Verulam Buildings Scholarships at University of Oxford | UK

Author: Syed Arbaz Ali Rizvi Published: October 28, 2026 Last verified: October 28, 2026 Sources: Oxford Faculty of Law, 3 Verulam Buildings
Verulam Buildings Scholarships at the University of Oxford are worth £15,000 for one year of the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), funded by the London chambers at 3 Verulam Buildings. There is no separate scholarship form at the start: you submit your BCL application by 12:00 midday UK time on Wednesday, January 27, 2027, then complete the means assessment form that arrives inside your offer letter.

The BCL is Oxford's masters level taught law course for graduates from common law backgrounds. It runs full-time for 10 months, and this scholarship can be held at any Oxford college. This guide explains who qualifies, what the award actually pays, the exact documents Oxford asks for, the deadline converted into Pakistani, Eastern, and Pacific time zones, and the small details that separate a complete file from one that never gets read.

Every fact below was checked on October 28, 2026 against the Faculty of Law scholarship page, the official BCL course page, the Faculty admissions FAQ, and the chambers website. Where a figure is our own arithmetic or a point is still unpublished, it is labeled so you can confirm it before you commit money to a plan.

Verulam Buildings Scholarships at the University of Oxford: £15,000 BCL award guide for 2027 entry
The 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship gives £15,000 toward one year of the Oxford BCL for 2027 entry.

Overview

The 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship is funded by 3 Verulam Buildings, a commercial barristers' chambers at Gray's Inn in London, and administered through the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. The chambers list it as its flagship Oxford award on its own website, alongside a Cambridge LLM scholarship. The Faculty awards it once a year to a candidate on the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), and the current official value is £15,000 for one year.

The BCL itself is a masters level course of about 10 months for graduates from common law backgrounds. Oxford is clear that its academic standard sits well above a first-class law degree such as an LLB, BA, or JD, and that only applicants with outstanding first-class law degrees are admitted. The Faculty's own admissions graphic shows roughly 551 applications for 90 places each year, so treat admission as the main hurdle and the scholarship as a second, narrower contest inside it.

Three details decide most applications: you must apply for the BCL by the January deadline, you must send a means assessment form to be considered for the money, and you must hold or be finishing a Qualifying Law Degree for the Bar of England and Wales if you want the award itself. Everything else in this guide supports those three points.

IMPORTANT DEADLINE

12:00 midday UK time on Wednesday, January 27, 2027 (5:00 PM PKT the same day, 7:00 AM ET the same day, 4:00 AM PT the same day). This is the final application deadline for 2027-28 entry, and the January deadline is the latest one that still counts for the majority of Oxford scholarships. Oxford advises submitting at least two weeks early, which means Wednesday, January 13, 2027, if you want that buffer.

Degree level the scholarship supports

The award supports one year of a master's-level postgraduate law program, specifically the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at Oxford. Despite the word Bachelor in the title, this is a graduate degree, not an undergraduate one. Oxford runs a separate course called the Magister Juris (MJur) for graduates from civil law backgrounds, and the two courses share most of their content, but this particular scholarship is listed for BCL candidates only. The scholarship duration on the official page is one year, and the course itself is scheduled as 10 months of full-time study in Oxford.

Subject areas you can study

There are no compulsory options on the BCL. Students choose either four full options, three full options and two half options, or two full options and four half options. The list of full options usually numbers around 35, with roughly 10 half options, and in place of one taught option you may write a dissertation of 10,000 to 12,500 words with Faculty approval.

Applicants usually ask whether their favorite field is covered, and the honest answer is that the option list rotates. The Faculty publishes a provisional list each year with a clear warning that not all options run every year. Areas that appear in the current list include:

  • Private law: Advanced Property and Trusts, Commercial Remedies, Civilian Foundations of Contract Law in previous cycles.
  • Commercial and corporate law: Corporate Finance Law, Corporate Insolvency Law, Commercial Negotiation and Mediation.
  • Public and constitutional law: Constitutional Theory, Comparative Constitutional Law, Constitutionalism in Asia, Advanced Administrative Law.
  • Criminal law: Advanced and Comparative Criminal Law.
  • International and comparative law: Conflict of Laws, Comparative and International Trust Law, Comparative Human Rights.
  • Regulation and new fields: AI and Data Law, Competition Law, Business Taxation in Global Economy, Intellectual Property and the Creative Industries.

