EMU student assistantships are paid campus jobs at Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, North Cyprus. Any enrolled student with a GPA above 2.0 can apply, and units announce openings at the start of each semester. Pay is a monthly stipend based on hourly rates. EMU sets no single deadline.
EMU’s official page gives only a few lines on this topic. Its regulations add detail for postgraduate research assistants. This guide shows what EMU confirms, what the regulation adds, and what you should ask the hiring unit before you plan around EMU student assistantships.
No official deadline. EMU does not publish one annual date for student assistantships. Units usually announce vacancies at the beginning of each semester, and postgraduate research assistant dates come from the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research.

1. What Are EMU Student Assistantships?
EMU student assistantships are paid part-time roles inside Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, North Cyprus. Students work in faculties or administrative departments and receive a monthly stipend based on hourly rates. The role appears on EMU’s scholarship page, but it works more like a campus job than a tuition award.
EMU’s own text on the undergraduate scholarships page covers the topic in a few lines. It confirms that positions exist across the university, that students of any kind can use them, and that vacancies tend to appear when a semester begins. It does not give a pay rate, weekly hours, or an application form.
The regulations fill part of that gap, but only for postgraduate research assistants. That is why this guide separates two routes and labels what EMU confirms, what its regulation adds, and what you should still ask the hiring unit.
One more thing to keep straight. EMU also offers awards that cover tuition. The All-inclusive Scholarship, for example, goes to undergraduate applicants in the top 1% of secondary school graduates in their home country and covers tuition, a double dorm room, and three meals a day, according to the same scholarship page. An assistantship is not that kind of award.

2. What Are the Key Numbers?
These figures come from EMU’s scholarship page and its research assistant regulation. The student assistantship itself has one published number, the GPA floor. Hours and pay figures belong to postgraduate research assistants, so read them as a separate track and not as a promise for every campus job.
GPA floor for student assistants
Weekly minimum, Category E research assistants
Weekly minimum, Category D research assistants
Weekly minimum, Categories A to C
Monthly cap for Category E assistants placed as student assistants
Pay multiples of TRNC net minimum wage, Categories A, B, C
Two more numbers matter for planning. Master’s research assistants can hold an appointment for at most 6 semesters, and doctoral students for at most 12, counted from the first semester of coursework, according to the research assistant regulation. Postgraduate scholarships run 3 semesters for non-thesis master’s programs, 4 for thesis programs, and 10 for PhD programs under the student scholarship regulation.
3. Scholarship or Campus Job: Which Route Fits You?
Student assistantships and research assistantships look alike but follow different rules. The first is open to any enrolled student above a 2.0 GPA. The second is for postgraduate students and follows a detailed regulation with job categories, minimum hours, and fixed pay multiples. Choose the route that matches your degree level.
| Route | Who it fits | Weekly hours | Pay | When to apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student assistantship | Any enrolled student with a GPA above 2.0 | Not published | Monthly stipend based on hourly rates | Usually announced at the start of each semester |
| Research assistant, Categories A to C | Full-time postgraduate students (A and B are doctoral) | At least 20 | 1.05, 0.84, and 0.63 times TRNC net minimum wage | Start of each semester, via your department |
| Research assistant, Category D | Part-time research assistants in postgraduate programs | At least 10 | Half of Category C | Start of each semester, via your department |
| Research assistant, Category E | Postgraduate students with a 100% scholarship | At least 6 | No separate scholarship | Follows the postgraduate scholarship application |
The pay column is the part many applicants miss. A general student assistantship adds income but, as EMU words it, no tuition support. Category E is the other extreme. The regulation says those assistants receive no separate payment, because the 100% scholarship is the benefit. You can read both rules on the scholarship page and in the regulation.
Most international undergraduates meet EMU scholarships in another form. The scholarship page says a large portion of international students hold 60% and 77% awards, decided from academic performance and program choice when you apply online. If tuition is your main worry, start there and treat an assistantship as extra income. If you are also comparing other North Cyprus options, our guide to the Near East University scholarship is a useful side-by-side.
