The Boston University Presidential Scholarship 2027 is a merit-based award worth half of tuition each year, renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. BU considers first-year applicants from the United States and from around the world, including Pakistan. You do not fill out a separate scholarship form. You apply for admission, and you must do so by December 1, 2026.
BU’s own wording matters here, so I stay close to it. The scholarship goes to incoming first-year students whose academic records are exceptional and who also lead in their schools and communities. It covers part of tuition only, so housing, food, fees, and the rest of your budget still need a plan.
This guide is written for readers in the United States and around the world. Pakistani applicants get a dedicated section, because the time difference and the paperwork look different from Pakistan than from Boston. US applicants and students from other countries get their own sections as well. I also correct a common mistake: many websites still repeat an older figure of $25,000.
Boston University Presidential Scholarship 2027: half tuition for first-year applicants, with a December 1, 2026 deadline.

Boston University Presidential Scholarship Overview
Boston University’s Board of Admissions awards the Presidential Scholarship to incoming first-year students who show exceptional academic achievement. BU adds that recipients also stand out beyond the classroom and lead in their schools and communities. The award is for bachelor’s study on BU’s campus in Boston, Massachusetts.
It helps to think of this as a merit discount on tuition, not a full scholarship. Nobody applies for it separately, yet it is still competitive, because the Board of Admissions makes the decision and BU’s pages do not say how many awards it gives each year.
What changed for 2027 applicants
BU’s first-year merit page now lists the annual value as half tuition, effective for students entering in Fall 2026. Older articles describe a flat $25,000 per year, and a few call it full tuition. If a website gives you a dollar figure without pointing to BU, treat that figure as out of date until you confirm it on BU’s own page.
December 1, 2026. BU lists this date for Presidential Scholarship consideration. Its pages do not state a time zone or a cutoff hour, so read the Deadlines and Time Zones section before you plan your submission.
On October 25, 2026, I read these Boston University pages: the first-year merit page, the Presidential Scholarship page, the international applicants page, the secondary school credentials page, the deadlines page, the Early Decision page, the cost of attendance page, the majors page, the additional merit scholarships page, and two Financial Assistance pages on international students and scholarship renewal. I then compared them with third-party summaries to see where older numbers still circulate.
This is a research-based guide, not an account of my own application. Study Abroad with Arbaz is not affiliated with Boston University.
Who Can Apply for the Presidential Scholarship
This section covers eligibility only, meaning who is allowed to be considered. How BU chooses among eligible applicants is a separate question, and the next section answers it.
Basic eligibility
- You are applying as an incoming first-year student for bachelor’s study at BU.
- You are a US citizen, a permanent resident, or an international student. BU lists all three groups as eligible.
- You complete your application for admission by December 1, 2026. BU calls this the only requirement for consideration.
BU defines an international student as someone who is not a US citizen and not a US permanent resident (green card holder). Most international students need an F-1 student visa or a J-1 exchange visitor visa to study in the United States.
Eligible countries
BU does not publish a country list for this scholarship, and I found no nationality restriction on any page I read. Applicants from Pakistan and from every other country therefore fall under the international group.
Subjects and majors
BU’s scholarship pages do not limit the award to certain majors. BU offers more than 300 programs of study, and its majors page confirms fields such as these:
- Business (Questrom School of Business)
- Engineering (College of Engineering)
- Computer science and data science
- Economics, mathematics, and statistics
- Biology, chemistry, physics, and other natural sciences
- Psychology, political science, and international relations
- Communication, journalism, film, and media (College of Communication)
- Education (Wheelock College) and health sciences (Sargent College)
- Music, theater, and visual arts (College of Fine Arts)
Three practical notes apply. Engineering applicants need a year of calculus, and Questrom applicants need a year of calculus or a year of precalculus plus a year of AP Statistics, according to BU’s international page. The School of Hospitality Administration does not accept first-year applications. If you apply to the College of Fine Arts, BU lists separate College of Fine Arts scholarships with a January 4 deadline, so read the CFA instructions as well.
Note: Meeting the eligibility rules lets you be considered. It does not guarantee an award, and BU decides every case.
How Winners Are Selected
BU’s Board of Admissions decides who receives the award. Because there is no separate scholarship application, your admission file is also your scholarship file.
What BU says it rewards
- Strong grades and academic performance
- Talent, initiative, and creativity
- Impact in your school or community
- Leadership beyond the classroom
These points come from BU’s merit scholarship page, and I have kept to them on purpose. Inventing scoring rules would not help you.