Note: The scholarship page gives preference to candidates with an interest in private law, which in practice means contract, restitution, property, and trusts rather than criminal or public law. You do not need to prove that interest with a separate document, but it is worth naming in your statement of purpose if it is true.

Who Can Apply

Eligibility has two layers. First, you must be admitted to the BCL, because the scholarship only exists for admitted BCL candidates. Then you must satisfy the scholarship's own condition about a Qualifying Law Degree for the Bar of England and Wales. Meeting the first layer without the second still gets you into Oxford; it just does not put you in the running for this particular £15,000.

Academic requirements

As a minimum, applicants should hold or be predicted to achieve a first-class undergraduate degree with honours in law, or the equivalent of that qualification. Oxford states plainly that entrance is very competitive. For applicants with a degree from the United States, the minimum overall GPA normally required to meet the undergraduate level requirement is 3.7 out of 4.0. In the absence of an undergraduate law degree, candidates may occasionally be admitted with a postgraduate diploma or master's qualification in law at distinction level, though the Faculty describes that route as rare and generally only possible when the qualification was completed before applying.

If your transcript uses a CGPA or a division system instead of a class, convert it honestly and keep the official document beside your conversion. Our CGPA calculator is a quick way to see where your percentage sits before you write anything into the application form.

The professional bar-route condition

The official wording is specific: the scholarship goes to a BCL candidate holding or finishing a Qualifying Law Degree for the Bar of England and Wales. This condition is about the award, not about admission, and it is the single most misunderstood line on the page. A Qualifying Law Degree is a professional label used by the English and Welsh legal regulator, not a synonym for any law degree, and the regulators have changed how law degrees are recognised in recent years.

Check this before you plan your money. Ask the Faculty in writing whether your specific degree meets the Qualifying Law Degree condition for the scholarship, using the funding email on the official page. Do not assume a four-year LLB automatically counts, and do not assume it fails either. This is our top item requiring verification, and it changes strategy for applicants outside England and Wales.

Other conditions

  • Nationality: the official page lists no nationality restriction, so applicants of any country may be considered if they meet the academic and professional conditions.
  • College: the scholarship is open across all Oxford colleges, so your college choice does not narrow or widen your chances with this award.
  • Language: the BCL requires Oxford's higher level of English proficiency, covered in its own section below.
  • Entrance tests: no GRE or GMAT scores are sought for this course, and publications are not expected. A lack of publications will not be assessed negatively.
  • Financial assessment: your circumstances are reviewed through the means assessment form, which is why that form matters so much.

Note: Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee a place or the award. Treat every threshold as the floor of a competitive file, not as a target.

How Winners Are Selected

Selection happens in two separate decisions, and the scholarship attaches to the second one. First, a panel of Faculty assessors chaired by the Director of Graduate Studies for taught courses reads every complete BCL application. If that decision is in your favor, a college makes the second decision, normally through its law tutors working with the Tutor for Graduates. An offer from the Faculty means you will have a college place even if your first choice college passes on your file.

What the Faculty actually reads

The Faculty admissions FAQ lists the evidence used for decisions: academic transcripts, confidential academic recommendations, submitted examples of academic work, and your statement of study plans. For the BCL, that statement is a 300-word statement of purpose. The Faculty adds something most applicants miss: the personal statement generally plays a less important role in assessment than the references, written work, and academic qualifications, but it may provide information relevant to consideration for scholarships. In other words, your statement carries more weight for the money than for the admission.

The Faculty also states directly that whether or not you have secured funding will not be taken into consideration when your application is assessed. You will not be judged as needy or privileged at the reading stage, and applying for this scholarship carries no penalty.

