GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 in UK (Fully Funded)

1. What Is the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027?

The GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 is a paid, three-month, in-person program in London run by the Centre for the Governance of AI. Fellows work from 7 June to 27 August 2027 and receive a £14,000 salary plus travel support. The official call lists no nationality limit. Applications close at 23:59 GMT on Sunday, 22 November 2026.

GovAI is a research organization that helps governments, companies and other institutions make better decisions about advanced AI. The summer cohort is a short, structured way into that field. You do not need to be a lawyer or a computer scientist. The call asks for strong reasoning, clear writing and a real interest in AI governance, and it welcomes people from government, academia, industry, startups, media and civil society.

Here is the part many applicants miss. This is a paid job-style fellowship, not a degree scholarship. Nobody pays tuition, nobody gets a university place, and the selection steps look more like a hiring process than an admissions review. That changes how you prepare, and it is why this guide spends more time on the work test and the interview than on transcripts.

Application Deadline: 23 November 2026 at 4:59 AM PKT

3. Research Track or Applied Track: Which One Fits You?

There are two tracks with the same dates, salary and deadline. The difference is the work. Research fellows write their own research output. Applied fellows deliver a project that is not research. Choosing the wrong track is the easiest way to weaken an otherwise good application.

Research Track

Fellows pick a topic, are paired with a supervisor and spend the first two weeks exploring the AI governance field before settling on a proposal. The output can be a report, white paper, journal article, op-ed or blog post. GovAI says this track suits people who want roles where producing or using research and policy analysis is a main duty. See the official Research Track page.

Applied Track

Fellows work on projects pitched by GovAI or partner organizations, for example the UK’s AI Security Institute, Far.AI and the Oxford Martin School AI Governance Initiative. Past projects include organizing an event series, project managing policy engagement and designing an upskilling program for policymakers. GovAI notes that the Research Track is the better fit if you want to do policy-focused research. See the official Applied Track page.

4. Who Can Apply? Eligible Nationalities

The official call does not restrict applications by nationality. That is why this fellowship is open to applicants worldwide, but it is not the same as a guaranteed visa. GovAI says it can sponsor temporary work visas, and some candidates may face background checks and sanctions screening.

For International Applicants

You can apply from any country. If you need a visa, GovAI says you must remain in your country of visa application while the visa is being processed. Plan for that. If you would be away from a job or course for the wait, tell your employer or school early. Ask fellowships@governance.ai if you need a decision by a certain date, because visa timing can be tight between a March decision and a June start.

For Pakistani Applicants

The call has no Pakistan-specific rule, so you apply on the same terms as everyone else. The practical points are time and paperwork. The deadline falls at 4:59 AM PKT on Monday, November 23, so treat Sunday evening in Pakistan as your real cutoff. A UK work visa is likely to be part of any offer, but GovAI has not published the exact visa route, so ask the team which one applies to you. Keep your passport valid beyond August 2027.

For U.S. Applicants

You can apply to the London fellowship, and the form is the same. GovAI also runs a separate DC Summer Fellowship 2027 in Washington, DC with its own page, dates and stipend. Read that page before you choose, because the two programs are not interchangeable. This guide covers the UK program only.

5. Eligibility Criteria and Selection Strengths

GovAI sets no fixed eligibility requirements. It says no specific requirements apply and no strict degree is required. What it does publish is four strengths it looks for, or signs you can develop them. Those four are your real eligibility test.

What GovAI looks for and how to show it
StrengthWhat GovAI saysHow to show it
Quality of workClear, insightful, even-handed workA short sample, project or writing you can explain in plain words
Relevant expertiseSkills useful for AI governance, in many formsName the specific skill and where you used it
JudgmentPrioritizing directions and judging feasibilityExplain what you chose not to do and why
Team fitOpenness to feedback, honesty, comfort with uncertaintyGive one example of changing your mind after feedback

Who should think twice? Someone who cannot be in London for the full window, since the role is full-time and in person. Someone who wants a pure academic credential. And someone with no interest in the policy side of AI, because team fit includes a serious interest in contributing to AI governance.

English Language Requirements

Neither track page lists an English test score or waiver. Written English still matters, since the written application and work test are judged on clear writing. Re-check the official page right before you apply in case the call is updated.

Re-check before you submit

Requirements can change after a guide is published. Open the official Research Track or Applied Track page on the day you apply and confirm the deadline, language expectations and form link.