What BU does not publish
On the pages I read, BU does not give a minimum GPA, SAT or ACT score, class rank, number of awards, or success rate for this scholarship. Some websites list a top 5% class rank or an SAT score of 1500 as requirements. I could not find those figures on BU’s current Presidential Scholarship pages, so I treat them as unverified.
How I would strengthen an application
These four ideas are my own suggestions, not BU rules.
Finish early
A file completed weeks before December 1 leaves time to fix missing items without risking the date.
Show impact, not only grades
BU highlights leadership and community impact, so describe what changed because of your work.
Keep English scores consistent
BU reviews each section score, so retake early if one section lags far behind the others.
Choose test scores on purpose
BU is test optional, and you cannot change your choice after you submit, so decide carefully.
Funding and Benefits
The Presidential Scholarship is partial funding. It reduces tuition, and it does not turn a BU education into a fully funded one.
Funding at a glance
Half tuition
Applied each year, according to BU’s current first-year merit page.
Up to four years
Renewable for up to eight fall and spring semesters when renewal criteria are met.
No extra forms
BU says no additional essays or application forms are required.
Living costs
BU’s pages describe tuition only. Housing, food, and fees are not mentioned.
How renewal works
BU says merit awards renew automatically for up to eight fall and spring semesters, provided the recipient meets the renewal criteria. According to BU’s renewal page, most merit awards require the following:
- A minimum GPA of 2.00
- At least 12 credits completed satisfactorily each semester
- Good disciplinary standing
- Any other conditions in BU’s Guide to Your Merit Award
The same page lists extra rules for several other awards, such as living in BU housing for full-tuition awards. The Presidential Scholarship is not on that list, but your award letter has the final word.
Need-based aid for international students
BU’s Financial Assistance office states that international students are not eligible for federal financial aid, and that it is unable to offer need-based scholarship or grant aid to them, except through select partner organizations. Most lenders that offer credit-based loans to international students ask for a US citizen or eligible non-citizen co-borrower, although a few do not. Details are on BU’s international students financial aid page.
Important: BU’s Financial Assistance office also states that it does not pay visa fees, summer or winter housing costs, or any tax liability for international students who receive a BU scholarship. Add these items to your own budget.
Required Documents
The scholarship uses the standard BU application, so BU’s international applicant checklist is the list that matters. The cards below summarize it, and the official page has the full detail.
Core documents on BU’s international checklist
Secondary school records
Official copies sent by a school official. Documents in another language need a notarized English translation, and BU wants both the original and the translation.
Senior year grades
Counselors send first-semester or first-trimester grades. Students in exam-based systems such as IB, GCE, CBSE, or ISC also need predicted results.
Counselor recommendation
The School Report and Counselor Recommendation forms on the Common App. If your school has no counselor, a school official can submit them.
Teacher evaluation
One teacher completes the Teacher Evaluation form on the Common App.
English proficiency
TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or Duolingo English Test if English is not your first language, unless BU grants a waiver.
Financial documentation
Required for F-1 and J-1 students. BU recommends sending it with your application.
Passport data page
A copy of the photo page of a current, valid passport. BU requires PDF format.
Note: Mid-year grades normally arrive after December 1. BU’s pages do not say exactly which credentials must have arrived by that date, so I would send everything you control before December 1 and ask BU about anything that depends on your school’s calendar.
Financial documents: rules that trip people up
BU asks you to complete its Confidential Statement for Financing Studies & Sponsorship Support Confirmation and to attach proof of available funds, such as a signed bank letter. Every source of support must meet four conditions:
- It is current, meaning dated within 12 months of your start date at BU.
- It is written in English.
- It is readily available or liquid. BU does not accept stocks or non-liquid investments.
- The name on the bank account matches the name of the sponsor who signs the form.
BU’s example for students enrolling in Fall 2026 was documents dated between September 2, 2025 and September 2, 2026. I would expect the same logic to apply to Fall 2027 entry, but confirm the exact window with BU before you request your bank letter.
Optional items
- Interviews: BU recommends an optional InitialView or Vericant interview as extra evidence of English ability. A test score is still required.
- SAT or ACT scores: BU is test optional for first-year applicants through fall 2028 and spring 2029, and that includes scholarship programs. If you submit scores, you may self-report them, but BU requires official reports before you enroll, and a mismatch can lead to your enrollment being rescinded.