What the means assessment adds

The scholarship page lists its application method as the means assessment form, with a note that the link will be included in your offer letter. That form is where financial circumstances enter the process. The Faculty does not publish a scoring method for it, so the practical rule is simple: send accurate, verifiable figures, because an inflated or inconsistent form is worse than a modest one.

  • Stage 1: eligibility screening and academic review of the complete file by the Faculty panel.
  • Stage 2: college decision, which confirms the place rather than re-ranking the scholarship.
  • Stage 3: means assessment, which decides the scholarship among candidates who already hold offers.

Important: Only one award is made each year on this page, and the official status for the current cycle shows as allocated. The published next year available is 2027/28, which is why this guide treats the January 27, 2027 deadline as the live one.

Funding and Benefits

This is a partial funding award, and it is worth being precise about what that means before you build a budget around it. The figure on the official page has not changed to the higher numbers you may see quoted elsewhere, and older third-party listings still show a lower historic value of £10,000. The current confirmed figure is £15,000.

Award

£15,000 cash value

The official value of the 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship, listed for the BCL with a one-year duration.

Duration

One year of funding

Matches the standard length of the BCL, which runs for 10 months of full-time study.

College

Any Oxford college

The award is not tied to a single college, so you can apply with the college you actually prefer.

Route

No separate form first

Consideration runs through your BCL application plus the means assessment form in your offer letter.

What the award does not cover: £15,000 will not cover the full overseas tuition fee for 2027-28, and it does not pay your living costs, your visa, or your immigration health surcharge. Treat it as a strong contribution rather than a full ride, then plan the gap honestly in the costs section below.

Required Documents

Oxford publishes the exact specification for the BCL application, and documents that miss the specification can make your application incomplete. Build the file set below in this order, then check each item against the course page again before you upload.

01

CV or résumé

Compulsory for this course. Most applicants submit one to two pages covering academic achievements and relevant professional experience.

02

Official transcript

Issued by your institution, showing detailed grades. Any transcript not in English needs a certified translation uploaded with the original language version.

03

Three references

Register three referees, with academic references strongly preferred. Assessment may start once two references are in by the deadline, but the third may still be required later.

04

Written work

One essay on a legal topic, maximum 2,000 words, in English. Academic work from your most recent qualification is preferred, and an extract is allowed with a short context note.

05

Statement of purpose

A maximum of 300 words covering your motivation, academic history, relevant experience, and the areas you want to specialize in.

06

English test scores

Optional at submission. You can apply without them and supply them later if the department makes you a conditional offer.

File rules matter as much as content. Uploads must be PDF, JPG, or PNG, each file under 4MB, and Word documents are not accepted. Oxford also asks that you show the word count on your statement and written work wherever possible, and warns that a document that misses the stipulated word count can leave the application unassessed. If a scan is too heavy, run it through our PDF compressor before uploading, and use the motivation letter word counter to keep the 300-word statement within its limit.

Note: Your application and all supporting documents must be complete by the deadline. Documents submitted after the deadline, or an incomplete file on the day, usually will not be assessed at that deadline at all.

English Language Requirements

The BCL requires Oxford's higher level of English proficiency, which is one step above the standard level most courses ask for. You may submit your application without test scores, but if the department makes you an offer, it can require scores by a specific date as a condition, and the test must have been taken no more than two years before the course start date.

Accepted test Minimum overall Minimum per component
IELTS Academic (institution code 0713) 7.5 7.0
TOEFL iBT including Home Edition (code 0490) 110 Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 25, Writing 24
Cambridge C1 Advanced 191 185
Cambridge C2 Proficiency 191 185
Oxford Test of English Advanced 165 155

Oxford does not accept IELTS General Training or IELTS Online, does not accept the One Skill Retake feature, and does not accept TOEFL Essentials or My Best Scores. All minimums must come from a single test rather than combined sittings. If you want to see how a practice score converts into these bands, our IELTS band score calculator gives you the arithmetic in a few seconds.