4. Who Is Eligible for EMU Student Assistantships?
You qualify for a student assistantship if you are currently enrolled at EMU and your GPA is above 2.0. EMU states the positions are open to all students. For research assistantships, you must be a full-time postgraduate student with a higher CGPA and a passing oral or written exam, as the regulation describes.
“They are open to all students.” Source: EMU Undergraduate Scholarships
That one sentence carries more weight than it looks. It sets no cap by degree level and no list of eligible countries. The only academic condition on the page is the GPA, so run your own numbers first. If your university grades on a percentage or a different scale, our CGPA calculator gives you a quick 4.0-scale estimate to compare against EMU’s rule.
Eligible Nationalities
EMU names no nationality restriction for student assistants. Your nationality affects admission and fees, not the assistantship rule itself. The postgraduate scholarship page adds that tuition scholarship opportunities exist for “new students from Turkey and other international students” in PhD and master’s programs, per the postgraduate scholarships page.
| Group | Student assistantship | Research assistantship and postgraduate scholarship |
|---|---|---|
| International students | Open once enrolled; no nationality limit stated | Scholarship opportunities listed for new international students |
| Turkish citizens | Open once enrolled | Scholarship opportunities listed for new students from Turkey |
| TRNC citizens | Open once enrolled | Same regulation applies; check the Institute for any local conditions |
Eligibility Decision Table
| Your situation | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Enrolled at EMU, GPA above 2.0 | You meet the stated student assistant rule | Watch for openings at the start of the semester |
| Enrolled at EMU, GPA exactly 2.00 or lower | You do not meet the wording “above 2.0” | Raise your GPA, or ask a unit whether it makes an exception |
| Admitted but not yet registered | EMU’s text describes assistantships for current students | Register first, then apply |
| Not yet admitted | The pages we checked show no assistantship option in the admission form | Apply for admission through the EMU online application |
| New master’s or PhD student wanting a research role | You need a full-time registration, a high CGPA, and a passing exam | Apply to your department in the window the Institute announces |
| Postgraduate student with a 100% scholarship | The regulation appoints you as a Category E research assistant | Plan for at least 6 hours of unit work each week |
5. Which Subjects and Units Offer Assistantships?
EMU does not publish a list of assistantship vacancies by subject. It says positions exist in various faculties and administrative departments, and each unit decides its own needs. The table below shows EMU’s faculties and schools so you can see where an opening could appear in your field of study.
| Faculty or school | Departments named on EMU’s site | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Business and Economics | Business Administration, Economics, Banking and Finance, Political Science and International Relations | Check each department notice |
| Computer and Information Sciences | Listed as one faculty | Roles depend on lab and course needs |
| Engineering | Civil, Computer, Electrical and Electronic, Industrial, Mechanical | Labs often need support during semesters |
| Arts and Sciences | Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Translation and Interpretation, Turkish Language and Literature, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences | Wide range of units |
| Law, Architecture, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Tourism | Architecture also lists Interior Architecture | Each faculty runs its own hiring |
| Communication and Media Studies | Cinema and Television, New Media and Journalism, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design, Public Relations and Advertising | Studio and lab roles may exist |
| Education | Computer Education and Instructional Technology, Elementary Education, Foreign Language Education, Mathematics and Science Education, Educational Sciences, Special Education, Fine Arts Education, Turkish and Social Sciences Education | Check department boards |
| Health Sciences | Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Nursing, Health Management, Paramedics, Midwifery, Exercise and Sports Sciences | Check department boards |
| Schools | Computing and Technology, Information Technologies, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Health Services | Separate from the faculties |
The faculty names come from EMU’s academics section. A listing there does not mean a vacancy exists, so treat the table as a map. Administrative departments also appear in EMU’s structure, such as the Library and Documentation Directorate and the Registrar’s Office Directorate, but the scholarship page does not say which of them hire students.