English Language Requirements
If your first language is not English, BU requires one of three tests, even though SAT and ACT scores are optional. The table shows what BU publishes for each.
| Test or rule | What BU publishes |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | Most competitive applicants have a composite score of 90 to 100 and at least 20 in each section. For score reports issued from January 21, 2026, BU lists a total score of 5.0 or higher for the most competitive range. BU’s TOEFL code is 3087, and both in-person and Home Edition tests are accepted. |
| IELTS Academic | An overall score of 7 or higher satisfies BU’s English requirement for all programs. Results must come directly from the testing service. |
| Duolingo English Test | Most competitive applicants have a total score of at least 125 to 135. BU requires the total score and every subscore. |
| Not accepted | IELTS Indicator, TOEFL ITP Plus, TOEFL Essentials, and IELTS One Skill Retake. |
| Waiver | BU decides at its discretion. The waiver request form must reach BU by the application deadline and accompany a complete application. |
| Optional interview | InitialView or Vericant interviews are recommended as extra evidence, but a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo result is still required. |
BU says it reviews each section score for consistency, so one weak subscore can matter even when your total looks fine. If you are still practicing, the IELTS band score calculator on this site helps you check your overall band from your section scores.
Early Decision applicants have an earlier English test deadline: November 15 for Early Decision and the end of December for Early Decision 2. BU lists no separate English test date for Regular Decision on the page I read. Because the scholarship asks for your application and credentials by December 1, I would aim to have your English scores sent before that date.
Costs After the Scholarship
BU publishes its costs by academic year. The latest figures I could verify are for 2026-27, so I use them as a guide and not as a promise for 2027-28. All amounts are in US dollars.
| Item (2026-27) | Amount in USD |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $73,024 |
| Housing (depends on accommodation type) | $13,170 |
| Food (most dining plans) | $7,570 |
| Fees | $1,570 |
| Total estimated billed expenses | $95,334 |
| Other expenses (books, personal, local transportation) | $3,085 |
| Total cost of attendance | $98,419 |
Source: BU’s cost of attendance page. BU notes that tuition and fees can change by action of its Board of Trustees.
What half tuition means in dollars
The table below is my own arithmetic from BU’s 2026-27 figures. It is an estimate, not a quote from BU, and it will change when BU publishes 2027-28 tuition.
| My estimate (2026-27 figures) | Amount in USD |
|---|---|
| Half of tuition ($73,024 divided by 2) | $36,512 |
| Total cost of attendance | $98,419 |
| Remaining after half tuition | about $61,907 |
That remaining amount is before health insurance, flights, and visa-related costs. It also assumes you receive the award, which BU does not guarantee.
Costs the award does not cover
- Housing and food: BU’s scholarship pages describe tuition only.
- Health insurance: Massachusetts law requires students enrolled in at least 75% of the full-time curriculum to have medical insurance. Students without qualifying coverage must buy BU’s student health insurance plan, which BU bills with first-semester charges.
- Visa and travel: BU does not pay visa fees. Flights and the federal SEVIS fee are also your responsibility.
I do not convert these amounts into other currencies, because exchange rates move every day. Check the current rate on the day you plan your budget.
Application Procedure
The flowchart shows the full route from reading the rules to tracking your decision. The numbered steps below it repeat the same route in text, with the detail you need at each stage.
Read BU’s first-year merit page, its Presidential Scholarship page, and the international applicants page. I treat those pages, not summaries, as the final word.
Ask your school to send official transcripts. BU also wants copies of all qualifying exams you have taken, such as IGCSE final certificates, so start collecting them early.
Choose TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or the Duolingo English Test, and have the testing service send results to BU. If you believe you qualify for a waiver, prepare the request so it reaches BU by the deadline.
Ask your counselor for the School Report and Counselor Recommendation, and ask one teacher for the Teacher Evaluation. Both go through the Common App, and other people control their timing, so ask early.
Complete BU’s Confidential Statement for Financing Studies & Sponsorship Support Confirmation, obtain a signed bank letter, and scan your passport data page as a PDF.
Select Boston University, finish your essay and activities list, and decide whether you want SAT or ACT scores considered. For essay structure, see our guide on writing a winning motivation letter.
Submit your complete application. There is no separate scholarship form to file, which means a missed December 1 date cannot be fixed with a later scholarship step.
Check the Application Status page in the MyBU Applicant Portal for received and missing items, and clear any missing item quickly.