TOEFL warning for 2027 applicants: Oxford has suspended acceptance of TOEFL tests taken from January 21, 2026, while it reviews the revised test format, and the Faculty FAQ says it adheres stringently to the required scores with no admission below the level. If you are booking a test this cycle, IELTS Academic or a Cambridge qualification is the lower risk choice. Re-check the official English language page before you book, because this suspension can be lifted at any time.

Waivers and exemptions

You do not need to provide English evidence if your first language is English and you have always been a citizen of and primarily resident in a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration, or if you are a current Oxford student applying for readmission. Everyone else may request a waiver of the test score requirement when submitting the application, and Oxford publishes guidance on how those waiver requests are judged. A waiver is not automatic, so never plan your timeline as if it is.

Re-verification reminder

Check before you pay: Program-level English rules, test suspension notices, and waiver guidance all change between cycles. Open the official English language page in a second tab and re-read the current table in the week you submit, then again before you book any test you plan to rely on.

Costs You Should Budget For

Three numbers decide whether this award is enough for you: the tuition fee, your monthly living costs, and the one-off costs around the application and the visa. Oxford publishes the first two for each cycle, and the figures below are the ones available on the official pages at the time of writing.

Tuition

Fee status 2027-28 annual fee 2026-27 reference fee
Home students £34,850 £32,880
Overseas students £52,630 £49,660

The 2027-28 figures are the published course fees for this course, and the 2026-27 column comes from the official course information sheet so you can see the direction of travel. Against an overseas fee of £52,630, a £15,000 award covers roughly 28 percent of one year of tuition, which is our own calculation from the two published figures, not an official statement. The remaining balance plus your living costs is what you need to plan for.

Living costs

For the 2026-27 academic year, Oxford published a likely living cost range of £1,405 to £2,105 per month for a single full-time student with no dependants, covering accommodation, food, personal items, social activities, study costs, and other items. Multiplied across the 10 months of the BCL, that is roughly £14,050 to £21,050, which is our arithmetic on the published monthly range. Oxford advises budgeting for annual increases as well, and tells students to allow separately for visa and immigration health surcharge costs.

Application fee

The graduate application fee for taught courses is £75, payable in pounds sterling by credit or debit card as you submit, and it is not refundable if you withdraw. Research course applications cost £20, but the BCL is a taught course. Applicants resident in low-income countries, refugees and displaced persons, and certain UK applicants from low-income backgrounds may qualify for a fee waiver, and the form presents the waiver questions automatically if your country of residence is on the published list. Check that list before you pay, because £75 is easy to recover and hard to reclaim.

Practical target: With the award, a realistic overseas budget for one year is the £37,630 fee balance plus your living costs. That figure is our subtraction (£52,630 minus £15,000), not an official number, and it ignores any other funding you win. Build your plan around a range, not a single point.

Application Procedure

The flowchart below shows the full route from checking your eligibility to your first day in Oxford. Every step is drawn from the official course and scholarship pages, and the red step is the one you cannot recover from if you miss it.

Verulam Buildings Scholarships application flowchart Eight steps: check BCL eligibility, book an English test, gather documents, write the statement and essay, submit before the deadline of January 27, 2027, receive the offer letter, complete the means assessment form, and start the BCL on September 28, 2027. 1 Check BCL eligibility First-class law degree US GPA normally 3.7/4.0 2 Book your English test IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each component 3 Gather your documents Transcript, CV, three referees and written work 4 Write statement and essay 300-word personal statement one essay up to 2,000 words 5 Submit before the deadline 12:00 midday UK time on Wednesday, January 27, 2027 6 Receive your offer letter Faculty decision expected around the end of March 7 Complete the means form Link is sent inside your offer letter 8 Start your BCL September 28, 2027 at Oxford, 10 months long
1
Confirm eligibility and book the test early

Check your degree class against the first-class requirement, convert your grades if your transcript uses a CGPA, and book IELTS as soon as you decide to apply. Test centers fill up, and Oxford expects the score within two years of the course start.