6. Which Fields and Backgrounds Fit?

GovAI lists public policy, political science, computer science, economics, biosecurity, cybersecurity, China studies and risk management as relevant areas for the Research Track, and says the list is not complete. For the Applied Track it names communications, policy, issue advocacy, events, research management, program management, operations and fundraising.

There is no subject list or degree level to pick, because this is not a degree program. Your field matters less than whether you can show judgment and clear thinking in it. A cybersecurity analyst, a journalist and a program manager can all be strong, on different tracks.

7. What Does the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 Pay and Cover?

Fellows receive a £14,000 salary for the three months plus support for traveling to London. GovAI also provides lunch on weekdays and a desk in its London office. Visa sponsorship is available for temporary work visas.

What £14,000 Means Week by Week

This is my own arithmetic, not an official figure. The fellowship window from 7 June to 27 August 2027 is 82 days, about 11.7 weeks. £14,000 over that period is roughly £1,195 a week, or about £4,667 for each of the three months. GovAI does not say whether this is before or after tax, so confirm that in your offer letter.

Before you accept, price your own costs: rent in London, local transport, any visa fee, health insurance and the cost of leaving your current home. GovAI covers none of these as far as the call says. That is the honest limit of the phrase “fully funded” here.

8. Work Hours, Location and Payment

The fellowship is full-time and in person at GovAI’s London office for the whole window. It is a salaried role, so you work a normal full-time week rather than a flexible study schedule. GovAI has not published how or when the salary is paid, so that detail is not officially confirmed.

Remote Work for Caregivers

If you have children or other caring responsibilities, you can work remotely up to two days a week while staying full-time on the full salary. You do not need to mention this in your application. If you receive an offer, GovAI says you agree the arrangement then.

Senior professionals or academics who cannot meet the full-time, in-person terms can email the team. GovAI says it can sometimes make accommodations for exceptional profiles. Use the subject line the official page asks for, which names the track, and attach your CV.

9. GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 Deadlines and Key Dates

The application deadline is 23:59 UK time (GMT) on Sunday, 22 November 2026. After that, GovAI expects the work test in January, interviews in February and decisions in March. The fellowship itself starts on 7 June 2027.

10. Required Documents

GovAI does not publish a document checklist. The official requirement is a written application through its online form, followed by tests and references. Everything below the first line is preparation advice, not a confirmed requirement.

Confirmed by GovAI: a written application, an automated reasoning assessment if you are selected, a paid work test, and reference checks. Not officially confirmed: whether the form asks for a CV upload, writing sample or statement. Keep a current CV and the contact details of two referees ready so that February reference checks do not delay you.

No attestation, translation or degree certificate is mentioned. If a document is requested later, you will see it in the form or in an email from GovAI. For help with the writing itself, read my guide on a winning motivation letter.

11. How to Apply for the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027, Step by Step

You apply online through GovAI’s official form, linked from each track page. The eight steps below follow GovAI’s published process and add preparation advice in plain words. The flowchart shows the same path.

1
Choose your track.

Pick the Research Track if you want to produce your own policy or technical research. Pick the Applied Track if you want to run a project in operations, communications, events, program management or policy engagement.

2
Check the selection criteria.

GovAI scores quality of work, relevant expertise, judgment and team fit. Read the four criteria on your track page and write one honest example of each before you open the form.

3
Prepare your CV and written answers.

Draft your answers in a separate document first so you can edit calmly. The call does not publish the form questions, so keep a clean CV, a short project idea or work example, and the names of two people who can speak about your work.

4
Open the official form.

Use the Apply here button on the official track page, which leads to GovAI’s Airtable form. If the link ever fails, start from the official GovAI Opportunities page and open the Summer Fellowship 2027 listing.

5
Complete every field carefully.

Answer the exact question asked, keep claims specific and check names, dates and email addresses. A tidy, checkable application is easier to score than a long one.

6
Submit before the deadline.

The deadline is 23:59 UK time (GMT) on Sunday, November 22, 2026. That is 4:59 AM on Monday, November 23 in Pakistan. Submit at least one day early to avoid upload or connection problems.

7
Complete the assessment and work test.

Selected candidates take a short automated abstract reasoning test of about 20 minutes. GovAI then invites a smaller group to a paid, remote work test in January.

8
Interview, references, decision.

The third round in February is a remote interview plus reference checks. GovAI expects to send final decisions in March.

I could not see the form fields from outside the form, so I have not listed its questions. Read each question on screen before you answer.