Deadlines and Time Zones
The timeline shows the six dates that matter most around the scholarship deadline. BU’s deadlines page lists months and days without years, so I have added the years that match the Fall 2027 entry cycle.
Three deadlines, three meanings
Do not mix these dates up. December 1, 2026 is the scholarship consideration date. January 5, 2027 is the Regular Decision admission deadline, and it falls after the scholarship date. May 1, 2027 is the enrollment deposit date for Regular Decision admits. BU’s stated requirement for the scholarship is a complete application by December 1, and I found no exception for later applicants.
| Date | Event | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| November 2, 2026 | Early Decision application deadline | Early Decision is binding. BU says applicants who apply before December 1 learn about merit scholarships when Early Decision decisions are released. |
| By November 15, 2026 | Early Decision English test deadline | International Early Decision applicants must take TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo by this date. |
| December 1, 2026 | Presidential Scholarship deadline | Complete your application and supporting credentials by this date. |
| December 14, 2026 | Early Decision notification | BU releases Early Decision admission decisions. |
| January 5, 2027 | Regular Decision and Early Decision 2 deadline | This is an admission deadline only. It is later than the scholarship deadline. |
| February 8, 2027 | Early Decision 2 notification | BU releases Early Decision 2 decisions. |
| May 1, 2027 | Regular Decision enrollment deposit | Admitted Regular Decision students confirm their place by this date. |
Time zone conversion
BU does not state a time zone or a cutoff hour for December 1. I have assumed 11:59 PM Eastern Time in Boston as the latest plausible cutoff. That is my assumption, not BU’s statement. On December 1 Boston is on Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5), because daylight saving time ended on November 1, 2026.
| Time zone | Assumed latest cutoff | My safer personal target |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Time (ET), Boston | 11:59 PM, Tuesday, December 1, 2026 | 11:59 PM, Monday, November 30, 2026 |
| Pacific Time (PT) | 8:59 PM, Tuesday, December 1, 2026 | 8:59 PM, Monday, November 30, 2026 |
| Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) | 4:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 | 4:59 AM, Tuesday, December 1, 2026 |
| Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) | 9:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 | 9:59 AM, Tuesday, December 1, 2026 |
Notice that PKT is ten hours ahead of Boston in December, so the deadline can arrive a calendar day earlier or later than you expect. Submitting a full day ahead of the assumed cutoff protects you from time zone mistakes and portal slowdowns. You can also add the date to the Application Deadline Tracker on this site.
Student Visa and Entry to the United States
BU states that international students usually need an F-1 student visa or a J-1 exchange visitor visa. The scholarship does not replace any visa step. The sequence below follows the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement student process steps.
- Get admitted to BU. Once a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program accepts you, it issues your Form I-20.
- Check your Form I-20 against your passport. Your name and date of birth must match exactly.
- Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee at FMJfee.com, and keep the receipt. The SEVIS ID on the receipt must match the one on your I-20.
- Apply for your student visa at a US embassy or consulate, and bring your I-20 and the required documents.
- Enter the United States no more than 30 days before your program start date, and report to your school by that date.
Wait times and rules change, so check the current appointment wait times on the US Department of State website and the instructions from the embassy or consulate you will use. Visa processing also differs by nationality, and some nationalities face extra restrictions. Confirm yours before you pay any fee.
A scholarship and an I-20 do not guarantee a visa. Consular officers make that decision, and no scholarship provider, agent, or website can promise it.
For Pakistani Applicants
Pakistani applicants are international applicants under BU’s definition. Most of the rules above apply unchanged, but a few points need extra attention from Pakistan.
Your school credentials
BU’s secondary school credentials page lists the Higher Secondary School Certificate for Pakistan. BU also asks for copies of all qualifying exams taken during secondary school, and it gives IGCSE final certificates as an example. If you study O Levels and A Levels, note that BU’s list for the United Kingdom names two years of GCE A-Level study. If your curriculum is unclear, contact BU’s international admissions office at 617-353-4492 or intadmis@bu.edu before you submit.
Paperwork you may not need
On the BU pages I read, I did not see IBCC equivalence or HEC attestation listed as a requirement for first-year admission. Ask BU before you pay for either. If any document is in Urdu or another language, BU requires the original plus a notarized English translation.