2
Assemble the document set.

Request your official transcript, ask three referees (academic first), pick one legal essay of up to 2,000 words, and draft the 300-word statement. Convert everything to PDF under 4MB before you upload.

3
Submit through the official Apply button.

Start on the BCL course page, pay the £75 fee or request a waiver, and submit by January 13, 2027, if you want Oxford's recommended two-week buffer. Payment in GBP by credit or debit card is part of a valid submission.

4
Complete the means assessment form

The link arrives inside your offer letter. That form is the only route into the scholarship itself, so answer it carefully and return it by the date printed in your letter.

Deadlines and Time Zones

There is one official date for this route: the final BCL application deadline for 2027-28 entry. The scholarship has no closing date of its own, because consideration runs through that application plus the means assessment form. The timeline below puts the whole cycle in order, and the table converts the closing time into the zones our readers actually use.

Verulam Buildings Scholarship timeline for 2027 entry Six events: the application cycle opens in September 2026, the BCL deadline falls on January 27, 2027 at 12:00 midday UK time, the Faculty decision is expected around the end of March 2027, the college decision follows about six to eight weeks later, the means assessment form arrives with the offer letter, and the BCL begins on September 28, 2027.  September 2026 Application cycle opens. January 27, 2027: BCL deadline, 12:00 midday UK. End of March 2027 Faculty decision expected 6 to 8 weeks later College decision follows With your offer letter Means assessment form sent September 28, 2027 BCL course begins

Deadline in your time zone

The official time zone is the United Kingdom, and January 27 falls after both the UK and the US have left daylight saving time, so the UK is on GMT and the US zones are on standard time. That makes the conversion stable and easy to check twice.

Zone Date and time
United Kingdom (official) Wednesday, January 27, 2027 at 12:00 midday GMT
Pakistan (PKT, GMT+5) Wednesday, January 27, 2027 at 5:00 PM PKT
US Eastern (ET, GMT-5) Wednesday, January 27, 2027 at 7:00 AM ET
US Pacific (PT, GMT-8) Wednesday, January 27, 2027 at 4:00 AM PT
GMT reference Wednesday, January 27, 2027 at 12:00 PM GMT

Two habits prevent most missed deadlines. First, submit at least two weeks early, which puts your target at Wednesday, January 13, 2027, because Oxford recommends completing and submitting the application at least two weeks before a scholarship deadline. Second, log the date in our scholarship deadline tracker so it sits beside every other cycle you are running. Late applications are not accepted for a deadline, and payment problems on the final morning are common enough to plan around.

Two deadlines, one date. The January deadline is both the course deadline and the funding deadline for most Oxford scholarships. Applications submitted after it are ineligible for consideration for the majority of Oxford funding, and there is no later scholarship date waiting for you in spring.

Residence Permit or Visa

International students who need a visa follow a fixed order of operations. You cannot start a student visa application until the University has issued your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS number, which means the visa clock only starts after your offer is confirmed and its conditions are met. The BCL is full-time and requires attendance in Oxford, and full-time students are subject to the University's residency requirements, so a part-time or remote plan is not available on this route.

  • Offer and conditions: meet any academic or English conditions attached to your offer before the University issues the CAS.
  • Financial evidence: prepare the funds evidence your visa category requires, which is separate from any scholarship you win and is not replaced by the £15,000 award.
  • Health surcharge: budget for the immigration health surcharge alongside your visa fee, as Oxford's own cost guidance advises.
  • Timing: a Faculty decision around the end of March, plus a college decision roughly six to eight weeks later, normally leaves comfortable time before a September start, but only if your documents are ready.

Note: Visa rules, fees, and maintenance thresholds change often. Read the current Student visa guidance on GOV.UK in the week you apply, and treat anything you read in this guide about visa costs as general orientation rather than a fixed quote.