6. What Benefits Come With the Role?
The confirmed benefit for student assistants is a monthly stipend based on hourly rates. Research assistants can receive more, including a monthly scholarship and, in some categories, a tuition exemption. Category E assistants get no separate stipend because their reward is the 100% postgraduate scholarship itself.
| Route | What EMU confirms | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Student assistantship | Monthly stipend based on hourly rates | Rate, monthly total, tuition support |
| Research assistant, doctoral Categories A to C | Exemption from educational fees for courses and thesis registration, plus a monthly scholarship | Current minimum wage figure |
| Research assistant, Category D | Half of the educational fees waived for a semester, plus half of the Category C scholarship | Whether student activity fund fees apply (the regulation excludes them) |
| Research assistant, Category E | A 100% postgraduate scholarship and appointment duties | Any separate pay for the 6 weekly hours |
Beyond money, a unit job puts you near faculty and staff who can write references and explain how the department works. That is our reading of the setup, not a claim EMU makes. The facts above come from the research assistant regulation and the scholarship page.
7. What Are the Working Hours and Payment Rules?
EMU publishes weekly hours and pay rules for postgraduate research assistants, not for general student assistants. Categories A to C work at least 20 hours a week, Category D at least 10, and Category E at least 6. Pay is a multiple of the TRNC net minimum wage, so it moves when that wage changes.
Weekly Hours by Category
| Category | Who holds it | Minimum weekly hours |
|---|---|---|
| A | Full-time doctoral students who passed the qualifying exam | 20 |
| B | Full-time doctoral students who have not yet passed it | 20 |
| C | Full-time postgraduate students | 20 |
| D | Part-time postgraduate research assistants | 10 |
| E | Postgraduate students with a 100% scholarship | 6 |
Research assistants must be present in their unit during working hours, and the unit is expected to spread tasks fairly. Typical duties include labs and tutorials, grading homework and quizzes, exam invigilation, and help with events or accreditation work, as listed in Article 7 of the regulation. Category A assistants can also deliver assigned courses.
Pay Rates by Category
| Category | Monthly scholarship | Tuition effect |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1.05 times the TRNC net minimum wage | Doctoral students exempt from educational fees |
| B | 0.84 times the TRNC net minimum wage | Doctoral students exempt from educational fees |
| C | 0.63 times the TRNC net minimum wage | Doctoral students exempt from educational fees |
| D | Half of the Category C amount | Half of educational fees exempt |
| E | None separately | Covered by the 100% scholarship |
Worked Example With Stand-In Numbers
EMU’s pages we checked do not print the current TRNC net minimum wage, so we cannot give you a real monthly figure. The table below uses a stand-in wage of 100 units to show how the categories compare. These are not dollars or liras.
| Category | Multiple | Monthly amount in units |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1.05 | 105 |
| B | 0.84 | 84 |
| C | 0.63 | 63 |
| D | 0.315 | 31.5 |
| E | None | 0 separate |

One detail needs a direct question to EMU. The regulation says Category E assistants get no separate scholarship, yet it also says they may be placed as student assistants in any department, up to 60 hours a month. At roughly 4.3 weeks per month, that cap is about 14 hours a week, and it covers more than the 6-hour minimum. The text does not say how any extra hours are paid, so ask the Institute before you agree to them.

8. Which Documents Should You Prepare?
EMU does not publish a document checklist for student assistantships. The one stated requirement is that you are a student with a GPA above 2.0. Research assistants send information and documents to their department, so the exact list can vary. Use the two lists below to prepare before an opening appears.
Confirmed Requirements
- Proof that you are a current EMU student with a GPA above 2.0, since the scholarship page states that rule.
- For research assistants, the information and documents your department requests during the announced dates, as Article 9 of the regulation requires.
- For research assistants, evidence of the CGPA the regulation sets and readiness for an oral or written exam.
- Language ability in the language your program uses, which the regulation lists as a minimum qualification.
Documents to Keep Ready (Our Practical List)
This list is our suggestion, not an EMU requirement. Units differ, so treat it as a starting kit.
- A current transcript that shows your GPA.
- Your student ID or enrollment confirmation.
- A one-page CV with any lab, tutoring, or office experience.
- A weekly class timetable so you can show your free hours.
- A short message explaining why you fit the unit. Our guide on writing a motivation letter helps you keep it clear and specific.
- A copy of your passport and residence permit, if the unit asks for them.
9. How Do You Apply for EMU Student Assistantships?
Apply for EMU student assistantships by watching for openings at the start of each semester, then applying through the unit that posts the role. Postgraduate research assistants apply to their department on dates the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research announces. The pages we checked show no single central form for general student assistants.