12. Is It Really Fully Funded?

It is paid, not fully funded in the tuition-scholarship sense. GovAI pays a £14,000 salary and supports travel to London, plus weekday lunch and a desk. It does not say it covers rent, visa fees, insurance or other living costs, so the label “fully funded” in the title is shorthand for a paid fellowship.

What is covered and what to budget yourself
ItemCovered by GovAI?
SalaryYes, £14,000
Travel to LondonSupported; amount not published
Weekday lunch and deskYes
Temporary work visa sponsorshipAvailable; visa fees not stated
Rent and daily living in LondonNot stated; budget from your salary

13. How Selection Works and Your Chances

Selection has three rounds that get progressively more practical. GovAI has not published how many people apply or how many are accepted, so no acceptance rate can be stated. What you can control is how well you show the four strengths in each round.

What Each Round Tests

Round one reads your written application and, if you pass, gives you an automated abstract reasoning test of about 20 minutes. Round two is a paid, remote work test in January, which shows how you actually work. Round three in February is a remote interview plus reference checks. Decisions are expected in March.

The paid work test is the stage most applicants underestimate. Treat it like a short job task: read the brief twice, state your assumptions, write clearly and submit on time. Even-handed, clearly reasoned work scores better than bold claims.

14. Visa and Next Steps After an Offer

GovAI says it can sponsor temporary work visas. If you need one, you must stay in your country of application while it is processed. Accept an offer only after you understand the visa route, the start date and what the salary covers.

“We are able to sponsor temporary work visas.”

Source: GovAI Research Track page

After an offer, confirm in writing: the salary and payment dates, the travel support amount, the remote-work arrangement if you are a caregiver, the visa steps and your start date. Questions go to fellowships@governance.ai.

15. Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

Most weak applications fail for simple reasons, not lack of talent. Check yourself against these before you submit.

Avoid these
  • Applying to the wrong track, such as a communications professional choosing Research.
  • Reading the deadline as your local time instead of 23:59 GMT.
  • Assuming “fully funded” covers London rent and visa costs.
  • Skipping the work test preparation because the form felt easy.
  • Writing about passion for AI instead of showing a specific skill or judgment call.

One more misconception: this is not a scholarship application plus a separate admission application. There is one application and no university place involved.

16. Official Sources and Verification Note

Verification note

I checked both official track pages on November 3, 2026. Both state the same deadline, dates and salary. The pages carry an October 27, 2026 posting date. The application form fields, the travel support amount and the payment schedule were not visible, so they are marked not officially confirmed. Facts can change, so confirm them on GovAI’s site before you apply.

17. FAQ

What is the deadline for the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027?

The deadline is 23:59 UK time (GMT) on Sunday, November 22, 2026. In Pakistan that is 4:59 AM on Monday, November 23, and in U.S. Eastern Time it is 6:59 PM on Sunday, November 22. Submit early, because GovAI does not describe any grace period.

How much does the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 pay?

GovAI states a salary of £14,000 for the three-month fellowship, plus support for traveling to London. Fellows also get lunch on weekdays and a desk in the London office. GovAI does not publish the travel amount or the payment schedule, so ask before you accept an offer.

Can international students and non-UK citizens apply?

Yes. The official call lists no nationality restriction, and GovAI says it can sponsor temporary work visas. Applicants who need a visa must remain in the country where they apply while the visa is processed. GovAI may also run background checks and sanctions screening.

Do I need a degree to apply?

No. GovAI says there are no specific requirements and no strict degree requirements. It expects the strongest candidates to have relevant graduate study, research experience or professional experience, but a good application can come from government, industry, civil society, media or startups.

What is the difference between the Research Track and the Applied Track?

Research Track fellows carry out their own research project and may produce a report, paper, op-ed or blog post. Applied Track fellows work on non-research projects pitched by GovAI or partner organizations, such as events, communications, operations or program management. Both run in London on the same dates.

Is the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 remote?

No. GovAI describes it as a full-time, in-person role in its London office. The only stated flexibility is for people with children or other caring responsibilities, who can work remotely up to two days a week while staying full-time on the full salary.

How many stages are in the selection process?

There are three. First comes a written application and, if selected, a roughly 20-minute automated abstract reasoning assessment. Second is a paid remote work test in January. Third is a remote interview and reference checks in February. Final decisions are expected in March.

Is the GovAI Summer Fellowship 2027 really fully funded?

It is a paid fellowship, not a tuition scholarship. You receive a £14,000 salary and travel support, but GovAI does not say that it covers all London living costs, visa fees or insurance. Treat the title as a funding label and budget from the written offer.