For Pakistani Applicants

Pakistani applicants are welcome, and the official scholarship page sets no nationality bar. What changes for you is the practical layer around the application: how your degree is graded, how you prove English, and what the deadline looks like in Pakistan Standard Time.

Degree and grade checks

Oxford asks for a first-class undergraduate degree in law or its equivalent, and an LLB from a Pakistani university is normally assessed against that standard through the University's international qualifications guidance. Work out where your result sits before you write anything into the form. A CGPA transcript, a division system, and a percentage system all convert differently, and an honest conversion done early prevents a weak answer later. Use our CGPA calculator for a quick check, then confirm the equivalent with an official evaluation rather than a blog estimate.

English proof

Most Pakistani applicants need to submit a test score. The exemption applies only if your first language is English and you have always been a citizen of and primarily resident in a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration, which does not describe the typical applicant from Pakistan. Plan for IELTS Academic at 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each component, book it early, and remember that PTE is not on Oxford's accepted test list for this course. A waiver request is possible at submission, but treat it as a possibility rather than a plan.

Documents and money

  • Transcripts in Urdu or a regional language: upload a certified English translation together with the original language version, because a translation without the original will be removed from your application.
  • Application fee: check whether your country of residence appears on Oxford's low-income country list for fee waivers before you pay the £75.
  • Time zone: the deadline is 5:00 PM PKT on Wednesday, January 27, 2027, which is a workable afternoon hour, so there is no excuse for a late-night rush.
  • Means assessment form: prepare income documentation before your offer arrives, because the form will ask for figures you should not have to hunt for under time pressure.

Tip: Aim to submit by January 13, 2027. Two weeks of buffer absorbs reference delays, transcript requests, and the slow mornings that payment gateways sometimes produce.

For US Applicants

Applicants inside the United States start from a different position, because the BCL treats a US law background as a common law background and publishes an explicit grade threshold for US degrees.

Grades and degree type

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum overall GPA normally required to meet the undergraduate level requirement is 3.7 out of 4.0. That figure is the floor, not the average of admitted candidates, and the Faculty describes entrance as very competitive. A JD, a BA in law, or another first law degree from an accredited US institution all sit within the common law background the course is designed for. No GRE or GMAT score is sought, and your LSAT is not part of this application.

English requirement

Most US applicants do not need an English test. The exemption covers you if your first language is English and you have always been a citizen of and primarily resident in a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration, and the United States qualifies for that category. If you already hold an IELTS or Cambridge score at the higher level taken within two years of the course start, you can include it anyway, because Oxford says test scores already in hand should be submitted with the application.

Cost, payment, and timing

  • Fee currency: the £75 application fee must be paid in British pounds sterling by credit or debit card at submission, so expect your bank to convert it at the day's rate.
  • Deadline: 7:00 AM ET on Wednesday, January 27, 2027, which is early but entirely manageable if you submit the day before.
  • Overseas fee status: US applicants normally pay the overseas rate of £52,630 for 2027-28, which is the figure that makes the £15,000 award meaningful but partial.
  • Referees: academic references are strongly preferred, so give former professors notice well before January rather than asking in the second week of the month.

Note: A US applicant who plans to return to practice in the United States should still read the scholarship's Qualifying Law Degree condition carefully, because that condition is about the English and Welsh Bar route rather than about US admission to practice.

For Other International Applicants

Applicants from every other country work from the same official base, with three adjustments that decide whether your file reads as complete or confusing.

Qualification equivalence

If your degree is not from the United Kingdom, Oxford recommends reading its international qualifications guidance to see what grades would usually meet the minimum entry requirement. A first-class degree, a distinction, or the local equivalent of both is the target, and the guidance exists precisely so you do not have to guess. Where your institution issues a grade point average instead of a class, convert it once, consistently, and keep the conversion out of the narrative part of your statement.