Time difference and your target
PKT is ten hours ahead of Boston in December. My suggested personal target is 9:59 AM PKT on Tuesday, December 1, 2026, which equals 11:59 PM Eastern Time on Monday, November 30. You can use the CGPA calculator to check how your grades look on a common scale, although BU reads your original records, not a converted number.
Proof of funds from Pakistan
BU’s funding rules are strict. The bank letter must be in English, dated within 12 months of your start date, and issued for liquid funds, and the account holder’s name must match the sponsor who signs BU’s form. Land or property papers are not liquid funds, so ask BU before you rely on them.
After half tuition, my estimate leaves about $61,907 per year for a 2026-27 entrant, before travel and insurance. Plan that gap with your family early, because the funding proof is part of your application, not an afterthought.
Visa step in Pakistan
You apply for the F-1 visa at a US embassy or consulate that serves Pakistan, after you receive your I-20 and pay the SEVIS fee. Book through the official US visa appointment system. BU’s requirements and the federal steps do not require an agent, so be careful with anyone who says otherwise.
For US Applicants
US citizens and permanent residents can be considered for the Presidential Scholarship too, and they use the same December 1 deadline. What differs is the separate world of need-based aid, which only US citizens and permanent residents can use.
The scholarship and need-based aid are separate
The Presidential Scholarship needs no financial aid forms. Need-based aid is a different process with its own forms and dates. BU’s deadlines page lists the CSS Profile and FAFSA due on November 2 for Early Decision and on January 5 for Early Decision 2 and Regular Decision. To import those forms, BU requires a Social Security Number on the CSS Profile, the FAFSA, and the Common Application.
The BU Promise
BU says it will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, without loans, for first-time first-year students who are US citizens or permanent residents. For students starting in 2026-27, BU states that families with household income below $200,000 and typical assets can expect to pay no more than $20,000 per academic year, and families at $75,000 or less can expect to pay nothing. Confirm on BU’s cost of attendance page that the same terms apply to Fall 2027.
Practical tips for US applicants
- BU is test optional, and its SAT code is 3087 and its ACT code is 1794 if you choose to send scores.
- BU superscores both tests, using your highest section scores regardless of test date.
- For a wider view of US options, read our guide to scholarships for undergraduate students in the USA.
For Other International Applicants
If you live outside both the United States and Pakistan, your biggest tasks are matching your national curriculum to BU’s list and converting the deadline to your own clock. The points below apply to every other country.
Match your curriculum to BU’s list
BU’s credentials page lists accepted school certificates for dozens of countries. If your country is not listed, BU asks you to contact its admissions office. Students in exam-based systems such as IB, GCE, CBSE, or ISC must also provide predicted results with their senior year grades.
Your local deadline
The table converts my assumed cutoff of 11:59 PM Eastern Time on December 1, 2026 into several other time zones. Remember that this cutoff is my assumption, and aim to submit a day earlier.
| Time zone | Assumed latest cutoff |
|---|---|
| Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) | 5:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| Nairobi (EAT, UTC+3) | 7:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| Dubai (GST, UTC+4) | 8:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| New Delhi (IST, UTC+5:30) | 10:29 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| Dhaka (BST, UTC+6) | 10:59 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| Manila (PHT, UTC+8) | 12:59 PM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
| Sydney (AEDT, UTC+11) | 3:59 PM, Wednesday, December 2, 2026 |
English and funding questions
If English is your first language but you speak another language at home, BU says you may choose to send English test results to show fluency. If you want a waiver, request it by the application deadline with a complete application. For funding, remember that BU does not offer need-based aid to international students, so confirm your family’s ability to cover the remaining costs before you apply.
After You Receive an Offer
An admission offer is the start of a second set of tasks. The steps below keep your scholarship and your visa plan on track.
- Read your award letter and note the renewal conditions. BU’s guide asks recipients to report any other scholarship they receive to BU Financial Assistance in writing.
- Meet the deposit date. For Regular Decision, BU lists May 1, and Early Decision dates are earlier.
- Follow the steps on BU’s admitted international students page.
- Request your I-20, pay the SEVIS fee, and book your visa appointment, as described in the visa section above.
- Plan health insurance, because Massachusetts law requires coverage.
- Keep copies of every document you sent. BU notes that you will need them for your visa, for US Customs and Border Protection at entry, and for any later transfer.
Common Mistakes
These mistakes appear again and again in scholarship applications. Each one is easy to avoid if you know about it early.
- Trusting the old $25,000 figure: BU now lists half tuition. Check BU’s page, not a summary.
