.

Check the vacancies section of the OsloMet website for current positions. For other funded doctoral routes, compare our guide to the Lucerne PhD scholarship.

For U.S. Applicants

U.S. citizens face the same rules as everyone else: an OsloMet contract and an eligible faculty. Citizenship matters only for the stay itself. If your host is in the United States, budget for visa and tuition costs, which are reimbursed only when documented. The grants are set in Norwegian kroner, so dollar values will move.

For Pakistani Applicants

Pakistani citizens aren’t excluded from this grant, and no Pakistan-specific rule appears on the pages we read. The same gate applies: you need an OsloMet PhD or postdoc position first. If you’re still applying for PhD positions, treat the job ad as your real application and read its degree, English-test and document rules carefully.

Degree attestation, equivalence and language-test requirements, where they apply, belong to the PhD vacancy, not to this grant.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

The most common mistake is treating this as an open scholarship. The second is copying one faculty’s deadline onto another. Others include budgeting for family, planning data collection inside the stay, and leaving less than six months before your contract ends. Each one can make an application ineligible.

Mistake

Applying from outside OsloMet

There is no public form for outsiders. Employment comes first.

Mistake

Using the wrong deadline

Health Sciences, SAM, TKD and LUI each set their own dates.

Mistake

Budgeting family costs

Health Sciences and SAM give no extra support for family members.

Mistake

Counting data collection

Both faculties exclude data collection from eligible costs.

Verification Note: What We Checked and What Conflicts

We checked the OsloMet staff pages on 2 November 2026 and compared them with each other. Most facts matched, and several items conflict or remain unverified. Where sources disagree, we explain the conflict below and point to the page that controls your faculty. Our editorial policy describes how we handle corrections.

Conflicts and open items
  • Two versions of one page. The URL of the Health Sciences call shows Health Sciences rules in one copy (31 August and 31 January rounds, up to NOK 25,000 per month) and an older institution-wide call in another (NOK 200,000 cap, NOK 250,000 with family, rolling submissions). We followed the faculty rules and flagged the older text.
  • TKD date. The 1 November line and the November 2026 call-opening line don’t agree.
  • SAM amounts. The 2027 deadlines appear in the current listing, while the full page text we could open still carries 2026 dates. Amounts may be unchanged, but confirm them.
  • Not verified: Health Sciences postdoc eligibility, TKD and LUI amounts and stay lengths, whether Health Sciences covers travel tickets, and any cut-off time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for the OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027?

Only people who already work at OsloMet can apply. At the Faculty of Health Sciences, that means employed PhD candidates admitted to the Health Sciences or Behaviour Analysis program. SAM and the technology faculty also take postdocs. Outside students and applicants without an OsloMet contract can’t use this grant, and each faculty sets its own rules, so read your faculty’s call.

What is the deadline for the OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027?

The Faculty of Health Sciences accepts applications by 31 January 2027 for stays starting between August and December 2027. SAM’s next deadline is 15 March 2027 for fall 2027 stays. The pages we read don’t publish a cut-off time or time zone, so submit well before the date and confirm timing with your faculty office.

How much money does the OsloMet research stay grant give?

At the Faculty of Health Sciences, the grant covers documented extra living costs of up to NOK 25,000 per month, plus documented visa and tuition costs. SAM allows up to NOK 20,000 per month and NOK 60,000 in total per stay. These are reimbursements of real extra costs, so keep receipts and don’t treat the cap as a fixed stipend.

How long can the research stay last?

Health Sciences and SAM both fund stays of one to three months. Longer stays are possible at Health Sciences, but you must pay for the extra time from other sources. The stay must also end at least six months before your PhD or postdoc period ends, and stays during a completion-grant extension aren’t funded.

Can international students apply from outside OsloMet?

No. This isn’t an admission scholarship, and it doesn’t pay for a degree at OsloMet. Nationality isn’t the test. An OsloMet employment contract and PhD enrollment are. If you want access, apply for an advertised OsloMet PhD fellow position first, since those job ads mention the option to apply for research-stay funding.

Which documents do I need for the application?

Expect a short application of up to three pages, a budget, and a description of your host research environment. SAM asks for an invitation letter and a signed recommendation from your personnel manager, while TKD asks for a supervisor’s support letter and an invitation. Health Sciences may list more attachments, so read the current call before you start writing.

Does the grant cover family members?

No. Health Sciences and SAM both state that they give no additional support for accompanying family members. Plan your budget as a single-traveler budget. An older institution-wide version of the call had a higher cap for stays with family, so check which rules apply to your faculty before you assume anything.

How and when is the money paid?

SAM says the awarded amount may be paid as an advance before the stay. After you return, you document your expenses in a travel expense claim, and any overpaid amount is repaid through payroll deductions. SAM also requires a short outcomes report within two months. Health Sciences likewise expects expense documentation after the stay.

What happens if there are more applications than funds?

SAM says it holds a lottery when applications exceed the available funding, but only among applications that meet every formal requirement. The other faculty pages we read don’t publish a tie-break method. Complete forms and attachments matter, because incomplete applications aren’t considered.