Language and translation

  • Take one accepted test at the higher level, in a single sitting, within two years of September 28, 2027.
  • Do not rely on TOEFL while the suspension on tests taken from January 21, 2026 is in force, and check the official page before booking.
  • Provide certified translations for any transcript not issued in English, and upload the original language version beside it.
  • Documents you wrote yourself, such as your written work and statement, must be in English written by you rather than translated by a third party.

Universal rules that do not change by country

The means assessment form applies to every international candidate, the January deadline applies to every country, and the award value stays at £15,000 wherever you live. Your time zone changes, your equivalence question changes, and your evidence pack changes, but the route itself does not. The conversion table above covers Pakistan, US Eastern, and US Pacific; add your own offset from GMT if you sit elsewhere, and remember that the official reference point is 12:00 GMT on January 27, 2027.

Important: The official scholarship page lists no nationality restriction, but it does list a professional condition about a Qualifying Law Degree for the Bar of England and Wales. Confirm in writing with the Faculty whether your degree meets that condition, because the answer changes your chances more than your nationality does.

After You Receive an Offer

Winning a place is a sequence of small administrative tasks, and each one has a clock attached. Read the offer conditions the day it arrives, because conditions carry their own deadlines and Oxford's general policy is that deferrals are not permitted except in exceptional circumstances approved by both the Faculty and your college.

Complete the means assessment form

The link to the means assessment form is included in your offer letter, and returning it by the date stated in that letter is what keeps you in the scholarship process. This step is easy to miss because it arrives after the adrenaline of the offer has faded. Answer with figures you can document, and keep the source documents in the same folder as the form so a later query is easy to answer.

Accept the place and prepare the .visa

  • Accept formally through the applicant portal by the deadline in your offer, and confirm your college membership.
  • Clear your conditions, including English scores if the offer is conditional, before the date your letter specifies.
  • Plan fee payment: course fees are payable no later than Week 1 of the term in which you start, or seven days after your actual start date if that is later, and colleges may set their own arrangements.
  • Request your CAS once conditions are met, then build your visa file around it.
  • Book accommodation early, since the application form lets you indicate interest in college accommodation but the paperwork usually follows the offer.

Note: Keep copies of every offer letter, form, and confirmation email. You will need them for the visa, for fee queries, and for the scholarship office if a figure ever needs checking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting on the final morning: Oxford recommends finishing at least two weeks early, and payment, upload, and reference failures on January 27 have no recovery path.
  • Missing a word count: a statement over 300 words or written work over 2,000 words can leave the application incomplete and unassessed.
  • Uploading Word files: only PDF, JPG, and PNG are accepted, and files must stay under 4MB unless you follow the larger upload instructions.
  • Translating without the original: a certified translation of a transcript must be uploaded together with the original language document.
  • Stopping at two references: assessment may begin with two references by the deadline, but the third referee may still be required, so register all three from the start.
  • Booking TOEFL on autopilot: tests taken from January 21, 2026 are not currently accepted while Oxford reviews the new format.
  • Ignoring the means form: the scholarship is decided on the BCL application plus that form, so an offer without the form means no award.
  • Name mismatches: keep your name spelled identically across passport, transcript, CV, and references, because merged documents are checked as one file.
  • Generic statement text: a statement that could be sent to any university wastes the one place where scholarship-relevant information can be added.

Scholarship Scam Warning Signs

This particular award attracts impersonation, and the donor has published a warning about it. Recognizing the pattern is faster than investigating every message you receive.

  • Impersonated domains: 3 Verulam Buildings has warned publicly that a site at 3vb.org was used by people claiming to represent the chambers and its barristers, even offering fake legal and asset recovery services. Verify any chambers contact only through the domain the chambers publishes itself.
  • Guaranteed selection: no committee guarantees a place on a course with roughly 551 applications for 90 places, and no one can pre-sell you a £15,000 award.
  • Payment for the scholarship: the only official payment in this process is the £75 Oxford application fee, and it goes to the University, not to a donor, agent, or intermediary.
  • Phishing for the means form: the means assessment form link arrives inside your offer letter. A cold email or message asking you to complete a financial form on a lookalike page is a warning sign.
  • Free email senders: official Faculty communication about funding comes from Oxford addresses such as the funding mailbox on the scholarship page, not from a personal webmail account.
  • Urgency and secrecy: pressure to act today, to pay by transfer, or to keep the offer confidential are all standard scam behaviors.