- Applying on January 5: That is the Regular Decision admission deadline, and it is later than the December 1 scholarship deadline.
- Treating test optional as English optional: Test optional covers the SAT and ACT only.
- Sending an unaccepted English test: BU does not accept the IELTS Indicator, TOEFL ITP Plus, TOEFL Essentials, or IELTS One Skill Retake.
- Using out-of-date financial documents: Bank documents must be dated within 12 months of your start date and match the sponsor’s name.
- Skipping earlier exam certificates: BU wants copies of all qualifying exams, such as IGCSE certificates.
- Assuming the award covers housing: BU describes it as half tuition only.
Scholarship Scam Warning Signs
Popular scholarships attract fake offers. Watch for these signs.
- A guaranteed award: BU’s Board of Admissions decides, and nobody else can promise the result.
- A fee for “selection” or a “scholarship form”: BU says no additional forms are required.
- Pressure to pay quickly: Scams often use false urgency to stop you from checking.
- Unofficial contact details: Official BU messages come from bu.edu addresses, not free email accounts or chat apps.
How to Apply Safely
Use only BU’s own pages and the official Common Application. Type the web address yourself or follow the links in the Official Links section below, and be cautious with lookalike domains.
Tip: If a question is not answered on BU’s pages, contact BU’s international admissions office at 617-353-4492 or intadmis@bu.edu. Keep every reply in writing so you can show it later if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Boston University Presidential Scholarship open to international students?
Yes. Boston University’s first-year merit scholarship page lists international students, along with US citizens and permanent residents, as eligible to apply. BU does not publish a nationality list for this scholarship, and I found no country restriction, so Pakistani applicants fall under the international group.
How much is the Boston University Presidential Scholarship worth?
BU lists the annual value as half tuition, effective for students entering in Fall 2026. Older websites still quote a flat $25,000 or full tuition. Half of BU’s published 2026-27 tuition of $73,024 is $36,512, but I did not find 2027-28 tuition on the pages I reviewed, so treat that figure as an estimate.
What is the deadline for the Boston University Presidential Scholarship 2027?
The scholarship deadline is December 1, 2026. BU does not state a time zone or cutoff time on its pages. If you treat 11:59 PM Eastern Time as the latest possible cutoff, that is 9:59 AM on December 2 in Pakistan (PKT), but I recommend submitting a full day earlier.
Do I need a separate application or essay for the scholarship?
No. BU states that no additional essays or application forms are required. You are considered when you submit your application for admission and supporting credentials by the December 1 deadline.
What GPA or SAT score do I need for the Presidential Scholarship?
BU does not publish a minimum GPA, SAT score, ACT score, or class rank for this scholarship on the pages I reviewed. Some websites list a top 5% rank or an SAT score of 1500, but I could not confirm those figures on BU’s current pages. BU says it looks for exceptional academic achievement plus leadership in school and community.
Do I need TOEFL or IELTS if the application is test optional?
Test optional applies to the SAT and ACT. If your first language is not English, BU requires TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or the Duolingo English Test. BU may waive the English requirement at its discretion, but the waiver request must reach BU by the application deadline with a complete application.
Does the scholarship cover housing, food, or visa fees?
BU describes the award as half tuition. Its pages do not mention housing, food, or fees, and BU’s Financial Assistance office states that it does not pay visa fees, summer or winter housing costs, or tax liability for international students who receive a BU scholarship.
Can the Presidential Scholarship be renewed?
Yes. BU says the scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, and its Financial Assistance office says merit awards renew automatically for up to eight fall and spring semesters when recipients meet the renewal criteria. Most awards require a 2.00 GPA, at least 12 credits each semester, and good disciplinary standing, so confirm the exact terms in your award letter.
Can international students get need-based financial aid at Boston University?
No. BU states that international students are not eligible for federal financial aid, and its Financial Assistance office is unable to offer need-based scholarship or grant aid to them, except through select partner organizations. Merit scholarships such as the Presidential Scholarship are the route BU points international applicants to.
Can US citizens and permanent residents apply for the Presidential Scholarship too?
Yes. BU lists US citizens and permanent residents alongside international students as eligible, and all of them use the same December 1 deadline. Need-based aid is a separate process with its own forms and deadlines.
Final Words
Three actions matter most. Confirm every detail on BU’s official pages, because older numbers are still everywhere. Finish a complete application, including English proof and financial documents, before December 1, 2026.