Check your current transcript. EMU’s stated rule for student assistants is a GPA above 2.0, and exactly 2.00 does not meet the wording.
EMU says vacancies are usually announced at the beginning of each semester. Follow the university announcements page and your own faculty or department noticeboard.
The pages we checked show no single central form for general student assistants. Follow the instructions in the unit’s notice, and ask the unit about hours, pay rate, and start date.
Research assistant applications go to the relevant department on dates the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research announces. A graduate studies committee selects candidates and announces the criteria at least a week ahead.
For research assistants, the appointment letter states the duration, duties, working hours, and performance expectations. Keep a copy, and ask about anything that looks different from this guide.
Student Assistant Route
Start with the EMU announcements page and the notice boards of your faculty and the offices you use most. Since each unit sets its own process, a short polite email to the unit before the semester begins is reasonable. Ask whether a role is planned, what the hours and rate are, and who makes the decision.
Research Assistant Route
Candidates apply to the relevant department at the start of each semester. A graduate studies committee in the department selects them, and the department chair and dean or director then send the list to the Institute and the Rector’s Office for approval. Appointments run one semester at a time, and the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs signs the appointment letter, according to the regulation.
First-time postgraduate students who want the 100% scholarship, which leads to Category E, apply to the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research and are evaluated by the academic units. The scholarship regulation states that students deemed suitable for 100% are appointed as “Category E Research Assistants”.
10. What Is the Application Deadline?
EMU has no universal annual deadline for student assistantships. Openings appear at the start of each semester, and each unit sets its own window. Check announcements early in the semester, and ask the unit directly if a role has not been posted yet. Because no date exists, no time zone conversion applies.
| Item | Timing | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Student assistantship | Vacancies usually announced at the start of each semester | EMU |
| Research assistant | Applications at the start of each semester, on dates the Institute announces | EMU regulation |
| All-inclusive Scholarship (separate award) | Evaluated at the end of January; September intake only | EMU |
| Full scholarship types 7 and 3 (separate awards) | Committee reviews 30 days and 60 days before the semester begins | EMU |
The last two rows are different awards, and we include them so you do not confuse their dates with assistantship timing. To keep several dates in one place, use our scholarship deadline tracker.
11. International Applicant Guidance
International students can use EMU student assistantships once they are enrolled. EMU names no nationality limit, but its page does not discuss work permits or residence rules, so confirm those with the university before you accept a role. Language also matters, because research assistants need proficiency in their program’s language.
- Admission comes first. Undergraduate applications are accepted twice a year, according to the undergraduate admission page. Graduate requirements sit on the graduate admission page. If you are still deciding on a degree, our guide on how to study abroad after 12th grade covers the early planning steps.
- Check the program language. International candidates for Turkish-medium programs must submit proof of Turkish level in a recognized exam, per EMU’s Turkish programs page.
- Ask about permits. Contact the International Promotion Office or the Registrar’s Office and ask whether student work needs any approval for your nationality.
- Get hours and pay in writing. A unit’s message or an appointment letter protects you if the figures differ from what you expected.
12. For U.S. Applicants
EMU’s published text sets no rule that applies only to U.S. citizens or U.S. residents. The GPA rule is easy to check, because the regulation measures CGPA out of 4.00, the same scale most U.S. transcripts use. The main task for you is confirming how EMU records your prior grades once you are admitted.
If you plan to transfer credits home later, talk to your home school’s registrar before you commit to working hours that might clash with course loads. EMU’s page does not address credit transfer, so we leave that question open.
13. For Pakistani Applicants
EMU lists no Pakistan-specific condition for student assistantships. What changes for Pakistani applicants is mostly how grades translate. Many universities in Pakistan report CGPA on a 4.0 scale, which lines up with EMU’s rule, but percentage-based systems need a conversion. Our CGPA calculator can give you a fast estimate.
After admission, ask EMU’s registrar how your transcript is recorded, then use the official GPA on your EMU record, not an estimate. Keep your passport and residence documents current, and ask the International Promotion Office about work rules for your nationality, because the assistantship text does not cover them.