How to Apply Safely

Apply only through the official Apply button on the BCL course page, and reach that page by typing the University address yourself or by using the link in the official links section of this guide. The application fee is paid inside that form in GBP, and Oxford accepts Visa, Visa Debit, and Mastercard.

Safe route in four checks: Start from the official course page. Pay only the published fee inside the official form. Open the means assessment form only from inside your offer letter. Verify any message claiming to represent 3 Verulam Buildings against the chambers' own website before you reply.

Protect the rest of your file the same way. Never share your applicant portal password, never upload a document through a link sent by an unknown account, and never send passport scans or bank details to an agent who promises admission. For questions about funding, the scholarship page gives a dedicated Faculty mailbox, and the admissions FAQ directs application progress questions to the Faculty by email rather than by phone. If a message feels wrong, forward it to the official contact and wait for a reply from an Oxford address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Verulam Buildings Scholarship worth?

The 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship is worth £15,000 for one year of study. It is funded by the London chambers 3 Verulam Buildings and is awarded once a year to a BCL candidate at the University of Oxford.

Chambers: Who can apply for the 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship?

Any BCL candidate can be considered, and the official page lists no nationality restriction. The award targets candidates who hold or are finishing a Qualifying Law Degree for the Bar of England and Wales, with preference for those interested in private law.

Is there a separate application for this scholarship?

No separate scholarship form is needed at the start. Successful BCL candidates are considered on their BCL application and the means assessment form, and the link to that form is included in your offer letter.

What is the deadline for the Oxford BCL for 2027-28 entry?

The final deadline for 2027-28 entry is 12:00 midday UK time on Wednesday, January 27, 2027, which is 5:00 PM in Pakistan and 7:00 AM in the US Eastern time zone on the same day.

Can Pakistani students apply for this scholarship?

Yes. The official page sets no nationality limit, so Pakistani applicants who meet the academic and language requirements can be considered. Most Pakistani applicants will need to prove their English level with an accepted test, because the exemption applies only to citizens and residents of majority English-speaking countries.

What English score does the BCL require?

The BCL requires Oxford's higher level: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each component, or TOEFL iBT 110 with Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 25 and Writing 24. Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency at 191 overall with 185 per component, and the Oxford Test of English Advanced at 165 with 155 per component, are also accepted. Oxford is not accepting TOEFL tests taken from January 21, 2026 while it reviews the revised test.

Does the scholarship cover the full tuition fee?

No. The award is £15,000, while the published BCL fee for 2027-28 is £34,850 for Home students and £52,630 for Overseas students, so you should budget for the difference plus your living costs.

When will I hear back about my application?

For the BCL, you can expect to hear from the Faculty around the end of March, and college decisions may take about six to eight weeks more. The Faculty states that whether you have secured funding is not considered when your application is assessed.

How is the BCL application assessed?

Admissions decisions rest on academic transcripts, confidential academic recommendations, examples of academic work and your 300-word statement of purpose. A panel of Faculty assessors reviews applications first, and a college then makes the second decision.

Is this scholarship available for 2027-28 entry?

Yes. The official scholarship page shows the current cycle as allocated and lists 2027/28 as the next year available, so candidates applying for 2027-28 entry can be considered.

Final Words

Three actions decide whether you are in this contest at all. Confirm your degree and your Qualifying Law Degree question with the Faculty before you commit to a budget. Submit a complete file by January 13, 2027 rather than January 27, with every document inside its word count and every file in the right format. Then complete the means assessment form the moment your offer letter arrives, because that form is the switch that turns an admission into a scholarship bid.

The award is real, the value is £15,000, and the route is public and free of agents. What it asks for in return is precision.