14. What Mistakes Should You Avoid?
Most mistakes come from treating an assistantship like a scholarship. EMU describes it as a position with a stipend, not a tuition waiver. Avoid assumptions about pay, hours, and dates, and verify each one with the unit before you plan your budget around it.
- Assuming it pays tuition. The official text lists a stipend only.
- Applying before enrollment. EMU describes assistantships for current students.
- Missing the semester start. Vacancies are usually announced at the beginning of each semester, so late discovery means a long wait.
- Expecting a stipend as Category E. The regulation says there is no separate payment for that category.
- Trusting third-party figures. Some sites label this as fully funded or print monthly amounts. EMU’s own page does neither.
15. What Did We Verify, and Where Do Sources Disagree?
On November 1, 2026, we reviewed EMU’s undergraduate scholarships page, its student scholarship regulation, its research assistant regulation, and its postgraduate scholarship page. Where wording differs, this guide follows the regulation. The English regulation says the Turkish version governs in a disagreement, so confirm money rules with EMU.
This guide rests on published EMU documents. We have not confirmed current vacancies, hourly rates, or weekly hours for general student assistants with an EMU unit. Treat those three items as open until a unit states them.
| Topic | Scholarships page says | Regulation says | What to follow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siblings beyond the first two | 75% discount | 50% discount | Ask EMU, since the regulation is the controlling text |
| High Honor Award | Paid as multiples of the gross minimum wage | Scholarship of 20%, 15%, or 10% of tuition by rank | The 2025 regulation text, confirmed with EMU |
| Tuition fee waiver evaluation | Cites a deadline of 3 January 2024 | No fixed date in the section we read | Treat the page date as old |
These gaps do not change the assistantship rules, but they show that the scholarship page can lag behind the regulation. The sources behind them are the scholarship page and the scholarship regulation.
16. Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for EMU student assistantships?
Any enrolled EMU student with a GPA above 2.0 can apply. EMU says the positions are open to all students and names no nationality or degree-level limit. Because you must already be a student, admission comes first. Each unit then decides how it selects its assistants.
Is there a deadline for EMU student assistantships?
No. EMU publishes no single annual deadline for student assistantships. Units usually announce vacancies at the beginning of each semester, so your window opens when a unit posts a role. Dates for postgraduate research assistants come from the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research each semester.
How much do EMU student assistants get paid?
EMU states that the monthly stipend is based on hourly rates, but the pages we checked do not publish the rate or a monthly figure. Research assistant pay is set differently. Categories A, B, and C earn 1.05, 0.84, and 0.63 times the TRNC net minimum wage, and Category D earns half of Category C.
How many hours a week do EMU assistants work?
The student assistantship page gives no weekly hours. For postgraduate research assistants, the regulation sets a minimum of 20 hours for Categories A to C, 10 for Category D, and 6 for Category E. Category E assistants placed as student assistants cannot exceed 60 hours per month.
Does an EMU assistantship cover tuition?
Not for general student assistants, since EMU’s text lists a stipend only. Tuition support comes from separate scholarships. Doctoral research assistants in Categories A to C are exempt from educational fees, Category D gets a half exemption, and Category E assistants hold a 100% postgraduate scholarship.
Can international students apply for EMU student assistantships?
Yes, once they are enrolled at EMU. The official page says the positions are open to all students and lists no nationality rule. It does not discuss work or residence permits, so international students should ask the Registrar’s Office or the International Promotion Office before accepting a role.
Can I apply for an assistantship before I am admitted to EMU?
Not through anything EMU describes. Assistantships go to current students, so admission and enrollment come first. First-time postgraduate students who want a scholarship apply to the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research, and a 100% award leads to a Category E research assistant appointment.
What GPA do I need for an EMU assistantship?
Student assistants need a GPA above 2.0. Research assistants face a higher bar. Newly registered full-time candidates need a CGPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 plus a passing oral or written exam, and Category D can accept 2.50 to 3.00 when too few candidates qualify.
Is EMU in Turkey or North Cyprus?
EMU is in Famagusta, North Cyprus. Its published address lists via Mersin 10, Tรผrkiye, and we use Turkey as the filing label for this guide. Check local immigration and residence rules for North Cyprus directly with EMU instead of assuming mainland Turkey rules apply.
